The lead singer of the rock band Lostprophets has pleaded guilty to multiple child sex offenses, including the attempted rape of a baby.
Ian Watkins pleaded guilty to the "depraved" sex charges in Cardiff Crown Court in Wales on Tuesday, Nov. 26, the BBC reported. He admitted to the attempted rape and sexual assault of a child under 13 years old, "three counts of sexual assault involving children and six involving taking, making or possessing indecent images of children and one of possessing an extreme pornographic image involving a sex act on an animal."
Alongside Watkins, two female co-defendants pleaded guilty to various sex offenses against their own children, the South Wales Evening Post reported. He admitted to attempting to rape the 11-month-old baby boy of one of the co-defendants and conspiring to rape the baby girl of the other.
"Ian Watkins was the lead singer of a successful band, The Lostprophets," prosecutor Christopher Clee said, per Wales Online. "He also, by virtue of his plea, accepts he is a determined and committed pedophile. He has engaged in serious sexual offenses against two babies belonging to the female defendants in this case. Not only has he done so but he recorded and kept episodes of this abuse which were recovered by the police."
Clee said drugs played a "significant part in his offending against children," the BBC noted.
"This investigation has uncovered the most shocking and harrowing child abuse evidence I have ever seen," DCI Peter Doyle, with the South Wales Police, told reporters outside the court. "There is no doubt in my mind that Ian Watkins exploited his celebrity status in order to abuse young children."
The 36-year-old singer previously denied the 24 charges against him, according to the U.K.'s Daily Star. His trial was slated to drag out for three weeks. He and the two women faced a total of 32 charges.
Lostprophets formed in 1997 and went on to sell 3.5 million albums over the group's 15-year career. Watkins was charged with the child sex offenses almost a year ago. In October, the group disbanded.
"After nearly a year of coming to terms with our heartache, we finally feel ready to announce publicly what we have thought privately for some time," the band said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press. "We can no longer continue making or performing music as Lostprophets."
Watkins and the two female offenders remain in custody and will be sentenced in December, according to the Daily Mail.

What’s emerging about what he did is real sickening stuff. I won’t even repeat it here but it is stomach churning. Even Savile never stopped this low (as far as we know). He was brazen about it too, it’s emerged that an ex girlfriend found out about it and tried to report it to the police. He’s also reported as having told underage groupies about it and tried to get them involved. The police are still investigating other claims, so this may well not be the end of the story.

Yeah it’s a shame for them. Even though he was only one member of the band he was the front man, which mean the entire Lostprophets brand is corrupted. It’s just won’t be possible to listen to their music and not make the association. Had this been the drummer or bassist they could have probably just replaced them and kept on going. But not the singer.
But like you say the future of the other guys at the band is a secondary issue here. I wish them well with rebuilding their careers, but the main focus should be on Watkin's victims.

I've not listened to them in years and don't have of their stuff on my I-Pod anymore so I'm not going to have that problem.
But I would still feel uneasy ever hearing one of their songs. Heck I still feel slightly uneasy when listening to The Who, even though that was all sorted out ages ago and there was nothing to indicate that Townsend even looked at anything, let alone actually did anything inappropriate with a child.
Shinobi vs Dragon Ninja was actually played in a club I was in last weekend. It' will be interesting to see if the DJ plays the song next week.

Considering a bunch of Lost Prophets fans approached the police about him in 2010, I'd say the band probably had some inkling.

And if he was trying to entice groupies into committing these acts too then I very much doubt that his bandmates did not have their suspicions. Just like Sandusky - too many people prepared to look the other way.

Possibly, who knows? They may well have known some fans had made some claims, but that doesn’t mean they themselves knew anything concrete about what he was into.
With Sandusky there was evidence of a conspiracy of Silence. So far that doesn’t seem to be the case here and unless that changes I’m happy to give them the benefit of the doubt.

On a related note, what a bad time it is to be H from Steps. Who has the unfortunate distinction of having the same name. With the media probably just doing quick image searches and grabbing the first image that comes up it was only a matter of time before something somewhat libelous was published.

I don’t think you should blame the band for that guy’s clear lack of moral fiber to put it lightly. I actually like the lostprophets but loath the front man.

It's still along the same lines though. I think Tom Cruise is a fracking nutter and completely full of himself. I completely, 100% dislike the man and everything he stands for. Yet I love his movies.

Never knowingly listened to a Lostprophets track until this thread. I listened to the first minute of the track provided here just to find out what genre the music was in, not that it matters, probably might recognise a track from the playlist at GW if pointed out, might not.
Some people are already pointing fingers at the rest of the band, and all I can say to that is 'stop the witchhunt'.
Watkins is way worse than Glitter, Glitter was caught with child porn, this guy was allegedly doing all the stuff. I dont really want to even try to think about what he would do with a 1 year old, so will end all comments on his actions there.

From what is emerging about the details of the case Wakins wasn't exactly shy about the less serious of his inclinations. He was even apparently attempting to chat up underage fans on the Forum of the Lost-prophets home page and apparently showed some of the videos of him having sex with younger fans to people outside of his inner circle. Often casual acquaintances.
I understand why some people are asking just how much the people close to him knew and if they did know anything why they made no attempt to report it. But in the absence of any specific allegations or evidence of a cover up I think they should be given the benefit of the doubt.
I'm sure the police have already considered that and have pursued that line of inquiry.

Earlier this week, we learned that the allegations of child sexual abuse against Ian were true, and that he would not be contesting them in court. Until then, we found them extremely difficult to believe and had hoped it was all a mistake. Sadly, the true extent of his appalling behaviour is now impossible to deny.
Many of you understandably want to know if we knew what Ian was doing. To be clear: We did not. We knew that Ian was a difficult character. Our personal relationships with him had deteriorated in recent years to a point that working together was a constant, miserable challenge. But despite his battles with drugs, his egotistic behaviour, and the resulting fractures and frustrations within our band, we never imagined him capable of behaviour of the type he has now admitted.
We are heartbroken, angry, and disgusted at what has been revealed. This is something that will haunt us for the rest of our lives. Being in a band has always been a labour of love and a platform to inspire people, not to take advantage of them. It's still hard to believe this is happening and that someone we were once so close to has destroyed so many lives, lying every step of the way.
Our hearts go out to Ian's family, the fans and friends he betrayed, and most importantly, the victims of his crimes and others like them. We hope for justice, but also that Ian will truly take responsibility for what he's done. We would urge any other victims to contact the authorities.

Michael Jackson was never found guilty in a court of law. So by going off innocent until proven guilty, he wasn't a child predator.
