So I've decided to start an Ogre army using the Kingdoms of Man army list, and I'm hoping for some C&C on my list, and general new player advice. My group have decided to work our way up to ~2500pt armies, capitalising on Mantic's reasonably priced army bundle. My main opponent is rolling Undead, so I think I'll have some tough battles ahead. To make matters worse I'm fairly clueless to the tactical subtleties of KoW, having not played any games yet. That being said here's my list so far, in the neighbourhood of 2k points:
Troops
4 x Ogre Warrior Regiment (6) - 760
4 x Ogre Shooters, Xbows (3) - 560
2 x Knights (10) - 350
Characters
2 x Ogre Captain - 250
2 x Wizard - 120
Grand Total: 2040
My strategy is simple enough, Ogre warriors to hold the line, shooters on the flanks, cavalry to intercept flanks/oppurtunistically flank. The idea is basically Hulk-Smash the enemy. To make 2500 I'll be adding 1-2 units Mounted Sergeants (or scouts?) for hunting war engines etc., maybe 1-2 trebuchet's (or rocket artillery?) and/or a few missile troops for cannon fodder/skirmish screen, and if points allow 1-2 mounted ASB's or another wizard.
Reading the army books two things worry me: huge tarpitty hordes of resilient Undead, and De 6+ wraiths and the like dark-surging my flanks & rear. What are some good counters for Undead armies, and Dark Surge shenanigans? Should I be taking some cheap regiments/troops of humans for speed bumps? More fast things? More zap/breath attack to cancel regeneration? War engines? Also are Ogre blunderbusses any good at all? It seems like having reload on a weapon with 12" range kinda sucks, but more breath attacks might be handy...
Anyways thanks for reading this, any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've been wanting to get into a fantasy game for a while now and can't wait to get some games in...
PS: I registered on Mantic's forum several weeks ago, but never received an activation e-mail. Has anyone else had the same problem?

Actually, you'll likely want to take a look at the kings and legends supplement. It has a full ogre army available, and the shooters in that book are better. You get ogre wizards which are a bit more durable, an ogre special character, ogre Berzerkers with a crapton of attacks, braver (haha) goblins, and the all important blaster: think mangler Squig or snotling pump wagon-dishes out 2D6 crushing (4) hits. And it's cheap points wise. Using the Kingdoms of Men rulebook hampers you a bit, but it is doable.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Ogres are a great choice to start out with simply because it's a low model count army, really quick to paint and get on the table.
Breath attacks are pretty nice, no modifiers to hit so they can still do some damage while mobile.
Definitely get some since they're a good answer for killing things that you don't have LoS to at the start of your turn, or have a better charge range than you, or both (such as those pesky wraiths).
Activation for the mantic forums is done manually by the mods so your account should have been activated by now... if not let me know the username you signed up with and I'll poke a mod on there to sort it out.

I had the same problem with the forums too. I messaged a mod and it got fixed within a few days. I think they should either automate it or try do do a daily sweep of the forum applicants so people are not waiting weeks.

And here's the link.
Shooters look really good, but the Red Goblin Blaster looks like something that could really spoil the day for a Revenant cavalry unit. (Mind you - the Blaster is treated as Routed when it explodes, so the enemy gets points for it. But it also deals 2D6 with a piercing 4... not too many units are going to walk away from that, even Hordes.)
The Auld Grump
*EDIT* It is also worth noting that the Red Goblins in the Ogre army are not utterly spineless. So you have units to fill in any points left over.

Awesome, thanks for the input everyone! I think I'll still go with the KoM list, both for it's greater flexibility and it being better suited to my army's theme (all human units will be "counts-as").

Pretty sure Squig made some useful datasets for Battlescribe that are useful for creating your KOW force. They worked great for me.

Looks like you didn't click on the link in your activation email - they often seem to get eaten by spam filters.
