The Renegade Open GT in MN is coming up this Saturday and Sunday and data about who is bringing what is starting to fill out.

Currently there are 59 people registered, 37 have some listed Army data with 22 Unknowns.

Unknown: 22
Eldar: 7
Space Marines: 8
CSM: 4
Daemons: 3
Imperial Guard: 3
Undisclosed "Chaos": 3
Grey Knights: 2
Space Wolves: 2
Tyranids: 2
Necron: 2
Farsight Enclave: 2
Dark Eldar: 1
Orks: 1
Tau: 0 Only Allied
Dark Angels: 0 Only Allied
Adepta Soriatas: 0
Blood Angels: 0

Now, the data is not great, but there are no mono Tau players and I am the Farsight Enclaves Player. My question is, where are all of the Tau players? This is not the army breakdown I expected. Granted, there are still 22 of the 59 that are still unknown, and some of the players can change their mind before lists are submitted, but I'm still shocked about it to be honest. I expected a dominant Eldar/Tau/SM showing. Maybe those 22 people are just finishing up the paint on their Eldau/Taudar allies.

Probably got tired of all the people complaining about tau 10x more than newdar for some reason.

That, or the tau players are tired of riptide spam and dont feel like they can play any other way lol

Lots of -players (WAACAH), like to put unknown for some Richard cranium reason I can't fathom, except D-Bagging it.

Yep, because just by seeing what general army they are taking as Primary gives us too much information to fine tune our lists etc.

Awesome, an O'VesaStar. I don't run one, but I know what they can do. Its a shame they do what I do, just with more punch... Would not be an easy game, but I'm sure it'd be a fun one.

I'm actually not that surprised. While the biggest GT's - Adepticon and Nova (and even the ATC) - ran with a lot of Tau, I'm seeing a lot of the smaller GT's to be not as Tau-crazy. It all depends on the local meta. Nationally, the best players are running some form of Tau but these players don't travel to the smaller GT circuits. These GT's are more of the local players (within the state mainly) and the local meta may not necessarily be as Tau-heavy. Take for example, the Golden Throne GT 2013 in the West Coast. It had a healthy mix of armies. Tau was represented but in no ways was it over-represented.

Another reason why Tau isn't dominating the GT-circuit anymore may definitely be the backlash from a rash of negative publicity. I see this also with the necrons early in 6th. They were so dominant early on (still are) but now not very many people run them anymore. Part of it was the the fear of Tau skyfire but IMO it was mainly due to the bad press that the crons were receiving as a "cheese" army.

Something tells me that "bad press" is not the answer at all. Human beings who want to WAAC don't give a gak about bad press haven't cared hundreds of years ago and they don't care now. Why would these gamers care as long as it nets them the win? They aren't really doing it for fun you know. They only have fun when they win, and sometimes not even then.

I understand the different Metas, but would have expected more of a Tau presence in general as almost every army barring Sisters and BA is currently represented, most in multiples. So far most of Wisconsin is rather Taulite that I have seen, now Eldar on the other hand is another story.

Currently 64 players, two Farsight Enclave, no Mono Tau.

IMO, they are now two Codices old and with Eldar matching so well against them and Grav hammering Riptides that is the reason we are seeing much less of them. I really don't see "Bad Press" being that big of a factor, especially at a GT.

Part of the reason might be missions.

The NOVA missions were almost tailored-fit for riptide spams (because lets face it, if the top lists had little to no troops, say what you may-you didn't need scoring units to win, winning by secondaries was easy.), don't know what missions this turny runs though.

Maybe its a bit more required to actually have strong troops, and the ability to take (and hold) objectives, where tau do not excel as much.

Also, people KNOW the tau lists now, they know to prepare for riptidespam, and part of the reason it worked from the firstplace is the "less heavy weapons" mindset of the start of 6th ("tanks die easy, who needs heavy weapons? oops, forgot MCs") that now people seem to grasp you need some heavy-duty anti-MC.

Excepting a few more tau to show up by the time the final army lists are presented, at least enclaves with tau allies. (because lets face it, enclaves have more fun with troopsuits)
Also, expecting a bit of AS, their "new dex" is rather efficient, with the alpha-strike doms melta spam, the cheaper pianos and the MM immos everywhere, no to mention them nasty priests. though its rather hard for army-hoppers to pick them up ATM

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

The truth is, WAAC players are just a small minority. Stereotyping people who bring the strongest armies as WAAC is akin to saying all blondes are bimbos...it's just not true.

Many of the competitive players, like me for example, have multiple armies and like to rotate our armies for 1) variety and 2) to challenge ourselves with an army not perceived as an "easy-win" army. Of course there are competitive players who use the same armies as well, but at the local events (even most GT's are local events), you're only going to see as many Tau armies as there are Tau players in your locale.

Ironically, it is this perception that players who bring the so-called "netlists" must be WAAC also one of the reasons why some of the players are deciding not to bring these types of lists.

My guess is that your locale just isn't Tau-heavy. From the last GT in your area - the Michigan GT - there wasn't really a whole lot of Tau players (and the ones who went really didn't do all that well). They still will probably show up. They just won't dominate the meta like they used to.

In short, the Tau players have already moved on just like the Necron players have.

I am also surprised to not see more Tau lists. However, I'm willing to bet that over half of those "unknown" armies are going to be tau/eldar.

Just because they are the most hyped right now.

I'm okay with playing against hyped armies, it's the power lists that I get annoyed playing against. My first and only other tournament I played in, I ended up getting paired against a 2 chaos players, 2 Orks and a Tyranid player.

I'll be there this weekend and am looking forward to playing a variety of lists.
