So last night I introduced my little sister to 40K, 550 points, imperial guard, deathmatch game... on a three by 2.5 foot table...

turn one: my command squad gets flattened by grenade launcher and mortar fire, then her chimera opens up on my anti-vehicle squad, killing half of them in one round of shooting - they hold their ground

Turn two: I manage to destroy chimera, along with a half dozen gaurdsmen, my shotgun vets charge - and she rolls over-watch and gets ALL SIXES!!!

Turn three: My unconditional surrender

Now she wants her own army and access to my bits box...

anyone got any stories like this?

I help people learn to play at my FLGS a lot.
But best storie I have is a Tau vs Salamanders game. He challenges my terminator Sargent with a Fire Warrior Shas'ui I accept his feeble challenge and miss all my attacks and 1 reroll. He hits me once, wounds me and I roll a 1 on my save. I gladly removed the Sgt head off the model and gave it to him. Now his fire warrior promoted to crisis suit commander still carries the head modeled onto the mini.

That is awesome - Mr. firewarrior earned that promotion...

I was teaching a guy a game, and was talking about different weapons and how some are better at different roles.

Him - "but, I could roll a six, so that should work"
Me - "yeah, but you can't count on that, unless you have large number of them, to work it out".
Him - Rolls to hit, gets a 6 for armor pen, then rolls a 6 again for explodes. "see, you only need one shot".
Me - "oh boy.."

That is a great story.

I know a person at my FLGS that actually introduces people to 40k playing a themed list. People give him grief about how his army lists are not WAAC or TAAC but the people that play him love the fluff and get excited about seeing different fluffy armies on the table.

I played a kid - he'd been bought a second hand army with some weird conversions, like a pred with duel heavy flamer sponsons.

He went to use psychic shriek and I was being kind so I let him roll my pyschic test. Little fether rolled 17 on 3 dice.
ALL my hammernators went away

I was messing about with logan wing - that was a third of my 2k army

Its because ordinance is still a word.
However, firing ordinance at someone isn't nearly as threatening as firing ordnance at someone.
Ordinance is a local law, or bill, or other form of legislation.
Ordnance is high caliber explosives.
No 'I' in ordnance.
Don't drown the enemy in legislation, drown them in explosives.

You are never let another roll for tests or use your dice. It is bad JuJu.

I was teaching my friend's kid brother how to play Fantasy, you know, letting him help move models and roll the occasional dice. Charming little tyke. He was fascinated by the Magic phase so I let him roll my mage's magic test. He promptly rolled double 6's. The mage exploded and sucked a unit of Bretonnian cavalry into the cold void of Chaos... He felt so bad for me as I picked the unit off the table. "I'm sorry I killed all your guys. The dice were just sticky is all." Kids! And now I'm teaching him to play 40k with my artillery-heavy Imperial Guard. Hopefully his scatter is better than his magic...

I tend to stay away from helping new players, they never like my advice. Like this one tyranid player who asks what he needs to get better. I say "Tervigons" He says to expensive. I say "Carnifex' too expensive. I say Biovores.....you get the point. They want to win the game, but they dont want to spend money.

I had a friend I occasionally got pizza with that I saw playing some weird wargame I'd never heard of. He wound up having a pretty nasty seizure, but the TO of the event he was playing in offered to let someone else finish the game he was playing. So I got conscripted to run his army, which I was hurriedly told were basically 'space zombies.' While my friend's Necrons didn't win the tournament, I did manage to deliver a crushing defeat to his opponent in that particular round. That's how I wound up getting into 40k.
