They don't look finished...

The snow basing sure is heavy, which might have been what you were going for, but the gun and the armor look like they are only primed.

I would go for a light/dark grey to make them "pop" a bit more. Maybe paint the guns metal, then apply a SMALL aount of snow camo. I believe MW2 had a good example of how to do it.

I was going for a heavy snow. And the armor is based white, then painted grey , then dry brushed with white. The guns are based white and dry brushed bolt gun it was going for a white washed and worn effect.

I get what you were going for, trust me, but the end result looks unfinished. White on white with more white looks kind of bland. Again, I would suggest maybe either making the armor darker or the cloth darker to offset the white and of doing the guns as a black/grey/metal and doing a snow camo/strips over the top of it.

I'll take that into account, I feel tey look better in person. I am going for a frosted over effect. If anyone has been in the actual arctic for military stuff everything starts to freeze over after a while. But I'll frgginately have to experiment with it a little thank you for he advice

I too see where your going, but unfortunately have to echo the comments of they just don't look finished. I'd single out the guns and faces as tings that could really use some work. Keep experimenting though, it'll come together!

I agree with HappyGrunt. The armor and weapons need a darker color. I like your bases though. You may consider painting the hands gloved too.

I would go with a grey, generously washed, then highlight with a 50/50 grey+white. You could try for some rugged looks by painting a tiny bit of PVA and snow flock onto flat parts of the helmet that snow might collect on, like above the eagle and on the ridge in the back/above the ear.

Washes are your friend.

There are many varieties of flesh wash available. Thin a flesh wash with a wee bit of water and apply to faces and you have instant depth. Rehighlight with your flesh color and it looks even better.

Consider using a thinned blue wash for armor and guns. Once again, it adds a bit of depth and variation while still having a winter/snow feel.

I ran into a similar problem as you and washes helped greatly.

Good luck. Looking forward to seeing updated photos.

See I was considering the a blue but I dont think it fits, I am modelling my guys after my extreme cold weather gear I get issued. No blue, its all just white, gray and a little bit of black, I will try and get some better quality pictures.

Unfortunately, translating reality to that small a scale doesn't always work, since the eye doesn't necessarily process it correctly. A lot of great looking minis are great looking not because they are realistic, but because they look like what your mind's eye THINKS reality looks like. (40k Guardsmen look fine to most people, but in reality their hands, and guns, and to a lesser extent their heads, are massively out of proportion.)

Some more definition would be good, like making the 'grey' patches in their camo darker, for instance. Blue can also work. Making the gun a very contrasting color is a good idea. The shoulder pads, the flak armor, and the helmets are all good choices to add a spot of color, and I don't think it's too far afield of the fluff. ("Oh, your body armor doesn't match your camo? Tough noogies.") Squad markings or infantry designations from the decal sheet can be used on the shoulders too, which breaks up the field of whitish tones nicely, and clues the eye in to the fact that the figure isn't as monotone as a casual glance makes it seem.

Don't get discouraged though, you're doing great! Your snow bases are far better than I've ever managed to do, which is saying a lot. I think it's the hardest base style to manage, and you've done it pretty well. If it were me, I'd paint the rims black, but that's a personal preference issue.

Really cool idea for a scheme, but I wonder if the ice/snow look might be a little overdone? Take a look at some pics, here is just a random one of some Finnish soldiers in the snow. The face is kept clear of snow:

The only time you would see so much ice/snow is when it could settle, i.e. on a corpse, and I have to be honest this is the first thing I thought of when I saw those minis

Cool they look pretty darn well camouflaged to me. From an artistic stand point they could look better but honestly, in real life when making a uniform for the purpose of hiding in the snow they dont go "it needs to pop more, they look bland". haha i like it anyways. I do something similar with my tanks. Just a simple colour scheme for camo purposes. Its not artistic but its practical.

I like them. They had a purpose and that purpose was achieved.

Thank you guys, I just painted on their squad markings, pictures to follow soon. I hand painted a "17" on the right shoulder for the regiment and then a "1-1" for 1st squad 1st platoon. Like I also said earlier, they look amazing in person when you can actually make out the smaller details its just a case of a crappy camera.

Looks good to me; why make a standard arctic when you can make it arctic frosty?

I especially like the mortar bases; the bricks with the snow gives an image of some urban winter warfare going on

Good work so far.

I would reccommend that you apply some more to the skin though. Like a fleshtone wash followed by a bit of highlighting. it wont take long and the diffrence it makes is remarkable.

I feel sorry for your guardsmen though, having to stomp about in the snow without gloves. I tried that once and got cold injuries to my hands.. Bad memories dude.

The bricks are actually rocks, when the mortars are firing they have to be on the hard ground, not snow. lol and whereso Tedward? I am heading to extreme cold weather survival training here in the next two days or so.
