Hi everybody.
I've been a longtime (on-and-off) follower of 40K since I was a teenager. I'm now 32.
On-and-off I've collected 40K miniatures and read the fluff but I've never really played a full game. I really enjoy the painting/modelling side of the hobby. The last time I rolled dice in anger was about 14 years ago and the last time I painted was about 4 years ago.
Recently I have found myself looking to take up a new hobby. I dug out a (largely) unpainted Dark Angels army, picked up the 6th Ed rule book and Dark Angels codex and started painting. My only concern is that I am either going to struggle to play games (none of my friends are interested) or that if I do play other 30-something-year-olds I'll just be dreadful since I've never really played before (despite knowing a lot about the game, e.g. listening to the 11th company podcast religiously, etc).
What do people think? Am I weird/daft to think about taking the game up for the first time at my age?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Your never too old in my opinion and you join a local gaming club to get games or go to your local gw and most of the time they will have events for beginners to play each other

Nope - you're not too old. You have been told
(I'm 33, almost all of my opponants have been similar ages - apart from my 10yr old nemesis.)
Whereabouts are you in the UK?
If you're within an hour or so of the midlands, I'm happy to do some pickup games

I played my first 5th edition game at 33. Prior to that I'd played in 3rd edition (at the beginning) and hadn't really touched it since.
If you want to play, play. Don't let your age change your attitude.

No you're not too old. I recently turned 30 and although I've been collecting and reading 40k for years I haven't played a game since 2nd edition.

Go for it. I regularly play against a 40something father and his 12 year old son. Can't beat him to save my life. I find I would rather play against an older player than a younger one: more likely that they will win or lose graciously.

I'd never played a game in my life until about 5 years ago, when I was 27. I now have more models than I know what to do with and have enjoyed five years of a fun and creative hobby; you're never too old to start!
P.S. Also in the midlands...

I am 32 years old and I play the game. I don't see why you shouldn't be able to. I returned to playing the game about a year and a half ago after a long break.

I'd add to not be afraid to play a game with older/younger players as well. I'm 29 and I have not been a regular player since I started in 2 years ago, but I've played many enjoyable games with players 10 years my junior. There are polite and respectable people at both ends of the age spectrum that will not judge you based on your age or grasp of the rules.Of course if you find out your opponents aren't respectful, I'd suggest avoiding them after that...

I recently moved about 200 miles, found a new game shop (that is pretty awesome) and decided to get back into the game. I wander in with my army in cardboard boxes, and the guy who helped me get back in the swing of things must be +40 judging by his hair and appearance. He is one of the friendlier people at the shop. I am almost 30, and there are a few mid 30s people who come in from time to time.
So no, I don't think you are too old, this isn't a children's game in the way many people might think it is at first glance.

Wow - what a great response!
Looks like I'm decided then. I'll finish up painting these minis up to 1000 points and then head on over to the local GW store I guess.
Suspect I'll get tabled but hopefully it'll be fun!

I've been playing since i was a kid, with a couple of breaks.
I'm 35 now. Still playin'
My wife started when she was 28, because i talked her into it, and she likes it. More the collecting/painting than the playing though.
My daughter is 8, and has been playing for 2 years...
You are at that sweet spot where you can actually afford to buy models (unless you were rich as a kid).
Welcome back to 40K, and enjoy it. It's changed a bit, but not that much

You may actually do better.
I keep having rule flashbacks from prior editions that mess me up to no end.
Four of us play 40k and we are in our mid 40's yet are all responsible and not considered freaks by our peers.
What makes us all "special" is we all have models that are sometimes older than our opponents.
We also have a tendency to talk about the "good old days of GW".
Taking up the game now in your "old age" will make you less prejudiced about the rules and I think you would play better.
Around this time most people have kids and you have something cool to show your kids.
Learning anything new is worthwhile, it freaks the ladies out when they find out I know how to paint well and can make pretty much anything (small).
Tactics and strategic thinking in general keeps the mind in good shape.
Just was reading about a guy who makes sculpts and paints custom cake toppers for people.
You do not stop gaming because you are old.
You grow old because you stop gaming.
Good Luck
