How viable is an all kroot army (80-90%) with tau nowadays? I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere but I'm having a had time finding a straight answer.

Massed sniper kroot with 2 counts as kroot leader etherals would be an extremely effective army. You could then make battlesuit counts as with krootox and equip with weapons, even a riptide counts as would work.

Vespid can count as jump kroot easily, but you would need to find something to count as kroot markerlights. Otherwise it's very powerful.

If you were willing to splash some riptides or broadsides I could see it being rather powerful with ethereal storms of fire.

Isn't there a codex out for an all kroot army,,,might have been via WB,,,I can remember it had options to make jump/winged kroot and what not and heavy support options and the like.

That was the Kroot Mercs, back in 3rd/4th edition when Kroot were much more close combat oriented. Their codes was first in White Dwarf, and then in a Chapter Approved annual. They were actually quite a good army- I have one. You could pick an army-wide ability from several to represent which evolutionary adaptations they were getting because of the battlezones they fought in. Imagine things like +1 toughness to all Kroot models in the army, and then you had the fact that Kroot used to roll huge amounts of dice in close combat. It was an extremely fluffy army with a lot of cool units....

But they would do absolutely nothing against all the years of codex creep, superheavies and flyers in 6th edition.

An all-Kroot army is not viable at all. You'll have decent shooting against infantry and a horde of scoring bodies, but you won't have any chance of dealing with vehicles. Your best option is to convert some counts-as Riptides/Broadsides/crisis suits using Kroot-themed models. For example, use a converted great Knarloc (the Kroot MC) with some extra gun bits as a "Riptide", or some of the Kroot cavalry as "crisis suits".

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Tragically....no.

(for most of the reasons posted - not without a lot of counts as).

I was hoping they would be, maybe with the fw kroot units, but tragically they are just terrible (I wish there was some consistency in fw rules.....sigh).

If they had access to krak or emp grenades, then maybe they could deal with armor...but as it stands....tragically no.

It's too bad really. Because if you play games with the 4th edition ruleset, a Kroot Merc army is pretty cool on the table. HQ that can get psychic powers, infiltrating elites, sniper cavalry, a metric buttload of dice in close combat, jump troops, etc.

Agreed.

I am hoping a kroot supplement or allies book will bring this back....or AT LEAST the kroot units in the IA3 book will one day get an upgrade (although, tragically, they just did).
