Seriously? Anyone out there remember Unreal Tournament? Ok, how about Gears of War? That's the Unreal Engine!

So what if Epic Games, Microsoft, and Midway all got together and bought the rights to make a FPS multiplayer of WH40K?

You get to pick your race. Pick your class (it'd probably be basic, but have to be competitive with games like BF4 and GHOSTS, so Assault, Support, Engineer..or maybe not and you just picked up corresponding gear from the map actually), and then what special thing you were going to use unique to you at that time, and have at it. Maybe it has to be Red v. Blue for a while but everyone can pick their character from whatever race they want, so all races could be represented on the same team.

But do-able? For some reason I feel like this is what the Unreal Engine was made for! It's a great multiplayer that still releases and uses mods openly and freely if you want to use them, while lacking a decent story. And WH40K has an excellent story!! But it hasn't found a good gaming platform yet with optimal reach. They tried with Space Marine, but I don't think that has much of a multiplayer if any. Then again maybe I'm completely wrong and that's Unreal Engine, it has multiplayer and it's 3rd person instead of 1st.

2nd Edit: Just looked at the specs for Space Marine, and they were using something called "The Phoenix Engine" which is exclusive to Space Marine, by Relic. THQ was their partner, but THQ died. So yeah, they should totally partner with Midway and Epic and hammer that shizzle out!! Oh, I also didn't realize all the multplayer it had. Might be worth the pick up after all, though I didn't like the weapon choices or 3rd person-ness. It was tolerable with Gears of War and that was about it. But then that was also the URE. >D

I personally think they should do it with the frostbite engine with fully destructable terrain and vehicles (Battlefield style) but you can choose your faction and customise classes etc.

So if you are a marine you can take a bike, a jump pack, termie armour, predators, vindis etc.
Guard can be ogryns, ratlings, russes, basilisks, vendettas.... etc etc.

Then to balance it out between the factions like the guard / nids / orks / other horde armies would then get a bunch of NPCs to bolster the numbers on their teams, so that they can stand up to the much tougher marines / chaos marines and other 'tougher' armies...

And have a scorestreak type thing where after you earn a certain number of points in game you can 'upgrade' to become a Dread, MC, Warboss or whatever is a really tough thing for each race for the duration of that life... kinda like in starwars battlefront where you could become a jedi / sith after you score enough points / kills

just my 2 cents

"Camouflage is the colour of fear... I have no need to hide from my foes... I have no fear of death.
My colours I wear openly, they proclaim louder than any words, "I am proud to live - I am proud to die!"

I remember when we had a full 40k mod for tibes. Still have it somewhere. Was very nice and we had it fairly well balanced and the host evn had the option of setting up with one team being marines and the other elder or both races being available to both teams or both teams being one of the races and the race not used not be available. We had models for most of the armors and equipment but that made it so you couldn't join the game without first downloading and inistalling them.
I was working with the coder toad in another two races (we had started on orks) when the tribes community finally gave out.

The problem with Frostbite is that it's already stressing most systems to their capacities. Frostbite 3 did that to BF3 and PS3 after Armored Kill because the terrain was too much for the consoles to handle.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Space Marine is fairly limited, but lIke I said, I didn't pick it up. It's also 3rd person, and it should go 1st. >D

Titanfall could be interesting for getting dreadnaughts on the battlefield, but the maps look confined. Maybe the Planetfall 2 engine? i'm sure you could mod it for WH40K.

That's because consoles continue to be inferior platforms to the PC for gaming.

The Unreal Engine works just as well on a PC as it does on a console, if not better. >> Personally, I preferred playing Unreal on PC, myself.

Edit: Derp. Frostbite 3 for WH40K on a PC. Got it. ><

Wasn't there another project before Eternal Crusade that fell through because someone went bankrupt? And isn't that game more of an MMO something or another? Or do they plan to take it closer to Battlefield 4's closed map, brawl on a massive, destructible map with vehicles and such?

YES LETS USE THE BROWN ENGINE FOR WARHAMMER.

Seriously, look at any game recently made on unreal engine 3 or 3.5. It's nothing but brown filters and boring.

Besides, engine choice is pretty moot if the developer can't work with it. Seems kind of odd to point out a game engine and go OMG LOOK IT CAN MAKE GAMES.

