This. Unless its multiplayer gameplay is going to rival games like Battlefield, CoD, Counterstrike or Team Fortress (which I highly doubt it will and after watching the gameplay footage am 99.9% sure it won't), I just can't see this game as anything but a pointless release for people who actually care about gameplay, and just as a way for Games Workshop to capitilize on all the younger 40k/Spacemarine fanboys.
An RPG could have been unique. Could have its own version of competitive and unique PvP, simply due to the fact that they would have had to make their own skills, and this immediately makes it a different game to WoW even if they had absolutely no originality left after that. Also the skills would likely be ones converted from the tabletop game too which would have been VERY cool. An RPG could have had an amazing story, and a great way to make use of the amazing 40k lore. A WoW-like or even a multiplayer Borderlands would have a lot more to offer and certainly seems like it would appeal more to the strategy gaming crowd. Maybe I'm wrong though, since a bunch of you all seem very satisfied by this footage of a marine running around with a targeting reticule the size of a wrecking ball with no crosshair spamming bullets mindlessly, so I guess maybe this appeals to more people than something with a little more depth. To me it just seems like the lazy option though, being dead honest.

Meh. Early alpha footage etc etc but it just doesn't look fun nor original.
It may be good but I have always had a high degree of sceptism about this game and nothing that I have seen or heard so far has made me optimistic.

If they can get this working well on the scale of planetside two then I think it will be a big hit, I am looking forward to seeing how it develops.
I am looking for massive battles with loads of different sorts of multi player vehicles and such, if this is what we get, I will be a happy bunny.

I agree with you dude, I played Space Marine because i like 40k. As a game it wasn't very good at all. Single player was press 'X' to continue and MP was really bad. I was hoping for a proper MMO that was going to be the size and scale of WoW but in the 40k universe, also a skill tree that would require some skill to play. This game will die quickly im affraid.

Completly agree I think this game has a ton of potential and the developers have been very transparent on their direction on the game. Yes it does bare strong resemblance to Space Marine but I think that is because they are showing "space marines" in a 3rd person shooter lol. If you look at the chaos marine they showed it looks hardly anyhing like the chaos space marines in the previous SM game. If you follow where the game is going it is so much more than SM with four starting factions and plans to add more after release. Also plans for elite units such as Librarians and vehicles etc if factions choose to allocate resources for these. The developer never indicated it would be an RPG and right up front said it was to emulate TT as much as possible in a third person shooter environment. I can understand the skepticism given the recent cancellation of other 40K projects that looked good but I still think it is premature to get to down on the game.

An execution animation? Not really purely cosmetic. In these third-person action games a lot of the balance comes from the animations... this gives me a seriously bad feeling. I'm not against F2P as a model but it's got to be done right, in a way that doesn't affect balance. Not prejudging it or anything but it's a worry if they consider animations something to be monetized

I just lolled when I read this.
In any case, I imagine Guard would work how it does in 40k: by numbers. Just adjust the spawning slots or something to compensate, for example 1-2 min spawn for a marine, but guard can spawn instantly.
You could even have all players starting as IG, and have SM unlocked at certain level. Noobs running around as IG would make perfect sense Or rather, having them start as Conscripts, then advancing to IG and unlocking Vet / SM paths after that. Dunno what you could give to IG to make the IG class as interesting as SM class, though - but then again, there's always 'roleplayers' who play even the worst class.

From the current info released IG are not added to the faction lineup and SM's are going to be a playable faction right from the start. There was a poll in the community forum asking which additional faction people wanted added after the main four. I believe Tau won by a landslide.

I'll probably still check it out since it's a 40K game and all, I just was hoping for a game that would be more "questy"
Not a big fan of free to play either, unless it's done right and doesn't give unfair advantage. I'm most likely never going to pay for extra stuff, being poor and all, and I don't want to play a game where free to play = free to be noobfodder for the people who pay to be uberer than you. I think Dust 514 did pretty good with the free to play thing, but then I haven't touched that game in a while, it got real old real fast.

Space Marine was a great game to be sure, but I don't know if it translates well into an MMORPG.
Something deep inside my heart is hoping that this won't just be Space Marine with more playable races and end-game content...
If it's more like Gears of War, then I'm on board. Especially if they utilize a similar system of taking cover.

The developers already confirmed there will be a cover system and they referenced Gears of War as what it would be similar to in style. SM didnt have a cover system in order to give the feel of invulnerability etc. I am in favor of a cover system as well only because I view TT as a bit of the ideal to try and emulate and of course cover is utilized in the TT game.

I think you missed my point. I can tell the difference between a third-person arena shooter and an FPS. I wasn't specifically referring to this game, I was trying to make a broader statement - the guy obviously didn't want a WoW DLC that gave everything a 40k skin, just something of the same genre in the 40k universe. Ruling that out because we already have WoW is stupid - no matter what genre they classify this or almost ever game as - there is probably going to be at least 5 recent releases with the same genre. Good games build on what we know - had we never made another shooter after we made Doom, we would have missed out on a lot of good games.
I realise that everything I've said applies in reverse - yes possibly this is the next step that takes 3rd person brawling to the next level - but considering how mind-numbingly repetitive such games are by nature, and how challenging it is to differ from the norm, and how this whole thing reads and looks more to like another way for GW to trick people out of money - I just can't see this release being a better game than any MMORPG alternative.
Easier to code, and make a quick buck off? Yes. POTENTIAL for better and more gripping gameplay for an experience that will last with you much longer? Nope.

This game is not an MMORPG.
What we have seen so far is simply the devs tootling about in a very basic arena. That was in essence SM multiplayer, yes.
The intention of EC is to have an entire planet to fight over during each campaign. Which areas are attacked and defended is meant to be decided by the 'high up' players of each race. But there will be open field combat as well as urban areas.
There are going to be vehicles, i believe. And AI-controlled Tyranids acting as a balancing factor by attacking a faction that becomes overpopulated.
I think people are being very judgemental based purely on this footage.

That's quite a hilarious statement. I'm amazed how can be players so naive to believe Devs words. If it was as simple as making a big map and putting a lot of players there then there would be far more MMOFPS out there. The main reason this doesn't happen is technology limitations. Even PS2 with Forgelight, an engine designed to host and handle big masses of players in a MMO world struggles to give a good performance to a wide number of different machines and systems.
We talk about an engine developed by a huge international as is SOE. And now comes a comparetively small company, therefore with a far lesser budget, human resources and "know how" and promises a game that will make PS2 look small and have a very ambitious metagame, based on a common engine. Sorry but there's no way I can't believe them. They're generating too much high expectations that I predict they won't be able to fullfil.
I'm not trying to be a nay-sayer here. I think they'll release the game, but graphics wise will be just Ok, battles will never be able to hold a candle to PS2 warfare and such an ambitious metagame mechanics will take at least a year or a pair to fully implement after release. That's a realistic approach not what marketing guys are used to sell us, but at least you'll be able to have your 40k MMO game.
