I think possible rose-tinted spectacles there..
Most of them were basically cheese wedge-shaped remote control cars with no weaponry whatsoever. When they did have a weapon, they always used to go on about some spike having 200lbs of pressure or whatever, and then it would be some tiny piece of metal emerging out the side that would slightly nudge the other 'robot' out of the way while the commentator tried to sound excited about it. Or they would get wedged on a 5mm-raised piece of the scenery for the rest of the game..
Perhaps one day there will be a true 'robot wars' - of fully autonomous units of various designs (other than just remote control cars) taking each other on. Or, maybe giant crewed ones fighting out in the desert, one of which will look like a scorpion

I liked to see how the "arms race" in the show evolved. One year, spinning bots and flipping other robots were king. The next year, everyone had robots that were wedge shaped so when they were flipped they could keep driving. Then, they had to start coming up with designs that could pin down other robots with spikes and such.
Good times.

The walkers competition they held once was interesting... If only for the technical aspect; it's hard to make a walking robot work That's the one my Dad entered with the awesomely named but totally fething useless Anoraknid
They only ever had 4 walkers on the show IIRC... I've tried to find them on Youtube but no luck
