I bought myself a bottle of Highland Park today while I was Xmas shopping for the family, so I am looking forward to tonight.

My Irish I drink neat.
My single malts get a small splash of water (no ice) to "loosen" the flavours".

The cognac goes down neat.

The beer - cold and in a glass.

Im still trying to figure out which of my bourbons to add a splash of water to get the most of the flavor. Haven't quite got it down yet ;-)

I think I'm just a beer snob. Haha. I think corona tastes like flavored water.

It's funny you'd say that, cause I ran into a friend of mine the other day who had been to the liquor store and bought Corona, and I asked why she'd do that when we have perfectly good water in our taps at home.

Some of you guys need to come hang out in Germany for a week.

We will teach you the meaning of beer.

I think the 2500+ breweries in the United States would indicate we're doing okay here.

Just because you have breweries doesn't mean you know how to make beer!

Seriously though: I am amazed at how many people over here have never had anything except Budweiser or Coors and then still think that "American beer is great".

Even if we only look at the last decade, I think the US has made some great progress on beers and the regional, craft, and micro-breweries are cranking out some great tasting stuff. We have a couple breweries here in Oklahoma City that are just wonderful.

But the market is dominated by MillerCoors and Anheuser-Busch InBev (who have gobbled up German breweries as well) and those guys just give us crappy bland tasting beers that should make anybody weep. Anybody that says "American beers are awesome" while holding one of those beers needs to be slapped . Anybody that explores the great local brews and says "Americans can make some great beers" needs to be encouraged and supported!

Long live the micro-brews!

And just to stay on topic, here is my favorite beer from our local brewery. It tastes great and I find the labeling great with my job:

Sadly, when I went to Germany I was still young enough that my parents put strict limits on my beer consumption. One of these days I wish to go back, and live off the beer for a week...

Tonight I am embracing my Das Horn for the first time. I am cleansing my palette after enjoying four or six Guinnesses, and then I will be trying

and

And yeah, I lived in Germany for the better part of four years, and my beer ratings go from 1-10 with a special category at equal standing to 10, entitled "Tastes like German Monks brewed it." which only a single beer in America has been rated, Schells Hopfenmalz. And that might just be because I haven't been back to Germany in years. But it is a damned tasty beer.

- Okay, the Voodoo was pretty much garbage. Not bad at a regular beer price, but for premium? Pass. The Ommegang is very tasty. A lot of fruit and spice. I don't know if I'd like more than one or two unless paired with a suitable meal, but enjoyable.

Whisky in all it's shapes and forms, mainly neat but if you've got a cask strength (45%-70% alcohol) you probably need to add a touch of water to release the full flavour

with a preference for Scotch 'Island' malts with a load of peat and iodine in the flavour

so

Talisker(probably my favourite), Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Bowmore, Highland Park, Jura plus a bunch of smaller distillery's products

I'm also really fond of Dalwhinne which is a much lighter malt with lots of floral and honey notes

SBG, thanks for the introduction to Innis & Gunn. I got a couple of bottles for my dad for Christmas, and he liked them a lot.

For those of you that like rum: picked up a bottle of Kirk & Sweeney this weekend and it's amazing. Highly Recommend it.

This doesn't sound like it would mix well.

It doesn't. It tastes like Dimetapp. I developed a taste for the drink in undergrad.

I am quite a fan of the pleated whiskeys too. Really like laphroaig despite the fact my it somewhat reminds me is a mix between tcp and cigarettes.

Was getting into bourbon a while back too. Don't really drink much latley though.

I do a bit of brewing myself beer mostly and not that “Mr. Beer” crap either. Its in the blood. Great grandparents imigrated from germany and started schoen brewery. I have looked into buying a still since a friend of mine owns one. He has been known to make some white lightning and some really flipping good cherry brandy once in a while. But you didn’t hear that from me.

As for buying the cause and the cure, I mostly stick to some old favorites. At one point in time I was a bit of a booze snob. I bartended and bounced in college. I have since started drinking the stuff I enjoy.

Stolichnaya vodka (I LOVE a dirty martini or a vodka tonic when I get home)
Crystal skull vodka (see above)
Kraken rum
Sailor jerry
Captain Morgan’s (my fiancé loves it)

Also I love PBR and I don’t give a fat squigs ass who doesn’t. You don’t get blue ribbon for second best!
