I just finished an old dust tactics walker that I had lying around and would like to get some feedback on it. It´s the first time I have used a airbrush for something else than basecoating.
I must say that it came out a lot better than expected, but I would still like to get some constructive feedback (as there is always something to improve).
Front, the decals are from a 1:48 scale german tank, this was also a first for me, never really used decals before.
Side, tried to make the ends of the barrels covered in soot, went maybe a bit overboard there
A close-up of the leg detail, I tried to make the "moving parts" suitably greasy and the feet a bit dusty.
backside, I added some wear and tear to the chassis hooks and around the hatch.

The overall colors for Afrika Korps seems a bit dark. I also think for the camo effect that you were going for that masking would have produced cleaner results.

Yes, the overall dark hue comes from using a oil glaze/filter over the whole model, it would have been a better idea to have gone over the upper half of the model with a lighter wash. Thank you for your feedback.
Thanks Devoted of Slaanesh!

I like it mate , nice job for a first go with an airbrush !
You can do alot more with a bit of practise, like use some light shades of the base colour on the edges of armour plates etc to add depth. Check out "Colour Modulation" on YouTube.
Ref the Camouflage stripes . I personally wouldn't use masking as you loose that authentic "sprayed on" look that real camo has, if you're using a fairly fine needle just use slightly less air / lower pressure and maybe go a bit closer to the work and the lines will have a harder edge.
Practise on a cardboard box and scrap models first !
Keep it up !

Yeah I should just invest in an better airbrush first (using a 30€ Chinese no-name airbrush atm), it´s not really possible to get a fine line with this one. Thanks for your feedback!

The "going closer with less air " trick usually works , if not you maybe should get a better airbrush !!!
Good "Western" made airbrushes can be very expensive , have a good look around before you decide and be honest with yourself what you really need , professional illustrator brushes will cripple your wallet but you'll not notice any difference when painting large vehicles for example !

I disagree with the masking statement. I think it looks great like this.

It probably comes down to inexperience but I can´t seem to achieve a thin line with any precision. I have been thinking about getting a Badger 150, it seems to do everything I need it to do without me spending a lot of money.

I think the necessity of masking depends a bit on the skill of the painter. Thank you for your comment.

I think you have done well on this model for a first attempt at airbrushing.
The pose gets me a bit as the guns seem to be in an artillery firing position but this is to my personal taste.
I would agree that it is a bit dark for a desert theme/afrika corps scheme, but as you mentioned this came about from your glazing. I have had the same happen to me on some speeders I weathered with artists oils.
Since then I have adopted the use of future floor polish (longlife in AUS) as a medium for cleaning up "glazes". I spray a clear coat of polish to seal the model and then apply the weathering oils. Once the oils are dry I can clean up excess from flat areas with white spirit and cotton tip, leaving detail in the recesses etc that was lost from airbrushing.
Also if you want to lighten a darker model you should look at a pin wash or similar to help overall lighten the model, to give a sun faded look.
Also if you want a clearer defined camo line but still want a soft edge to represent a scale spray-gun application try using a line of blu tac rolled into a snake and then used to mask the camo area. You can then, depending on the angle of spray define an area of camo but the paint will fall in a graduated way giving the desired soft edge.

Gosh that's a nice Ludwig you got there! Great camo scheme and the colors might be a little darker than DAK but look really good on there own. Good job washing in the details. Only small nitpick is it looks like metal paint dry brushed onto the gun armor and magazine. I would have gone with chipped metal look if possible. The decals look good and are almost necessary on this type and scale of model I think.

I would love to but there are not any more to show at the moment, still waiting for a late christmas gift containing one of the new Dust starter sets.
