Didn't see this posted up yet. The company making Eternal Crusade put together a video showing a first look at gameplay.

Looks very similar to Space Marine both graphically and in terms of game mechanics. Personally, I'd much rather see it go that route than to try and go with a more RPG-ish combat system.

Honestly not impressed, I don't see space marines in a RPG world working out.

I mean FWIW, it looks like it's not going to be very RPG-based. It looks like it'll be similar to Planetside, basically a massively multiplayer third person shooter.

Oh just make a 40k version of XCOM.

A better, less buggy version.

For pre-alpha footage, it looks like it's where it needs to be. Looks an awful lot like Space Marine, honestly, which isn't a bad starting point.

Yeah, I loved Space Marine. if they can combine that with the larger game play of something like Planetside to this game could be great.

As many have stated it looks like Space Marine, which isn't bad at all. I loved that game. If it does take on a Planetside 2 scale, I will be thrilled to play this game.

The hook for this does interest me;
All factions battle for a planet.
Each faction will have a war council of players (Elected I believe) that decide on strategy for taking control of a planet.
Players don't have to obey the council but get bonuses if they do.
At the end of "a battle" (Weeks, months of actual play time) one faction will win that planet and the war moves on to another planet. At the end of the season the winners of the war are announced, prizes awarded.
Orks are the free to play race, so there will be a lot of them, all other races/factions are pay to play.
Tyranids are an AI faction that can be used to balance wars (One faction is too heavily populated by players so a gribly swarm starts munching their territories).
Allegedly 1000 people servers with open world PvP.

All sounds fun on paper, I'm interested to see how it goes.

There's a thread on dakka discussing the game here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/537854.page

Yep, looks ok to me. 40k: Space Marine multiplayer isn't a bad place to start.

I mean its nice, and i did have a fun time with space marine, turn it into an mmo?, dont think that can really work, more like some action multi player online sure, but other than that i think one gets tired of it rather fast. Lets be frank about space marine, as fun as it was, it was 90% carried by the IP, and that gets dull rather fast.

If they are using the SM engine, it can clearly render and calculate basic phisics so i have to agree, why not just make a better looking and mechanically more polished X-com than this.

This looks fun to me. I enjoy shooters more and been wanting to see more mmo shooters for a long time.

I would assume because they wanted to make a large scale action game? Not every studio wants to make better X-Com games. Not that I wouldn't mind a game like that either but that's probably why BI isn't making one. With licensing though you never know, someone might do it. I know I'd love to see a few X-Com-ish games and not just for 40k.

Still this is looking good so far. I really felt Space Marine itself was a good start that could have done so much more so this being in that area now might be a good thing.

I mean, GW is using Creative Assembly to make their Warhammer: Total War game, why not get Firaxis to do XCOMunda? I'll just be over here in my fantasy land where cupcakes grow on trees.

Did you play Squad Command on the PSP? It's turn based, at least. It's OK, but it's no XCOM.

This definitely looks like it borrows heavily from Space Marine, which I really liked - will be following with great interest. Great to finally see some footage

Also, and I can't believe I didn't think of it at the time, but Chaos Gate? It's basically 40k XCOM. If you asked me to describe it, that's what I'd describe it as. It's non-trivial to get it running on a modern PC but it's doable, and it's well worth it.

Oy, this looks like they're taking the models from Space Marine and using them for the alpha.

No problem with that of course as they probably want to make sure the mechanics are sound before trying something.

I'd imagine this to be a mix of Space Marine and Dawn of War with the way it sounds like they're developing it.

Mmo means massively multiplayer online. In other words lots of folks playing together at once. It doesn't necessarily mean an RPG like Guild Wars.

This looks like just the first test with the models on a smaller scale.

Yeah, I thought this was gonna be WOW with space marines.. but it's more like a giant deathmatch? no for me then :(

At this moment in time I am thinking that it's a crying shame that DMO died a death.

I know it's a long way off and I am sure it will be much different and better than what this is, but currently it does just look like Space Marine. Not a bad thing but nothing impressive either.

No pity, no remorse, no shoes

Why would anyone want WoW again? We have WoW, it ran its course. This is going to be a massive shooter with tons of players per side and persistent characters with RPG elements.

Space Marine needs to kill 15 rats to collect rat pelts.

Quest reward - New Shoulder Pad.

Why would a space marine in a RPG setting go off and do his own thing, seperated by chapter, is the space marine part of death watch?

RPG elements make sense to me outside of space marines.

Guard, Tau, Eldar I can see it.

You're not going to find a Space Marine mining for ore to get a better pickaxe so he can mine for slightly better ore so he can get a slightly better pickaxe ad nauseum. They're here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and their supply of bubblegum is dangerously low.

I would have definitely loved an action-RPG esque 40k game like WoW or GW 2 ... this is not for me.... I'd think most 40k gamers (being a strategy game and all) would have been far more interested in a WoW-style game...

First person shooter? Why would anyone want Doom again? We had Doom, it ran its course.

If it's a giant match of Space Marine on a dedicated server that can handle a ton of people trying to kill each other...

Yes, please. But nix the vengeance launcher.

I just don't know how they'd balance the guard, etc.

But what if a space marine wants to make his own bubblegum?

There's already a bajillion other shooters out there.. playing the same deathmatch with a different skin gets old fast.. for me anyway. I was just hoping for something more RPGish, or like borderlands with space marines and tons of people instead of just 4.. maybe WOW was a bad example.
