I feel like such an idiot for asking this.

So I was thinking of downloading it but considering I tend to get worried about downloading games from the internet, I felt I should ask if anyone has downloaded the game and if so, if there is any risk of computer virus?

Nope, it's perfectly benign, assuming you're downloading it from one of the official mirrors. Well, benign barring the chance of setting your motherboard on fire via processor overload.

ASCII tends to be very intimidating for new player, and the graphics packs that come with LNP make it easier to tell whats what at first.

You just downloaded the worst virus online. Now you'll see dwarves, dream dwarves, eat dwarves and skin cats for the rest of your short life before you kill yourself on despair because the dumb mechanic flooded the fortress in magma... again!

I've played it fine on Windows 7 PC.

I should really check if it works on my Windows 8 laptop.

I played that game. Pretty fun, but I couldn't really get anywhere and I decided to stop playing before I completely dedicated my life to it. I'd already gone down that path with EVE Online...down that path madness lies.
