Hello, first post!

So, as the title implies, I'm starting into 40k with a slow-grow program my local game store is running the rules are this:

Buy a battalion box of your choice, assemble and paint it by Jan 1.
Buy an additional $50+ worth of models for your army, assemble and paint by Feb 1.
Buy, assemble and paint another $50+ worth of models by Mar 1.
Present the fully painted army at the store in March, and get a free army bag.
There will also be a tournament with the new armies sometime in March.

So, that being said, I've already purchased the Dark Angels ravenwing battalion box, and the codex is on the way.

My question to the experts is this:
Give the above constraints, what would you recommend I pick up next? Should I try to stay with Ravenwing exclusively, or mix in some Deathwing and tactical squads?

Are you planning Ravenwing or mix wing?

If ravenwing you need Sammael to make bikes troops.

You will want a ravenwing command squad (or land raider with command squad) to carry a banner of devastation. Then you will need another ~30 bikers with a dab of melta guns thrown into the army here and there.

I was planning on mixed. Painting 30 bikers seems...tedious.

Do you want IG allies at all? If you do there is a great list with Azzy and scoring ravenwing and deathwing.

I would get a ravenwing command squad either way as they are great models and can be brutal if used right (always command squad and now black night squad as the command squad is the same stuff with more options for cheaper).

If you want mix wing the you should probably buy a dark vengeance box and sell off/trade the chaos marines stuff. That gives you a libby, 5 termies, 3 bikers, and a TAC squad. Great deal.

You will have to decide real soon if you want ravenwing, deathwing, or both as troops as you need special character HQs to unlock them. If you want tactical squads then you should just use a libby for your HQ.

I'd advise getting at least a few Deathwing; dropping Terminators in with the Ravenwing teleport homers is a big part of the Dark Angels army book.

Agree with this.

Get Azrael to make RW & DW troop options. Use your bikes to drop a mix of Deathwing into your opponents face. We can mix weapons up so a 5 man squad of DW can have 1x heavy weapon, 2x (or more) SS / TH and some dakka.

Some Deathwing Knights are something to look at in the final stage... Nasty when they form their side-by-side shield wall.
