Which enemy of mankind would you be most terrified of on seeing them pull up by your planet assuming you're a citizen of the Imperium? What would you do if this foe did show up?

Knowing what I know: deamons.

With tyranids, you know your screwed in this life.
With deamons, your screwed in the next one too. And while Tyranids can produce monster, the warp will produce the stuff of nightmare right at your door step.

Dark Eldar. As you may not be killed quickly, may not be eaten, or wounded then later killed but taken away as a slave to do who knows what and have things no person should have to imagine done to you. Also having that dragged out as long as possible. (note the may not, who knows what would happen should they get hold of you. One might enjoy taking your toes, using them obscenely then eating them. The list goes on, and on, and on...)

Tyranids are a close second though.

I swear id either drink the koolaid if everyone else is doing it or pick up a lasgun, crossbow, sword, stick or whatever and fight furiously and always keep a failsafe. At least dark eldar will probably leave if the going is tough. So there is a glimmer of hope. Not that hope means much

Any of the above...

That said, demons are the manifestations of your worst nightmares made flesh. In 'reality', they wouldn't be like the models GW makes or the art they show, but your own personal hell descending from the sky to tear down your world.

DE. for obvious reasons. Only when they have extracted every last spasm of pain will they allow you an escape. However, they rarely launch all-out invasions, so there's a good chance you won't be taken.

Nids and Necrons just can't be stopped. One way or another, they will kill every last one of you. It's just a waiting game.

Of course, the real answer is Daleks.

DE. Daemons maybe, but hiding in the chapel while preying and being defended by the entire planets sisters of battle seems to give me a better chance of survival then being on a world that the DE want to invade. Note how many times in the fluff it is said that they find ghost worlds or totally abandoned ships and accredit it to Eldar 'Corsairs', that's the dark elder, and they find every single person. They always find you, then eat your eyes and all that jazz. Not fun, not fun at all.

Dark Eldar. The others only kill you. What the DE do to you is worse. Far worse.

Nids got my vote, but thinking about it, Daemons would be really really bad too.

I don't get the DE fear - not saying it'd be fun, but I know on at least one occasion they've accepted tributes, and left everyone else unharmed (for a while), and at least they can be fought off - good luck persuading the endless swarm or the infinite legions of hell to go somewhere with easier pickings.

Plus, if you've got a DE problem, then you get an Astartes strikeforce, who "see 'em off", according to every BL book ever, while if you've got Nids or Daemons, even if you survive them, you won't survive the highly likely prospect of Imperial exterminatus!

I really don't think you should pay tribute to the DE. It will just end really badly.
Deamons and Nids can be fought off just as well (and according to BL, it happens a lot more often)
If the DE raid a world, there is usually no time at all to send a strikeforce. By the time they arrive, the planet is already depopulated.
Also, Nids and Deamons only kill you. Death is not so bad compared to years of the most horrible torture imaginable.

I went with Dark Eldar, the fluff always portrays them as being the worst, but I also think any forces of Chaos would be just as bad.

I voted nids. Because it would happen slowly. Genestealers and lictors making you afraid of shadows. There would be news reports of mutilation and murders and of people torn apart. And then the fleets would arrive. Earth would choke and die, so even if I was the last alive on the planet; it would be a futile life of running and being too scared to sleep.

Deldar come quickly and leave with people. There is a chance I can be spared, or become a gladiator and at least face death like a man.

Daemons serve masters I can worship to save my own skin. There is a chance I can be spared by devoting myself to chaos.

Eldar... I'll probably die quickly - the same with necrons.

I'll become buddies with the Tau.

Orks would kinda suck...

Nids.

I'd say Dark Eldar if I thought they'd do anything more than steal a few hundred 'prime' sources of their fascination and leave.

Plenty would kill me as fast or faster than Nids, but there is just something odd about the idea of losing to just a natural creature with primal driving forces that scares me far more than Eldar and Necron.

Daemons or Tyranids.

I can hide from Dark Eldar. Necrons can be reasoned with. The others... just wouldn't be that bad.

Those two though, meh. World ending.

I think the overwhelming despair factor is what makes the tyranids so scary. Being eatin alive has to be like one of the worse deaths imaginable and with a tyranid invasion this is inevitable.

But to the topic - eh, its just matter of dying style. For DE its a maybe few years...but maybe, if you are into SM its not so bad... For me its probably Nids. You just cant proselyte to claws and biomass...
