But but what about all those people in areas that don't have enough money to buy cameras like these for their police depts? Aren't they just totally disenfranchised!!!

We spend a hell of a lot more on all kinds of stuff that gives a very marginal improvement in policing. We currently require all officers to go through high speed vehicle training, despite vehicle pursuit being undertaken only in extreme situations, and then only by a very few officers. Millions spent on something drivers are expressly told they will never be allowed to do. But cameras? For some reason then the police union worries about cost
And to answer you next point, yeah, some districts that can't afford cameras will have poorer results. But the same is true when poorer districts have less policemen overall, because they just can't afford more. The answer isn't to insist that every district employ as few officers as the poorest district, to ensure everyone is protected equally poorly.

Funding not withstanding, I think all cops should be forced to wear them at all times. Lots less asshattery and abuse because they're being watched? Sounds good to me.

If the armed forces had them i am sure the police wouldalready have an order placed for every pfficer to have 3. Im somewhat surprised that they dont have mbt's and f35s on order so they can protend to be soldiers

Heh cheers. IMO it's a good idea for any citizen to record their interactions with the police, since most phones can do it now easily.
Which is illegal in some areas of the US.

Hmmm, perhaps I am wrong. I was under the impression that people were arrested for video taping police in New York City. However, upon further review they may have been arrested, but that doesn;t mean they were charged/prosecuted. It depends if you are deemed to be "interfering with an investigation" whatever that means.

Those cases have generally been thrown out by the courts. Unless you're interfering with an investigation, it is NOT illegal.

You are moving the goalposts. Someone said it was illegal in some areas of the US, you said "NAME ONE"; caps yours. Well, I can, and did, name two - Illinois and Massachusetts. Now saying that "they sometimes drop those charges after sufficient public outrage"... well, we're having a new argument, see?
Besides, they don't always. So even with the extended, new argument, it doesn't hold. The Illinois law, which prohibits videotaping police under any circumstance, still remains in effect - it looked like the defendant would prevail but he died of lung cancer before a ruling could be made.

Well, let me rephrase. In real states its not illegal.

Not really. It's when you're clearly focusing on what the officer is doing in the course of executing their duties.
Part of this likely originated from concerns over "scouting", where tactical teams were reporting that they were being filmed in the process of executing search warrants and the like. It was not an incredibly common circumstance but IIRC, in the mid to late 1990s Miami and parts of Texas had instances where tactical teams came to the conclusion they were being fed information about supposed cartel storehouses in order for the cartels to film and get an idea of what to be on the lookout for.

As someone going into law enforcement I would personally like to see the camera issued to me. It protects me from false claims made by anyone whom I come into contact with. It would also help to keep my fellow officers on the straight and narrow.

How do you think that would be received by other officers. I'd love to hear the viewpoints of new officers vs veteran ones too.

I feel that a lot of officers would welcome it. Law enforcement has revived a bad rap in the view of the public, this is most due to a few bad cops that when they do bad things, end up on national news. If the press did the opposite of what the do and only ran stories about good cops, the public view would be different. That said, there are bad cops, and they do get away with doing bad things. The cameras would be embraced by the officers due to the protection if offers the officer. I personally know several officers whom have been falsely accused of things and had to endure a intense review to clear their names. It will cause some issues, it is a system that officers must be trained on, and most importantly, remember to turn on and off at the correct times. There is also the issue of the media using the videos against the officers. I'm sure we all know of at least on time the media has used some 60 second clip to show and officer "abusing" a person when that wasn't the full story. The one that comes to mind for me was a video of a officer tazering a girl whom has in the back of his car. The video was taken out of context and looked VERY bad. However when fully watched the video shows the girl had clawed and bitten the officer. After he placed her in the rear of the car she proceeded to attempt to kick out the windows. The officer asked her to stop and when she did not, he tazered her. This is my one personal fear with the camera, that the video will be edited to make me look bad when I have done nothing wrong.
