I've played in. A lot of tournaments. From experience and what I've seen I would suggest the following to ensure some semblance of balance. 1: 1850 , just right amount of points and hopefully can be played in reasonable amount of time
2: strictly enforce painting and no silly proxies. You can't take a gundam z and say this is my new riptide so I have a better chance to win.
3: no allies. They cater to the powere gamer with endless combos of cheese that have NOTHING to do with the fluff. Tau & eldar blood brothers...PLEASE ease the cheese!!
Just a few thoughts ....

Someone used a Gundam as a Riptide?

Yes and I've seen worse , it's like let me take whatever Crap and magically say it's this... So I have better chance to win. What you see is what you get should also be enforced. Allies escalation all the other stuff can be fun for friendly games but a Tournament is different.

Where did these tournaments take place?

Were you the TO?

Are you a new TO and you're about to host your first Tournament?

Best of luck!

I think there has to be a point where if you're not even bringing miniatures to a tournament it's time to stop playing. 40K isn't BattleTech. You can't just play it woth tokens and scraps of paper.

I agree , My club has run many tournies that I've helped organize. What do you guys think of a tournament like that?

Yeah, out some of the turkeys and tell us where they play!

I did use Happy Meal Ninja Turtles as RipTide proxies for a casual game, letting my (two game) opponents know in advance. I haven't used RipTs since. No way those would have flown at the monthly tourney.

But this reasoning Ill win at everything forever! Painting should be like 70% of your battle points

People should just man up and play with what they have. In lieu of chasing the new must have. I don't mind 4 rip tides. As long as you bought me modeled and painted them why not. But when you use ridiculous proxies to help you win.... If you can't afford it man up and win with what you DO have. Supposed to be a challenge right?

I like all three of your points and that is exactly the type of tournament that I would attend.

I largely agree with you if the army is not themed. I would have no issue playing 5 Gundam Riptides if they were all modeled and painted representing the gundams in one of the gundam series and the rest of the army was modeled to match.

More of an issue with it if it is just guys trying to power game with no thought put into the army.

I had a guy bring in a toaster to use as a Land raider. I laughed and continued to play but ya you have to draw the line at some point. Granted this was a casual game but in a tourny setting where people pay good money to see cool models you need to take it seriously to a certain extent.

As for overall stuff it does not really balance the game at all.

Guys with money to field the best army will still win (moreso now that others cannot field cheaper counts as options)

Tau, Eldar and daemons, don't need allies...so they still will dominate....

We have too many threads right now about the new 40k rules and balance in tournaments.

Please post your comments/suggestions/thoughts into other existing threads (or at least take the time to create a more robust conversation instead of just posting 3 quick concepts).

yakface's 40K rule #1: Although the rules allow you to use modeling to your advantage, how badly do you need to win your toy soldier games?
yakface's 40K rule #2: Friends don't let friends start a MEQ army.
yakface's 40K rule #3: Codex does not ALWAYS trump the rulebook, so please don't say that!
