I mix my vodka, but that's pretty much it. I mix my gin and rum on occasion, but not always.

Depends. If it's scotch/whiskey - it's neat. I've consumed rum, gin, and bourbon neat, but I prefer a mixer. Vodka and tequila both need mixers in my opinion. And I'm sorry, tequila isn't that bad of a drink - don't give me salt or a piece of fruit to take a shot of it

Ahhh. I think that may be my disconnect. I'm an almost exclusive "neat" drinker as I don't drink soda. Automatically Appended Next Post: mega_bassist wrote: cincydooley wrote:So question: how many of you are mixing your liquids with something and how many are drinking it neat?

I've recently discovered "good" tequila that is intended to be sipped. I hate shooting tequila, but I've been able to get behind sipping it.

I honestly only drink soda when I'm drinking booze. One of my favorite mixers is Crystal Light.
And I've been told that by a co-worker who's from Mexico...but I've only had higher-grade tequila once when I was at his house I will agree, the nicer stuff is pretty great, and smooth as glass.

I generally take my rum with either a coke or a ginger beer ( Mmm dark&stormies)
Gin in the form of martinis. Not sure if the splash of vermouth should count as mixing.
Bourbon on the rocks, otherwise unfettered.
The Wife likes cosmopolitans. If I'm making one for her, I'll often make two and have one myself.
We generally don't keep soda in the house, so I don't have mixers on hand. After a party where we have leftovers, they tend to end up with a shot of booze in them. Most of our mixed drinks are drinks of opportunity, where I slap stuff together from what's on hand. Or just drop a jigger into something like a cup of coffee or mulled cider.
On that note, here is my recipe for mulled cider. (well that's what the recipe is called, we use apple juice.) I use cran-apple juice rather then pure cranberry and omit the sugar. I didn't know what I was missing until I grew up and was old enough to drink. My folks aren't rum drinkers, and didn't add the booze when we were growing up, so I never had the rum in it until I made it myself. It really makes the drink sing.
Mulled Cider
1 whole cinnamon stick
16 cloves
1 tsp. whole allspice
whole medium orange studded with cloves (or fresh orange zest)
6 c. apple juice
2 c. cranberry juice
1/4 c. sugar
dash lemon juice
1 c. rum (optional)
Simmer everything, except the rum, as long as you like. It makes the house smell festive at Christmas. The rum should be added before serving or can be added by jigger to individual servings instead of to the whole pot. If you want to be neat, the whole spices can be tied in a cheesecloth bag and removed before serving.

I'll mix my rum, gin, vodka (I so rarely ever get vodka) and Bourbon.
I'll always drink neat my Single Malt Scotches...to mix them would be heresy of the highest order. I do know that some folks prefer a good single malt on the rocks, but I prefer mine to be completely neat, as for me, room temperature is where the best nose/flavor is at. Ohh, and I don't really mix beer either.... I mean, outside of Radler, I don't know why you would (that doesn't include mixing beer with beer, a la Black and Tan, Blacksmith, etc)

Thanks for the recipie! Will give that a shot this year.
I'm a big fan of any European beers - especially Innis and Gunn, which is a delicious toffee beer that is aged in used whiskey/rum/sherry/bourbon and etc barrels. It's amazing. There are several types, which you need to go try, right now.
I rather enjoy any golden rums, as well, and where port is concerned, I particularly like 'Graham's 6 grapes reserve' port, which is full of flavour and very, very rich.
And if you like fruit wine, and/or dessert wine, check out Elephant Orchard winery, it's a few hours from me in BC, and they make the best fruit wines I've ever had. Great stuff.

Then I'll throw some Coke in it.

Just enough to darken it up and make it look like it's more coke than rum?

Hey, if the rum's already dark, you just need to throw in enough to make some bubbles for appearances.

Or just poor a larger glass of rum.

My go to drink for when one must get crunk is vodka and grape Gatorade.
Otherwise: Scotch, vodka martinis, and screwdrivers.

I have kinda garnered a reputation amongst my friends as a fancy drinker. That is to say, I add ice to my drinks, have occasionally tried my hand at making cocktails, can compare the tastes of a half-dozen different forms of hard alcohol, and only drink good beer (Guinness, Corona, or an Artisan Beer only, nothing that comes cheap in a plastic cup). That being said, there comes a point in any evening here I just start drinking from the bottle. And Pretend that I'm a pirate. Because I'm drinking rum. And the bottle has a cork.
Also? I don't get hungover. Or embarrassingly drunk. This annoys everyone else to no end.

I'm with dogma on this, it's more of a way to end the night.... But I guess if we were the dude, it would be the way to start the day, start and end business meetings, end the day...
I also went through a stage in college, where I would drink those at the 'fancier' house parties I went to.

My favourite drink is beer, generally of the lager variety or German wheat beer.
Unfortunately I cannot afford it much so normally drink red wine, a lot of it in the past. A warning for all those out there red wine has contributed greatly to me having 3 teeth pulled this week as passing out without brushing is not a good combination.
I rarely drink spirits as it seems to have an evil effect on me, rum- angry , whiskey - angry , gin - weepy, about the only form of spirits I truly enjoy is Caipirinha - that drink is pure awesome.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.. If I go cerveza, I do prefer Dos Equis.... the first time I had Corona, I had already drank 3 beers, and fairly well enjoyed it. So the next opportunity I had, I ordered one as my first beer, and couldn't drink it.
For the record, yeah, I know most Aussies hate Foster's. and like I said earlier, "how can you drink Fosters?".... "quickly" lol
