Whats your army look like?
What flavor of SM are we talking about?
A few good ones off the bat though are, Thunder fire cannons, Storm ravens, even the new centurions can be fun if your not playing DA

Ancient Venerable Black Templar Dreadnought
|
From my own experience:
Land Raider Crusader: Lots of twin linked snap fire shooting good for taking out middling troops and the biggest troop capacity with assault ramp and frag. I do not think I have had a single bad time using it.
Vindicator: People get awful scared when that hits the table; it tends to be target priority #1 for S10 AP2 24" fun.
Whirlwind: It is barrage, hide it somewhere and drop big template on people who get no cover save. Not as much shock and awe as the above heavies but, a steady horde reducer.

Thunderfire cannons are boss. The only reason I haven't gotten myself some 3rd party cannons is that I doubt BA will get them.

I would recommend that ole standbye of a Devastator squad. Cant go wrong with that choice.

How so? For some of us, we like the classic formations. Plus, the devastators lead into Apocalypse formations.

Because the Eldar and Tau have diminished the effectiveness of the lascannon and the rest of the marine heavy weapon choices basically suck. There's a reason havocs almost always have autocannons.

There are only two ways to make Devs work. 1) is to pair them with a Tau Commander. 2) Imperial Fists plus Prescience (Rune Priest, Tiggy, whatever)
The problem is that either a Tau Commander or a Rune Priest/etc is much better served with other units in your Army.
Devs don't do a lot of damage, and they aren't durable. You're paying a lot of points per man for Marines, who don't even do what Marines do well, which is sit on objectives and be annoying.

Imperial Fist Devastators with flakk are a decent stopgap AA unit that doesn't suffer too much switching to ground targets, though it's expensive. Extra ablative marines are needed to make it less than terrible. Otherwise, their cost efficiency and durability is too low to be worthwhile. Cheap psiquisitors are probably the best option to get them some Divination.

They still fail against a helldrake. Unacceptable for the pricetag. For S7 to be efficacious against AV 12 in general, you need volume. Marines lack volume.

Ironically Lascannons are better anti Heldrake units than Flakk, assuming prescience. Lascannons are 5 points cheaper. Without tank hunters 5 TL Lascannons has a 17% chance of killing a Drake, Flakk have an 8.2 (this is no tankhunters). And Lascannons are WAAAY better than MLs in general. That said, Devs still suck. Thunderfires are amazing.

Sad but true. Queue up the Metallica now.
I love lascannons as a weapon concept, but wave serpents and riptides just laugh at them. The new Xeno lists piss me off so much.

5 Lascannon Devs plus Tau Commander = dead Serpent a turn, and reliably 3 wounds on a Riptide. Better with Devestator Centurions though, so you can move around and put Lascannons into them. Tau Commander adds just as much to Marines as he does to Tau.
Just get creative with the modeling like my buddy did:

When the solution to Tau is to bring your own Tau, that's a problem to me.

Haha, well really it's a solution to Eldar. Marines can take Tau, I think. Eldar is the problem (everyone's problem)

Vindicators die a horrible death the second they come on the table. Thunderfire cannons are good, but against MEQ they lose alot of punch. Predators are nice, but fragile.
For me, Devastators (full squad) and Centurions are the go-to choice. IF tactics on Devastators is very nice, and the ablative wounds means the pricey heavy weapons will survive a lot more fire than one of the rhino-chassis tanks (except of course Bale-drakes). Centurions are slow, pricey, and kind of ugly, but nothing beats the look on an Eldar opponent's face when a squad of 3 annihilates their precious Wraithknight in a single turn

I would advise you against the land raider. Unfortunately its not on its finest days in 6th.
Thunderfire cannons followed by centurions would be my top choices

Lascannons are weak sauce against the power lists. Eldar girly men on jetbikes can bounce anti-tank energy weapons with ease.

Well unbuffed Lascannons for sure (which they always will be on a Pred chassis), Lascannons paired with Tiggy or a Tau Commander have value.

The heavy support section of the C:SM codex is the most hotly contended. Most of the stuff there is rock solid.
Centurions can give some excellent anti-armor firepower or just grav gun punishment. 5 twin-linked grav guns that ignore cover can deliver a deluge of punishment to a seer Council. Even with a 3/4 save, the sheer volume of firepower incoming will wreck havoc.
Storm ravens are good. They get better if you tailor your list to use them. I happen to really enjoy using them, but to each their own.
TFCs are rock solid. I've been debating putting one with a prescience inquisitor for extra damage and wound soaking. A TFC gets better by an order of magnitude when you throw a prescience on it.
Normal devastators can be good in the right list. They work well for lists that spam bodies.
Predators are not bad per say -- but with the benefits of chapter tactics, I am leaning more to devs in this book. If your running DA by chance, you want to take preds instead as the DA chapter tactics is actually a disadvantage and not an advantage.
Land raiders are still land raiders. Some armies have a hard time with AV14. Some armies will steamroll you.

Its worked out well.
with a psycoquisitor, you can -10 scatter against units with a psyker which is fun. and if you roll him as your WL and get the extra orbital, it makes for some fun multi barrage shenanigans