I would much prefer it to be on frostbite or cryengine. PC master race and all that.

Frostbite 3 was actually not the problem with the example you gave. The PS3 had an absolutely horrendous system architecture that made most third party developers working on multiple platforms cringe.

Frostbite was not the only engine that the PS3 had problems with as a note.

The Unreal Engine has a well-known flaw in that too much audio input at once can cause system lock-ups(and not just on the PS3 admittedly, but the 360 as well). Where this really became noticeable was on Mass Effect 3 when fighting the Collectors faction in multiplayer. Too many players using biotic or fire based powers at the same time as a Praetorian engaging its laser eyes could cause a complete system lock-up for all four players if on the PS3 and on the 360 would cause the game to 'stutter' potentially locking out the host and noone else.

Titanfall could be interesting for getting dreadnaughts on the battlefield, but the maps look confined. Maybe the Planetfall 2 engine? i'm sure you could mod it for WH40K.

The maps we have seen so far for Titanfall "look confined", but then again we have only seen the lightest class of Titan as well.

Psienesis wrote:That's because consoles continue to be inferior platforms to the PC for gaming.

Not really. In the case that RedWing mentions it was the oddity. Armored Kill on the PS3 suffered not because of Frostbite 3 but because of Sony and their refusal to give out all the necessary tools for development on the platform.

BTW people talking about the 'Titanfall engine'. There's actually kinda no such thing, at least in terms of Licenses and Pipelines. Believe it or not Titanfall is running on a heavily modified Source Engine. You wouldn't be able to make any other type of game with it.

Also IMO 3rd person would kinda have to a must in a shooter game based around iconic art and miniatures. Space Marine benefited greatly from it's 3rd person viewpoint.

Alright, point taken. I guess I just like Unreal that much. -shrug- So be it.

Anyways, perhaps alternating 3rd and 1st person at whim. The reason I don't like 3rd person shooting is sometimes you're wheeling you're cross hairs around wildly at targets. The only semi-third person I liked was Fallout 3 and New Vegas, but again i played them in 1st person.

But yeah, I'd love to see an MMO of sorts. If not, I'd settle for a mass slaught-arena.

Do you like the engine or the game unreal? Cause now I'm just confused.

I love the unreal games UT2k4 is still pretty much the best FPS ever as far as I'm concerned. I would never say that about the engine though.

I love the game, and appreciate the engine that powers the game. I know it's woefully dated and under-powered but I think it was at least solid there and with just a little character modeling that could've been WH40K. I also have a terribly overactive imagination and must question myself on delusions of grandeur, hence you'll often times see me make retractions like that if I find myself drifting to error. Just something I learned in Science that helps me through the day-to-day.

I don't really see whats the point in this discussion.

What does it matter what engine is used to make a game as long as it looks nice, renders properly and runs well.

From my personal experience UT engine has the most problems with rendering stuff properly. Most games require external hacks to get decent fov and crossfire/sli just go haywire with every game. The only exception I know is Dishonored.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

The point of the discussion was to see if my beloved Unreal was worth the time to revamp. fix and then render to Warhammer 40k during this wave of nex-gen consoles, shooters and the like.

That seems to be more a lack of imagination on the developer side than the engine's fault. The following games had their brown bits, sure, but show off large areas that are VERY colourful and vivid. Just look at:

) the beach section in Bioshock Infinite
) Mad Hatter's Wonderland in Arkham Origins
) the opening snowy maps in Borderlands 2

I admit, I don't understand either why this thread is such a cry to use an Unreal Engine in particular - but if Epic's support and toolkits for their previous games are anything to go by, the new Unreal Engine 4 should be a fairly safe bet for up and coming developments.

Which iteration of Unreal are you talking about? The last version of Gears of War used a modified Unreal Engine 3. UE3 is 7 years old. The new wave of console dev is adopting UE4,

This. The pallete used by the developer is not dictated by the engine.

And for the record; the Space Hulk: Deathwing FPS is being developed on Unreal Engine 4.

This would be a valid argument, if the engine wasn't optimized to handle grain filters and the like. Which it is.

I think it should be a kind of combination of Star Wars battlefront and battlefield 4. So if you were good enough at shooting people in the face lots you could become one of the many hq's. Otherwise it's generally battlefield, the spawning on people mechanics could use drop pods or teleport homers.
