Subject: Romney's son saves 4 people fromcar crash, draws Ire for Tweet afterwords

This is a pretty "What?" type of story. After saving someones life, I think a bit of bragging is ok. I see nothing wrong with his tweet.
Josh Romney, Mitt Romney's son, is drawing some flak after rescuing four people from a car crash on Thanksgiving. It wasn't the act itself that sparked the ire of so many on social media, but rather the tweet he posted in the aftermath of his self-acknowledged heroism.
Romney tweeted a photo of himself standing next to the overturned SUV, writing:
"Was first on scene to big accident, see pic of car in the house. I lifted 4 people out to safety. All ok. Thankful." @joshromney
The photo and caption of the offending tweet quickly drew accusations of "humble bragging," considered by some an even worse offense than overt bragging. Why? Because the humble brag is not only doused with an obvious shot at phony modesty, but it also cheekily seeks the sympathy of an audience supposedly incognizant of what the braggart is trying to get away with.
Josh Romney Rescues Four From Car Crash
The humblebrag first made its way into the popular lexicon after it was coined by American comedian Harris Wittels in 2011. Wittels subsequently set up the Twitter account @Humblebrag; a compilation of what he considered the worst-offending celebrity humblebrags. On the page you can read just about every type of humblebrag, from the innocuous gloat to swaggering shows of not-so-subtle self-aggrandizement.
So how is a humble brag different from simply expressing modesty, you ask? Well, it seems it may be in the juxtaposition of the braggable act itself, followed by verbiage attempting to downplay it. This obvious whitewashing could be in the form of self-effacing humor, like this tweet from Jimmy Fallon:
Emmys tonight. Send good viiiiiibes. (that my tux fits.) - jimmy fallon (@jimmyfallon) September 23, 2012
A humblebrag can also be offset with an appeal for compassion following an unpleasant experience:
I just won an ACM, but don't worry I'm still stuck like everyone else in a Taco Bell drive-thru right now. @ACMAwards #ACMs - Cody Alan (@cmtcody) March 1, 2013
Other approaches include the "look who I'm with" humblebrag:
Remind me not to stay out til 2am w/ @kidrock again. Hurtin' for certain today.
- Lance Armstrong (@lancearmstrong) September 3, 2012
The "I'm not worthy" humblebrag:
It's been 10 years but I still feel so uncomfortable with being recognized.Just a bit shy still I suppose. - Emma Watson (@EmWatson) July 23, 2012
And the "I'm so humbled" humblebrag:
Very humbled to be selected for the TIME 100 this year! Had a nice evening at their gala, but their standards… http://t.co/28pV5uKg - Pete Cashmore (@petecashmore) April 26, 2012
The humblebrag is not limited to celebrities by any means. In fact, you've probably noticed friends and family posting their own brags in your Facebook feed or Twitter. It's becoming an all-too-familiar phenomenon as social media provides us with ever more platforms from which to blurt out these verbal selfies, or cries for acknowledgement and approval from virtual strangers. Kudos to those who can pull off a humblebrag, but we've yet to see anyone successfully do it.

First of all, I have EMT friends who sometimes tweet or note on facebook when they encounter an odd situation where they have to jump into action. I mean, in a culture where we tweet our poops, is tweeting something of actual relevance bragging?
And since when is Josh Romney a Celebrity? Mitt Romney isn't even a celebrity anymore. He is a defunct dead-end Politian. I don't see why anyone who isn't Josh Romney's friends would care what he tweets. He isn't a Celebrity, I followed the presidential elections closely and I couldn't tell you the names of any of Romney's children... why should I? they are basically adults and have nothing to do with politics.
Slow news week eh?

Man helps people out of wrecked car. Posts on twitter. Becomes scumbag. I have a feeling it's only because he's Romney's son. Here's some stuff he said about it using more than 140(?) characters that twitter allows. In a statement to ABC News, Romney explained that the accident occurred last night while heading home with his wife and children, following Thanksgiving dinner with his parents and family. “We exited I-215 South at 4500 South and came to a stop at the intersection. Just then a vehicle traveling at highway speed passed narrowly by my car, through the intersection and into the kitchen of a home across the street. “I drove to the accident site and entered the home where the car had come to a stop on its side. I opened the driver side door and spoke with the four passengers inside the car. Miraculously, they appeared to have no major injuries. I was able to help each of them get out of the car and lift them down to the ground. “My family and I are grateful that no one was seriously injured and glad to have been able to help those affected by this terrible accident. What I did to help the people involved in the accident is what anyone else would do who witnessed such a potentially dangerous situation.” Also posting the photo to Facebook, Romney said: “I was the first on scene to the huge accident on 4500 South last night,” he posted. “Fortunately, nobody was seriously injured and I was able to lift all four passengers out of the car. The car just missed us at the intersection and hit this house going about 70 mph. You can see from the pic that we are in the homeowner’s kitchen. Seems like a reasonable guy to me.

This really doesn't seem newsworthy at all, and he's not a scumbag for this. Guy's a Good Samaritan. He wasn't obligated to help, but he did anyway and took a crazy picture of the car in the house, assuming people would be curious what the hell happened and posted the answer before the questions. Shut up idiot news team and stupid people accusing him.

Also, how does this...

...entail "I'm not worthy."? To me it sounds like a famous person who just wants to go about her life as if she were not famous. That's not a claim to humility, its just the recognition of how fame feths with your life.

I don't think any of those tweets were bad. Especially not Romney, son of Romney.
I've read some humblebrags on facebook from friends that were just awful humblebrags, and I'm kind of surprised the ones offered by celebrities were so weak. I mean, I could probably fill half a book with the ones posting "I want to thank God for this awesome sporting thing I just did".

If you excise the Republican part, yeah. The same people that photoshop Hillary Clinton to look like Hitler also would whine about Chelsea, same as the people who exaggerated Mitt Romney complain. Again, this isn't news, just some jagoffs blog piece.

If I were him I would always identify myself as such, in the Viking manner. I am Romney, son of Romney, Champion of Mormon, who did rescue 4, (and so on).
I don't see any problem with his tweets. If I kill a centipede successfully I make sure to let people know, so I could only imagine how long I'd remind people of my heroism in his case.

This story?
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/11/29/us-usa-joshromney-rescue-idUSBRE9AS0TA20131129
It's a basic "Romney helped people" story. Nothing about Twitter being angry, or him "humblebragging" or anything along that line. If you are holding the Reuters story up as an example of how the OP's story is news then you are not being very truthful.

Romney wasn't humblebragging.
Humblebragging is something like "I just won the Superbowl, but I have to sit in traffic like everyone else. #humblebrag"
Namely, humblebragging requires:
1. Doing something extraordinary and mentioning it
2. Mentioning something mundane everyone does that you are doing (sitting in a line at the DMV, etc.)
3. Likening oneself to everyone else based upon #2 after mentioning #1 in the same breath.
Romney is a good guy for doing this and deserves praise.
