i'm just asking if there is any reason you would not play someone, if they have a gray army, cheesed out list, just plain stupid list, anything like that. and for you who wont play with a gray army, how much of it needs to be painted for it to be ok? (about a fifth of my army is WIP)

If they were arrogant, stubborn, a jerk or broke my models I'd refuse a game. Otherwise I couldn't care less. 40k is just a game, who cares if you take an unpainted army of cheese?

I'd probably find an excuse to refuse a game with an overtly aggressive person. Or with someone who brought Triptide or another cheesy list to a clearly casual game. Speaking of which, I should learn to identify all such builds before I start playing regularly at a FLGS.

this.

people get very highly strung about others playing the game their own way, one persons fun is not the same as another persons fun. also flat out refusing to play someone becasue you believe the list to be cheesy is a poor excuse, a game is a game and you arranging a game with someone, turning up and saying to them that you refuse to play because of the list they brought is rude.

keep in mind it wasn't just you that took the time and effort to get to the location, your opponenet did so too.

personally I refuse to arrange games with people who have let me down in the past, such as cancelling at the last moment, turning up very late, and those I do not get along with at my FLG, and thats about it. I'm quite lucky that the majority of my FLG are respectful of other people's models so there has not yet been a cause put people on the no play list due to poor handeling.

I basically only say no to people I actively dislike. It's not about much more than that for me. Losing isn't the worst fate in the universe but not playing might be. =)

My problem is getting time to play enough and finding players to play with. I like to play tournament lists as I like to play at tournaments, but I'd totally be up for bringing a fluffier/less-competitive list if someone wanted. I have a fair amount if painted up "bad" units that I'd be up for playing.

I guess I wouldn't be up for playing some neo-Nazi douche or someone who used the word "rape" a lot in connection with their models. I've read that kind of thing a bit and it he's me down.

I'll play everyone and every list at least once. If their a complete jerk and I had no fun then I wouldn't play them a again. If they brought a reaver to a 1750 game however I'd probably keep playing against them and find a way to beat it. I don't mind a tactical challenge but a jerk? No thanks

If you don't try it, how do you know how bad it is? Every game I've played of 40k since the release of Escalation has used a superheavy on one side or the other, and I even ended up facing a Chaos Warhound in one game. It went spectacularly well, I had fun, and I barely won by two victory points (which came from the damage I did to the Warhound ).

There is only 2 reasons I would ever refuse a game, and that is if the player is a) actively cheating* or b) being abusive or impolite to me or anyone else.

I fully appreciate everyone has a different focus for the hobby, so I'll never complain about unpainted armies or 'broken' builds. If someone wants to put as much time into listbuilding or tactics as I do into ensuring my army is painted, that's their choice and I will always respect that. I myself don't like using inpainted models, but I would never be so presumptuous to refuse a game because someone else is using grey plastic. I always prefer playing painted armies, but I'd not refuse or accept a game based on that.

While I will play against tourney builds, I would make a point of saying that I play a fluffy and not-at-all optimised list, and that anyone looking for practice for a tournament would be better off playing someone else if that is their only aim. On the other hand, if they just want to chuck some dice, then I'm more than happy to accept. I've actually yet to encounter anyone using even close to a netlist, so this has never been an issue so far.

*by actively, I mean cheating during the game and trying to deceive me. If they ask 'do you mind if I move this unit as I forgot to earlier?' then I'll be fine with that. If, on the other hand, they just start moving a unit in the shoot phase hoping I won't notice then I'd take issue. Similarly, if they forget the AP or S of a weapon, I'd be happy to let them re-roll all dice involved. If they deliberately lied about the stats, and I knew they were lying, I'd probably quit the game.

I am selective with who I will play, which I guess qualifies as refusing. But it's based on some criteria.

1) I put time and effort into painting my army and expect opponents to do the same.

2) I show respect to other players and enjoy games that are free from abuse.

3) I don't always know all the rules but I don't cheat. I draw a line between an honest mistake and trying to take too many troops.

So, if someone rules afoul of 3 of those rules, I am always happy to help that person find someone else they may enjoy playing against more. WAAC players, spammy players, new guys learning the rules, even smelly players don't bother me. But don't stick 200 extra points of melta weapons in your list, start mouthing off about your beliefs about minorities / women, or bring your shabbily glued, unpainted models to the table.

Honestly, I usually won't play someone with a list that screams net/tourney list. I don't mind losing, but I at least like it to be a fair, if not even, fight.

Generally a jerk..
i dont mind cheesed outlists or WAAC players near as much. Against them, you can actually pick up tips and tricks and you can test and see firsthand how thier list types operate and teach you to watch the opponant's dice rolls more carefully, watch how thy measure more carefuly and so on and so fort as these will elp you come tournament time.
A jerk, you just cant do anything about. I'll use a player at a shop I used to play at as an example. he was a large guy (over 6' and built like an ox. Tattoos all over and this wild long hair. He talked loud and was a general braggart. In a game he would blatantly cheat and if his opponant was new to the game flat out lie about the rules, if his opponant was a vet, he would find ways to intimidate and threaten to get his way. We had a large overweight player with medical issues in a tournament. He wasliterally bleeding from his cales partway through the day. This guy tells him he will go around the table and kick him in the legs if he puts all his drop pods down near his favorite unit. e was actually ble to intimidate the guy into not aiming his pods where he wnted to and afraid to contact the TO about the threat. As the ill guy is a friend of mine and he is just generall a nice guy all around, I wish I had seen it when it happenedin order to have stepped in myself. later in the same tournamnt, I was forced to play him and he tried the same thing with me. Having worked in bars as a 'floor and doorman", working with killers in Job corps and generally growing up with very large people (I myself am 6'11", he just did not intimidate me so I did not let him get away with cheating. He got so mad he went to the TO and the TO told him I was right the jerk actually took his models off of the table and quit the gameleaving me to watch the other games that were going on. yes, i got the free win but it is just upsetting to see a player that acts in this sort of way even on a competative tournament level. No way would i ever play someone like that in a "friendly' game.

I will play any race out there as long as it's not one of the stupid "cheese" lists for that race. I will only play a person who want's to have a good, fun time. I don't bring any bad vibes to the table (other than berating myself for my reliably horrible dice rolls), and I don't expect them to, either.

I'm there for a casual, fun game. This isn't Robot Jox, where we are playing for the rights to friggin' Alaska. I will never play against the type of players who are only happy when things go their way. I will not be intimidated in a game of army men.

Unpainted armies are fine, for a certain amount of time, but if you're that guy who has a power build and leaves his army unpainted, so he can sell it on to fund his next power build list when the next power codex comes out then I have a problem with it as it's disrespectful to my fully painted army that I've pained over and not really enjoyed to paint either.

I also don't take kindly to unpainted armies because a guy is a rubbish painter, take the time and learn to paint then. To a certain extent it is a skill that can be learned and anyone can put the effort in to make sure they can paint up to a decent standard, it's lazy to stop developing that skill.

Interesting to read about people who are opposed to an unpainted army. Good thing I just sprayed primer on a ton of models yesterday... it was kind of fun because some had been sitting bare plastic for a decade. I got to see all the different shades of grey GW used in its plastics over the years.

At any rate I don't think I would want to play against anybody who constantly brags about how awesome their army/list is. It just really annoys me. When someone asks me about my list I usually give a pretty honest evaluation of how I feel about my units and point out some weaknesses.

Like watching other people play video games (badly) while blathering about nothing in particular? Check out my Youtube channel: joemamaUSA!
