I need some suggestions on kitbashing a Necron Overlord. I am a new Necron player and would like to have a model that is uniquely my own. I would like to avoid buying the finecast model but i will probably be buying the Command Barge so i can use that overlord. Any idea's would be greatly appreciated.

The best place to look would probably be the lychguard/praetorian box, as those bits are the more ornate ones in the range (and you have a tonne of spares from building one squad or the other). Everything else is really too bland, so the one from the CCB+ lychguard bits would be the best option.

I think if you're trying to make the model your own, one thing to focus on would be the posing. Depending on how much effort you're willing to put in, Necrons are almost infinitely re-posable, as the joints are easily accessible and can even be reversed without looking too odd. This does take a lot of skill and patience (and I'd seriously suggest trying it on a few spare warrior bits before committing to the OL build), but can give some very unique and dynamic results.

If you're going for the Lychguard kitbash, I'd have to disagree with the above idea that they're very posable. In fact it's quite the opposite, you're stuck with the 5 poses given on the box, which have to be put together pretty precisely otherwise it won't fit correctly.

Out of the box the Lychguard are very limited, I agree, but if you are willing to chop each part at the knee/ankle/wrist/elbow and re-assemble the model limb by limb then you can do far more with the posing. As I said, that's a lot of work, but the best way to get more dynamic poses out of Cron bits.

I suggest using the Overlord that comes out of the CCB/AB box.

Basically you get a great model with a vehicle, ha ha. You can use that model and convert it further, I did for my Necrons. He's excellent for a base model to work with:

So many possibilities, a perfect starting point.

You can have the staff being held in a different direction.

Have a look at the Lycheguard legs if you don't want him in a standing pose.

If you look at my gallery, you can see that particular Overlord's arm with the staff is poseable in any direction. The forward orientation I agree is terrible.

Here's mine:

Here's a picture of the Lycheguard legs with that particular lord "cape" bit. The two guys in the background just use the regular standing lord legs.
Spoiler:

The bottom picture is a lord pointing with the staff, to angle it a bit there is a small snib on the ball joint that should be cut off. At least I think there is a small snib on the shoulder ball joint. Also the lycheguard kit comes with a variety of loin cloth type pieces that can be used to replicate the look of the lord that comes with the CCB.

You can use the arms from any Necron kit to reposition the staff how you want. You can also cobble together an entirely new staff from extra Immortal/Praetorian bits.

What was used:
Necron Warrior
Necron Destroyer
Necron Deathmark
Doomsday/Ghost Ark Pilot
Green Stuff

And the scythe blade is from LEGOS

Anyway, it just takes a little imagination and voila!

This guy is a Metal Necron lord from which I carved the res orb out of his hand and folded his fingers so he now gives the opponent the bird.
cut off the staff of light out of the other hand
then looked around my bits of Chaos Space Marines and Voila!

My barge overlord with Lychguard arms (and Scythe):

I think he looks a lot better than the basic barge OL. Too bad any of the Lychguard legs didn't really fit with the cape thingy so his legs look a bit static, but I'm quite pleased. Nothing too fancy but not too plain either. If you're into greenstuffing and/or cutting up limbs by the joints you have a lot more possibilities with the pose.

There are tons of options from the lychguard....they are only limited when you try to use the staves which are held in two hands - I made a lot of cryptek conversions from those guys...lots of great bits!

I have also seen some people do a few neat things starting with some of the robed fantasy figures (I think the chaos sorcerer) and putting some necron arms and a head in there.

best of luck!
