Hi dakka, I'm 14 and know ALOT about 40k, Except dark eldar, but I have read the codex. Anywho, I was down at the LGWS just watching some 16-17 year olds play a game, when two people I would consider "kids" walked in, one had purple irks and one had gold tyranids, now you can paint them however you want sure I'm not saying anything about that it's just the way they spoke, the flatness of the paintjob, installer made me think KIDS. now, they noticed me watching and started talking to me, and turns out their my age, so I figure the older guys must consider me a "kid" so I want to know, when will you consider someone a "kid"?

I am also 14 and know a lot about the game, being one of the most competitive gamers in the group and often knowing other people codex's more then the owners do (strangely I don't own their codex's, I simply remember Warhammer stuff very easily) and I hate being considered a 'Kid' by other players. Why should it matter what age I am as long as I know the rules (which admittedly, not all kids do but it's the same with adults) and how to play. I would normally consider anyone 12 or under a kid, but when relating to warhammer their are no kids really, just new players.

Someone is a "kid" when they act like a child. Or are preceived to be younger or newer than the rest of their peer group. Its not necessarily a negative term, but like anything, can be taken negatively. "Kid" also refers to bring innocent or naive, such as a juvenile goat (which is also known as a Kid).
At 41, I find many of the teens I deal with to be more mature than the 60-somethings I know that act like kindergardeners. Althought I prefer the term "adult-children" rather the "kid".

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

14 is still a kid. But that's not a bad thing. You were born when you were born. People should judge you based on how you act. If you're pleasant to be around and play against, I don't think anybody should be too bothered by your age.

I guess it all depends on how old you are. I am 44. Anyone under 18, in Canada is not a legal adult. So time me anyone under 18 is a kid.
I guess, I would say 12 or 13. After 12, you are a teenager and suppose to be more mature, so no longer a kid.
That said, as others said before, too many people act immature so age doesn't really matter. It is on how you all act.

Well you are a kid. There's nothing wrong with that, and if you show a level of maturity and reasoning uncommon to your age people will respect you. If you don't, well, that's business as usual.
Kid is only an insult when :
1) used by teens, who are kids themselves anyway
2) used of somebody who's old enough to know better but acts like a kid
I understand your desire to be seen as a man but that simply won't happen until you're older and more experienced, close to your 30's, and even then it's up to you, I know a plenty of people over 30 who I think act like teenage girls.
All I'm trying to say it's fine to be a kid and mature folk won't think worse of you for being one (the immature might however). For the purposes of this game people avoid playing players who act selfish, unsportsmanlike and who throw temper tantrums - all immature qualities. Have you ever seen a table-wide base on an infantry model? Yeah no reason to play that guy ever.

One of to thing make someone a kid.
1) You ack like a kid, you can be any age and still count.
2) Anyone 20 years or so younger then me. ( OP your a kid by this standard, but what would you call a 4 year old, there only 10 years young then you ).
Note there nothing wrong with being called a kid, now being called a brat.

When it comes to people I'm GAMING with, 'kid' is a pejorative. I use it only when trying to patronize someone. I've played with fifteen year olds who were perfectly legitimate gaming companions, and I've played with forty year olds that I'd still call 'kid.'
Any player for the game, be it CCG, wargame, or RPG, is welcome to be treated like an adult as long as they can act like one. It's that simple, at least to me.

I am 14, and I recognize I am still a 'kid'. But being a kid does not mean that you have to act in a childish manner. I can act very maturely if I want to. Being a kid is not always that bad, at best it will lead older people to underestimate me However, sometimes I also get a lot of hate just for being young. People assume that because I am 'only' 14, I have to be a very childish person. This is not true, and it is not nice when this happens or when people don't want to play against me because of it. Please stop the age-based discrimination. Please stop using the word 'kid' as a pejorative (new word learned!). I get really cheesed off when people who don't know me at all start raging against me for being a 'immature kid'.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as Iron_Captain. Every time I go to a LGS or a gaming club, I will be mocked unless I can "prove myself" it is extremely irritating, sure some 14-17 year olds are brats and can't play/paint but it doesn't mean they all are. If you see a "kid" give him a chance... Please.

I don't tend to call anyone "kid". Sadly age doesn't seem to be such a great indicator of maturity. The tone of it also seems to mostly come across as condescending and somewhat dickish. Some probably deserve it, but they'd probably get a better name than "kid".

I have seen some 'kids'play very competatves, ask seriou valid questions and remember the answers along with the codex. I'm thinking of one in particular that the adults would often ask rules questions because the way this guys mind worked... it was almost like his mind's eye could actually see the pages in front of him and read them aloud and come up with reasonable answers. Very calm young man not given to childish behavior at all.
Even though i wish I was young enough to be considered a 'kid" again, I try not to call them kids either. I will usually say young man and even use expressions like yes sir or thank you sir to them as a sign of respect and to demonstrate that I think nothing less of them because of their age.
The adult 'kids' I just refer to as jerks if they are childish in the bad way. If thy are childish in a good way, I take it as a good sign that they are fun.
generally the only ones I refer to as "kids' are kids. The young children that a player may bring into the shop with them when they come to play or shop that are not yet old enough to play and see the models and such literally as army men. We are usually speaking under the age of 10 and can barely see over the top of thetable.

"Kid" is more your attitude than your age.
If you ask me for a game, and I can see you have the basic ideas of hygiene, manners, and the ability to speak without spouting out memes, I'm far less likely to consider you a kid regardless of age. If you come in with greasy hair, a fedorah, and act like you forgot your ADHD meds, I'll call you kid even if you're 30.
Of course, if you meet one of the grogs, they consider anyone under 30 to be a kid I still get called it from time to time among the historical guys and I'm 22.
Just don't let it bother you. Technically, you still *are* a kid. Enjoy it. You'll have plenty of time to stop being a kid when you're older.

I'm 28 and I still get called "kid" once in a while. It's not always an insult. You're only as old as you act though. Which means I alternate between being 40, 20 and 12. On here it's usually 20, work it tends to be around 40, and 12 when I bloody well feel like it!
