Hi, all.

I'd like your opinion of whether you think it'd we worth fashioning, or whether you could fashion webbing/combat harnesses for Guardsmen.

I know the sprues come with a canteen and a few generic pouches to glue onto your miniatures, but I'm thinking, if I get brave, I'd like to try and fashion a webbing harness for my guys. Look at any soldier post-1890 and there's straps and pouches everywhere.

The only thing I can think of is to try to fashion pouches and straps out of Green Stuff or other clay type... stuff. Maybe the straps can be made out of something easier than Green Stuff, I dunno. Maybe I could buy 'scale bricks' and use them as pouches?

But, saying that, does the 'heroic-' scale lend itself to webbing? Would I just have arms sticking up everywhere as they wouldn't fit over the webbing?

Any views, guys?

You could use fine mesh (used when plastering houses). My dad owns a plastering buisness so back in the day i used to "borrow" some fine mesh for use as camo netting. Look at the valhallans, they have one sack around their bodies (cant remember what that is called) id replecate that with the netting if you wanted it to be simple.

Personally i buy lots of canteens/ammo pouches/grenades from victoria miniatures and load my men up with that stuff.

Pig iron also does 3rd party sci fi pouches and backpacks that are pretty neat.

I think the main reason people don't do it though is because at 40k scale the model starts to look really messy and undefined. I realise this is goid for real soldiers, but not necessarily for tiny models.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Its also got a lot to do with how chunky GW current humans are. Its hard to actually put stuff on them at all really.

I'm thinking of the mesh that comes around interior plumbing hoses. Like you might see under your bathroom sink. You could cut little strips of that glue it on and put a pouch over the seam. Worth a shot maybe, but swastakowey has a point. You would have to maybe take a dremel tool to the models waist to shave it down. Super time consuming, and you can't just do it to one squad you know?

Cheers, guys. Yeah, I'm thinking the scale would work against me. Well, one can try I guess.

If you want to keep the 40K archaic/impractical look but still be kinda practical... i suggest buying capes/cloaks. Victoria miniatures sells them pretty cheap and they can make a model look a lot less empty if you know what i mean. A good alternative to baggage and its cheap with no converting needed.

With free shipping over 10 bucks its pretty cheap to kit out your men with

All the GW accessories are far too big and make them look terrible imo.

I just sculpt on realistic scale pouches across their front and usually a hydration carrier on their back in brown stuff (it's what I have handy). They are way too small but since heroic scale is all over the map to begin with it doesn't look too bad. I'm afraid I don't have any pics handy though.

Once I get into a rhythm it's about 5-7min per model to do them since they're just rectangles with a line indent to show the bottom of the flap and a small dot indent to represent a button or fastener.

I did a lot of this sort of thing with my Catachans. It was pretty easy with green stuff, and as it used relatively few commercial bits, it was pretty cheap. I did it in a fairly modern, plate carrier w/ MOLLE pouches sort of theme, but it'd be really easy to adapt to an older LCE or LBV style with no changes in material.

Here's an example:

Of course it is do-able, one way or another, but it will be a lot of work. I wouldn't bother, myself.

You might like to do it for a special HQ unit as a start, and see how you get on.

Cheers for the links, see that's what I had in mind. Just need to improve my Green Stuff skills now.

Get the 1/48 (not 1/35 - that's useful for jerry cans etc, but not pouches) vehicle stowage set from Tamiya.
LOTS of pouches. Then it's just some thin paper strips for straps, or greenstuff. Much easier than farting around sculpting them.

I got decent mileage out of some old Necromunda backpacks:
