I am new to the forums, but been playing 40k for some time now. I play Space Marines, and want to start getting into the local gaming scene. It seems that the meta has shifted away from having well rounded armies to having one or two deathstar units that do all the heavy lifting, and a few token scoring units as backup.

So here is my question: What are some viable space marine deathstar units that you have used successfully and their approximate point costs. Extra cool points if the unit uses allies.

For example:
5 Termies
1 LR
=450 pts

and
3 Cent w Grav
1 Inq with ML1
=315 pts

Neither of what you suggested are remotely death stars.

5 TH/SS Terminators in a LR crusader with MM is the best version of your suggestion and is 485 points.

Grav Centurions need so sort of invun tank. So thing like this:

Farsight, O'Vesa, Loth, CM with Shield Eternal, AA and TH, 3 Grav Centurions with Omniscope nearly 1100 points. That is a deathstar! You move 24" a turn due to gate not scattering due to Farsight are majority To and can splitfire . Also no one really wants to assault that unit with Farsight, the CM and a Riptide in there!

Cheaper death star:

Chapter Master as above (BT tactics) 10 Honour guard, 6 mauls, 4 axes, banner, Chaplain in a Landraider Redeemer with MM 845

You need to drop the bikes, otherwise the Centurions will be picked off right away.

He should drop the bike from SE CM as it does literally nothing for him. But making the other CM T5 helps him tank S8/9 Ap2 shots. Why would the bikes make the Cents get picked off any quicker?

White scars
Chapter master
Shield eternal, thunder hammer, bike, artificier armour, combi-grav.
Chapter master
Storm shield, burning blade, bike, artificier armour, combi-grav
(Allied in Iron Hands clann raukann) Chapter master
Gorgons chain, lightening claw, thunder hammer, bike, artificier armour, combi-grav
Bike squad
8 bikes, 2 grav, 1 combi-grav, powerfist, attack bike with multi-melta.
~1000pts

All the bikers are t5, 3+ with a 4+ jink. The chapter masters tank shots for the squad with their t5 2+/3++ 4w, two being eternal warrior.
Turn1 shooting involves 3 st10 ap2 large blast orbital strikes, 9 grav gun shots, 1 st 8 ap1 shot.
Turn 2 involves 15 grav shots, a st 8 ap 1 shot in melta range and best of all, some of these can be at different targets because you may have split the star in the shooting phase with the intention of going after 2, 3 or 4 different targets.
Assault - now charge up to 4 different targets. If charging the same target, you get 11 st 8 ap2 concussive attacks, 5 st 7 ap 2 at initiative attacks which may blind, 3 st 8 ap 2 attacks and 17 st 4 ap- attacks. All after 12 autohitting I10 st 4 HoW attacks.
Pretty nasty unit if not playing anyone with a D weapon.

The bikes would allow the cents to get picked off quicker because if they move they get a jink save, thus the opponent can focus fire on the cents and ignore the tanking chappys.

You can force C:SM to make a deathstar but it isn't something the codex does well.

The codex is really, REALLY good at running flexible deathstar counters though. Pods with sternguard or 2+ pods of well equipped tacticals can be used to get around many deathstars main selling point: a single model that stands in front soaking every wound and ignoring most. Whirlwinds love putting S5 blasts that largely ignore the front model onto the table. Well positioned and guarded vindicators love deathstars. A variety of units, well played, can carry the day against a deathstar, and C:SM excels at putting a variety of survivable units on the table.

Riddle me this: what has four sides, moves twelve inches, and moved fourteen?
