So about £40-ish. Yeah, that isn't bad. As someone who doesn't play regularly/at all these days I think I'll pass, but the value is certainly there for a newcomer to the game. At a guess, that and a crew box for each side would probably get you a full (if a little inflexible) force.

What I'm hoping is that it makes demos easier. My circle has been very reticent at stepping outside the 40K/fantasy comfort zone. If I can show up with a few minis, a bunch of terrain and show them the ropes... that might be a good place to start.

Hmmn, never really liked the character art on the fate decks-- feels recycled and not very theme-y... which I guess is why I still use my ratty 1st gen deck.
Also, since when is it 4/7 for the band? End of beta it was all 7 IIRC...

Cards look pretty good and nice they have explanations on them
The starter set looks a like a good thing - not keen on many of the models but like that they are mercs

For a starter set that's aimed at bringing in new people - including those new to wargaming entirely, this sort of model complexity in the starter would be pretty disastrous. While the Black Blood Scion is on the super basic side, the rest seem good for 3-4 part plastic models. They seem about on par with their first wave 1 starters like Lilith and Pandora. It's just that since those, the models have gotten a lot more dynamic and thus, far more complex to build. Automatically Appended Next Post: Shifting Loyalties cover. That's fine, but I'm still not overly impressed with them. But surely it's just as offputting having a nice easy to build starter, and then the next kit they buy being really complex, than having a complex first kit? Or almost as bad anyway; if they think the rest of the models will be like the starter ones to build and then they're suddenly a lot more difficult is that not going to put some people off still? Maybe not, and there definitely needs to be the balance between accessibility and looking awesome in a starter, I guess I was just expecting more of the looking awesome without worrying about the accessibility.

Truth. Whilst someone who is a newbie in the sense of being a wargamer but not a Malifaux player could handle it, if they want the broadest possible appeal they don't "true" newbies trying to stick tiny bits of piping on Joss, for example. AlI can say is that once upon a time I had grey carpet and thank feth it's a wooden floor now.

I actually very much love the complexity of Malifaux models. Occasionally, like Misaki's crew or Ironsides's crew, it becomes problematic when there are no instructions.

It's not like this is uncommon. A good example is GWs starters. Push fit models in repeated poses, while the majority of their models are multipose with lots of variability in posing.
The simple starter models are to get you into the game. Slap them together and start flipping cards. Once you're into it, the complexity ramps up.

Me too (to an extent, some models are just ridiculous). But, again, you were obviously experienced when you started building them. Give someone utterly new to the hobby a So'mer box and it'll probably go in the bin before they ever flip a card.

I get your point, I think I just got myself excited for some really amazing sculpts to draw players in that way and didn't think about the logistics of a new player building some of the trickier models.

Oh I get that, and I think they could have done better. Dark Vengeance really showed what can be done with push fit models - the Chaos Chosen were incredible. It looks like they might not have even wanted 2 part bodies, probably going to be single part body, legs and feet, with separate arms and head. But, they'd had so many problems in the past with their guys in China doing absurd cutting of models, they might have been a bit gunshy on making these more complex. The Scion of Black Blood is pretty average. No two ways about it. Boring pose, not much going on. The Orderlies, Bloodwreches and Nurse I think will paint up a treat. I really do like the Doc and Angel Eyes, who I think is the standout and would stand nicely alongeside anything currently in the Nephlim set.

I hear you. I have been on a very, very tight budget all year when it comes to minis. And no one will play Malifaux with me, but during GenCon, I am going to splurge on their website for sure. Even if I have to wait a few weeks to get everything.

It's funny, I cut my teeth with Malifaux Gremlins (I still don't have a fishing rod Bayou made) so some of the others have been less of a problem so far.
Well it's off to ebay to sell a laptop, my Magic the Gathering stuff and what I have left of Fantasy to fund the Gencon Sale at the end of the month. I really hope the performer is still available in some form. After getting completely taken apart by Collette I want to have a go with her that crew.

Plastcraft are doing Bayou terrain now. it's also from their pre-coloured range. I've been holding off buying the current Malifauc stuff in the hope they push it to pre-coloured, so I'll make do with this while I want for the other terrain.

Yeah, from that, I'd say the train station buildings, walkways and shack on the walkway will be PVC buildings. The tracks and some of the clutter peices probably resin. Some of the clutter might come with one of the smaller buildings, there's a barricade that looks thin, like PVC sheet.
Cost, no clue. The coloured sets are more pricey than the normal sets.

I've become a recent convert to Plastcraft. I prefer it a lot over MDF. My Infinity terrain is mostly MDF, but I grabbed a bunch of Plastcrafts Bourak buildings and they went together really well. A lot better to work with, and superglue gives a very solid join, unlike PVA with MDF. Mostly I just hate painting terrain. So I'll grab this Bayou terrain, and wait to see if the regular Malifaux terrain goes into the Coloured range before I grab some.

I'd hold off on buying a performer until you see if she's available at Gencon. For the last couple of sales, the plastic LE's that were only available as an exclusive for ordering a certain dollar amount were available for individual purchase.
