So let's suppose I'm playing Space Marines with Tau ally with Inquisition as another ally.

Can a Tau IC join a Space Marine unit along with an IC inquisitor? How would those two relate since they're desperate allies? Would, say, a buff commander positively affect the inquisitor? Or no effect?

On the Internet

I'd say that all the standard ally rules still apply, so even if the Marines bring Tau, if the Inqusitor is in 6" of them they have issues.

Another thing I think gamefaqs@gwplc.com needs to emailed heavily about until it gets a FAQ though.

That's a weird one because by all rights they can both join the SM unit, they are both BB. The bigger problem with this is if an IC is still defined as it's own unit when joined to another unit. If it does than you would keep having to check for Desperate Allies to kick in and affect the ICs, if not then there isn't a problem, they are just models part of a unit they are both allowed to join.

"for all rules purposes" the Tau IC is a normal member of the Space Marine unit

And the inquisitor is too. And units aren't within 6" of themselves are they? So you would have no problem with 'One eye open' either.

If I have Hatred: Tau do I get rerolls against the space marine unit containing the Tau IC?
If I have Hatred: Space Marines do I get rerolls against the Tau IC in a challenge?

Checking for desperate allies is a rules purpose - does the Tau unit stop counting as a Tau unit because it is with Space Marines (so the answers above would be no/yes)? How do we know if battle brothers or desperate allies takes precedence? Why does the Tau IC joining the Space Marine unit not make the unit DA to the Inquisitor because the Tau IC now counts as part of the unit?

I don't have my rulebook in front of me, so just thinking out loud... but man, the three-way allies problem seems like a giant cluster f* :(

Thank god we're likely to get an FAQ on it soon

Edit: If the Inquisitor can join, then he can cast powers on the squad from outside it, and similarly, if he cannot join, he cannot cast powers - I am sure there are tons of other ripples and implications on however this gets ruled. Joy.

Hatred Tau would not give you rerolls against the SM unit you are targetting with your attacks.

Hatred SM would not give you rerolls in a challenge against the Tau IC because in the challenge your target is the other model in the challenge and that model isn't a SM

Hmm.

Here's an interesting question, then.

Despite the fact that IC's are considered a part of the unit they join "for ALL rules purposes" (which would seem to indicate army affiliation, thus allowing the Tau AND Inquisitor to both join a unit they are Battle Brothers with) the overwhelming majority of the community seems to disagree with that rule applying as it is written.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/525801.page For a poll assessing people's opinions on the above.

These isn't the exact same issue, but it certainly seems related. If the IC loses his army affiliation when joining a unit, then he can board allied transports, as well as join a unit with an enemy IC, provided they are both Battle Brothers with the unit they are joining. If the IC retains his army affiliation on joining an allied unit, then he cannot get on the aforementioned transport, and cannot join the aforementioned unit. (Or possibly-could, but the unit would still have to take One Eye Open tests since it includes models that are enemies to one another?)

Interesting one. Or have I missed something?

Hatred SM would not give you rerolls in a challenge against the Tau IC because in the challenge your target is the other model in the challenge and that model isn't a SM

Then I do not see why joining the unit would negate the Allies of Desperation rules. The unit is both Space Marines and Tau, both Battle Brothers and Allies of Desperation. We do not have any sort of precedent on how to handle simultaneous ally types because as it was not even conceivable until this digital supplement came out... good times. When things are this murky people tend to err on the side of least advantageous, and Jimsolo's poll and post seem to lean that way too.

Good enough for me.

If you have a unit mix of Tau and SM, unless your counting Tau as a complete member of the primary detachment for all rules purposes that is still a unit of battle brothers AND allies of convenience. For all rules purposes is great but you should only take that so far with allies or it ends very messy.

Depends if you read

Counts as // part of the unit for all rule purposes

or

Counts as part of the unit // for all rule purposes

I believe he is part of the unit for all rule purposes but not that by joining the unit all unit rules override the rules the ic may have attached to him

Hatred SM would not give you rerolls in a challenge against the Tau IC because in the challenge your target is the other model in the challenge and that model isn't a SM

The Tau IC is considered part of the SM unit for all purposes. Therefore it is a SM while joined.

So, Hatred Tau would do nothing in either situation.
Hatred SM would give you rerolls, even in a challenge, as the Tau IC is still part of the SM unit, ergo, it is a SM for all purposes.
