In a DA army I prefer them due to the deathwing assault rule where you get the twin linked shooting on the turn of deep strike

They're abysmal, frankly. Overcosted, lose you points by the bucketload, evaporate when AP2 glances at them, suck at shooting, and suck in melee against the vast majority of CC units.

Maybe back when you could field two heavy weapons in a 5 man Squad, but now they're just trying too hard to be an all-round unit and in the attempt just fail at everything and accomplish nothing.

assault terminators are much better but even then I think there are better place to spend your points as SM.

I actually like them more than the Assault ones.
They get a heavy weapon and get to fire before assaulting.

If you footslog them, they will both die.
But the Tac ones will get to shoot first.

If you're driving them in LR, they will both survive to assault.

Both have their uses and since they hit the same (unless you take LC's which kind of negates the main point of takin them), but the durability of assaulty ones is a big point.

I once had this idea of using the Space Wolf codex to make terminators with guns good, because I could give them a Stormbolter and a 3+ invuln. But, 48 points a model is just too much. It could have been fun with with Logan along to make them troops, but there is just too much out there to hose them now.

I like standard Terminators and run a full 10 man squad to put two heavy weapons in it. I also run a Terminator Captain and even a Terminator Libby with them to give them a Melee presence. I then Combat Squad them and DS them in. I have been lucky so far because I have been facing stuff like Black Templars with 5 man las/plas squads with the bolter guys facing my front lines. I have been able to drop in behind them and kill the expensive stuff and then be able to charge and Power Fist them to death. If they charge me first, I get overwatch and then PFist whatever is left over.

Something I have been thinking of doing is going with two characters in Terminator armor with Storm Shields+Melee weapon with each combat Squad to soak shots. But I am not sure if that beats out just having the bolter guys rolling their invuln saves at a 5+ and soaking the damage with the character in the middle and Sergeant and/or heavy weapon in the back (unless it is a heavy flamer, you need that in the front).

Any of the heavy weapons are good, and I try to put one Chain Fist in each group (so two in a 10 man squad), normally on a heavy weapon (unless it is the flamer guy).

I feel that for an Assault Terminator Squad to be used effectively, you have to buy a Land Raider. Depending on the LR, that limits who you put with them which takes away options. This overall makes the Assault Terminator Squad more expensive and keeps it small. I have seen TH+SS Terminators overwhelmed buy a bigger unit that just got more attacks in due to size and them rolling 1s. You throw enough dice at something, it will probably die.

I like them, and probably do prefer them. Although it's a close call. I generally field them as a 5 man squad, assault cannon and one chainfist. They make good troubleshooters. Keep them in reserves, deep strike where needed.

Yes, there is a lot of AP2 stuff out there, and more seems to get added every day. Assault terminators are tougher, but it's harder to get them into combat to work. Tactical terminators suffer from being jack of all trades. There is always something that does there job better for cheeper. But they are not bad at a lot of things. And while AP 2 is more common, it's not everywhere. So sometimes you can just teleport in, laugh at small arms, and crush something.
