I play both Arcanists and 10T, so I got excited when I heard about this. I don't understand the point of this Tortoise and Hare encounter. They have factions, but they can be taken by any faction, but only if the scenario allows for it? Avatars were at least cooler, in a way; at least they're centerpieces to a collection.

With the Hodgepodge Emissary, Tortoise, and Hare, I'm happy to see Wyrd exploring more design space regarding attaching specific upgrades over the course of the game. "Effects" that last until the end of the game with conditional triggers (Hare damage enemy or Tortoise defend well) are great design space.

Then again, it's better for Malifaux if they don't force people to buy the entire boxed set of Crossroads 20 or the Starter Set if they want to just use one model from it.

Those creepy-chubby-fairies are awesome!

Both the models will come with cards for standard Malifaux Proxy models, if I heard correctly.

The Tortoise is a counts as Izamu. I can't remember what the Hare is.

Regarding them having a faction but are useable by any crew - it's a narrative scenario. If they don't make it open, it limits who will buy them. With this logic, no one but Neverborn should be allowed to control the Carver as it is a Neverborn model and specifically a Nightmare.

Personally, im really tied of wyrd releasing models that you can only use in a specific mission. They are always really cool models and cards, but I have no reason to buy/paint them.

The carver, would love to use it, but cant
Male Rasputina guy in the crossroads book, again could make a model for him with male upgrade kit but cant use him
Now this.

After 3 models you're tired of it? Malifaux is a narrative driven game. These sorts of things are what drew me to it. personally I want to see more. But yes, releasing them with alternate cards so there's an official way to use them outside their scenarios would be good. If love an alternate card for the Carver.

...they come with THREE scenarios you can play AND a through the breach scenario.

That's 4 potentially unique games. I fail to see the rip off here? They're kick ass models that I will be buying and playing the scenarios and at worst will be playing as proxies for my Dreamer crew when I summon stuff.

I think the point of contention for some is the scenarios are not in the scheme and strategy deck, so are unlikely to be played in pick up games. I personally think that's a pretty narrow way of playing Malifaux - the game thrives in its narrative scenarios they give out in Chronicles and what you get with the special sets. Bring printed out scenarios and ask people to play them, you'll have a blast.

It's a definite "paint in sections" model.

-Loki- thanks for getting that up, forgot to do it after getting home from Malifaux Monday. Brutal Emissary looks sweet, will need a reworked sword though.

* Participating in events will get you poker chips called "Guilders". You can redeem them for goodies. More information soon.

* Next B&M store special will be a special-edition red plastic Coryphee

Spoiler:

In the far future:

* There will be another starter box with different factions.

* Avatars will eventually be getting fancy bases, but won't be remade in plastic.

In addtion:

* There are special-edition alternate cards for masters being printed. They're foil and given to "Wyrd Henchmen", the people that demo and promote the game. They'll also be available as supplementary prizes for tournaments as part of the tournament packs. Possible mention of them being available via "guilders" (see above) sometime.

I'm hoping for more pictures of what they've got to show off at their booth tomorrow. If I recall correctly, GAMA last year was our first sighting of the alt Kearis and Francisco, plus there were previews of regular stuff we didn't get until GenCon.

We've known for a while Avatar models were gone and we were getting special bases. Basically there's too many masters now to do plastic master specific avatars.

Interesting that they're talking about replacing the starter set so soon. I hope they move those plastics into a story encounter rather than individual boxes, because they're perfectly suited for it. Either that, or they could do a series of starter sets. Have the same rulebook, scenarios, fate decks, etc. Just come up with a set of 4 starter models per faction and make a series of starter boxes.

That huge monster looks very similar to a Nothingbeast.

I wonder who the 'bad guys' are? I assumed they'd have been Neverborn.

The Nothing Beast is a manifestation of the Tyrant named "Obliteration". We can maybe assume that the Tyrants are finally making their move on Earth as Zoradia kept prophesizing?

Neverborn just want humans to get out of the city of Malifaux and their world altogether. They don't really have too much of an interest in Earth, supposedly. Plus, many of the Tyrants have actually not been aligned with the Neverborn. Plague, The Witness, Shezuul, and Obliteration influence the Outcasts (Hamelin, Jack Daw, Viks, Tara respectively). The Dragon influences the Ten Thunders. Gorgon influences Ressers. Cherufe and December have been somewhat pacified by the Guild and Arcanists respectively. Only Nytemare works with the Neverborn, and that's just through a human vessel. Meanwhile Nekima, Lilith, Pandora and the other Neverborn higher-ups take no influence from the Tyrants. Meanwhile, the Outcasts as a whole are heavily influenced by them.

Leviticus, save us.

They might not be final poses, and just concept maquettes or something.

If you read or listen through the encounter between Pandora and Nightmare, pay attention to Nightmare's responses. If Nightmare is a tyrant, the thing in Pandora's box is quite likely one too. Or neither of them are tyrants as such, but something comparable.

To be fair, they specifically label Nytmare as a Tyrant on his stat card, and his background blurb names him 'the Tyrant known as Nytmare'.

I've always been curious about Pandoras Box though. Possibly Despair? That doesn't mean Pandora is a Tyrant, she's just wielding one as a weapon.

Easter Sale.

Crap. I was holding strong against Guild, but an alternate Witchling Handler?

Still hoping that in the coloured plastics they sneak in, alternate Barbaros and Nightmare Coryphee make an appearance.

So much of the Easter Sale list is stuff that hasn't even been previewed yet. So that's going to make a bit more of the Easter surprise.

But I think if I were making a $200 order during the sale, I'd break it into two for two handlers instead of a handler and yet another of the alternate wastrel.

The Warden and the Guild Hound both have the Guardsman label. So you can't take a label in the game for meaning that something is something else.

As for Pandora, not even the Neverborn know exactly what's going on.

Yeah, they don't even have box art for the Tortoise and Hare.

There's some griping about there being no Emmisarys, but I don't think they would have been ready before Gencon.

Fair enough about labels.

But again, his blurb specifically names him as the Tyrant known as Nytmare. It's hard to argue that he's not a Tyrant when his background blurb says he's the Tyrant Nytmare.

 solkan wrote:

Again, fair enough. There's plenty of weird stuff in the Neverborn faction that aren't actually indigenous inhabitants of Malifaux, like Collidi and Zoraida.

I'm really looking forward to the Tortoise and the Hare. Great looking figs that are very much in line with the company's artistic vision. They had to be fun to make.
