I didnt see where else this would belong or a section for fantasy flight rpgs so please let me know where to move this if need be.

A friend just got all the stuff and is wanting to first time attempt to gm and is really stoked about it, i was curious if anybody has any tips or tricks for gming and general play that might help. (Specifically good careers, what to avoid, etc)

Im also interested in gming locally at some point but have never played a ff game, i do have experience with dnd and white wolf games though.

Finally, my friend is working on trying to make this work through roll20.net and would like to see if anyone may be interested in playing

It's a fun game I've GM'd it a few times. The troubles we had were with establishing distances, cover, range etc when in combats. We almost ended up making it too complicated with elaborate maps and diagrams to conduct our battles.

I would try to avoid that and simplify combat, unless you really want a hardcore detailed mechanic.

It's got great mechanics overall and its an RPG set in the 40k universe, so it's pretty much a slam-dunk in that regard if you're all fans. Non-fans of 40k might not enjoy it so much.

Also the online thing...it's a pain and quite invovled, and not very fun IMO. More like a chore to constantly respond and update the story. I'd stick to gaming at the dinner table!

I was noticing they were a little vague and doing a loose narative kinda thing should be easier than the whole grid to size but maybe just tokens for relationship.

I'm stationed in Hawaii and all the other players are splayed throughout tennessee and some several hours away so the goal is to keep a close friend group of 40k lovers together (not seeing it work out with a 5-6 hr time difference, but oh well)

Get a wipe-clear grid map and some figures to phys-rep the characters and any bad guys.

It's very cool to say 'here's tonight's combat scene' and set everyone up on it, and not hear from a player 'but i wasn't in front of x, I was behind cover at y!'

I think Chessex make a good one.

Seconded. Makes everything SOOOOOOO much easier.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.
