Hey guys I'm looking at starting a Zulu war diorama, and have been debating the rorkes drift box, but wondered if it came with rules ready to play or do I need to buy the separate rule book. As far as I can see from the contents list it doesn't, but wanted to be sure

I can't say for sure but it seems that it doesn't, as you say it doesn't have a rulebook listed in the contents whereas comparable box sets from Warlord (Conquest of Gaul, Assault on Normandy etc.) do.
It also doesn't show up in the Rules and Books section of their website whereas the others do.

Might be to do with the fact that they'd have to put in both the core rules and the Anglo-Zulu War supplement.

Had a quick look at some reviews and it seems that there are no rules included. Although, these aren't that expensive to pick up.

Still looks like an absolutely cracking set though.. it's almost been an 'impulse' buy for me on a couple of occasions, but I've been put off a couple of times by the feeling of guilt as I seriously contemplated it..

The problem is though that, not having much willpower, it only takes a single moment of weakness..

Have to agree, it looks like a great box set. Shame it doesn't come with the rules though.

It's more of a "Scenario" set (like Pegasus Bridge for Bolt Action) so therefore doesn't come with the rulebook.

I have the set and it does not come with either the BP rulebook or the Zulu rulebook expansion.

It is a gorgeous set. I have it and have painted up most of the terrain minus the buildings, and paid a pro to paint the figures for me:

There are plenty of decent rule sets out there for the Anglo Zulu wars.

The Zulu! book is very recent release, released a week or two (IIRC) ago as of typing this post.

Those minis look brilliant CptJake. Have you had a chance to play with the official rules yet?

Thanks. I have well over 100 Zulus painted as the various regiments present at Rorkes Drift (which of course are also of use in other battles), a decent set of British defenders, and a set of Empress Naval Infantry all painted up. I've used Warlord/Empress figures augmented with Black Tree Design, who have had a 50% off sale the last few Christmases which helped swell my ranks fo Zulu warriors and gave me some characters for the Brits and some African animals.

I don't own Black Powder, though I may pick up the Zulu supplement just to see how they set up the various scenarios.

I used a lot of wargames factory zulus to fill out the ranks of my Zulu army. Very cheap

I had forgotten, I did use some Wargames Factory Zulus as well. In fact I think I still have a couple sprues of them unbuilt.

Are there any companies that look out of place amongst the others?
They all look similar enough and I'd have no real issue with variety as long as there wasn't anything to different in model styles

I'll try to get mine out this week and snap some pictures. In my opinion, there are no issues with the variety I have once painted and based.

LOL I know, I pre-ordered it direct from Warlord.

@Jake: Your terrain looks superb. How would you rate the state of the models out of the box? Mine were of ... rough quality, I'd say. They need a good amount of work before I can even think of painting them.

Thanks. I am very happy with how it came out, especially considering the very easy and quick methods I used.

Everything of mine you see painted was washed in dish soap, then primed. Well except the laser cut wood wagon, it got assembled and painted. No other work on them at all before painting. I thought it all was great. All my castings were super clean and the few bubbles that were there (mostly on the stone walls) I just left.

I was all about the very fast prep and paint on them. I obviously added some static grass type stuff and the expended rifle shells (made of lengths of fishing line cut into tiny pieces) but other than that added nothing to the terrain.

As for the figures themselves, though again, I did get them painted, I did the assembly. Not a lot of mold lines, and the Tamiya liquid plastic glue worked great on them. They assembled well, no real fit issues for the most part, though some of the shield arms make use of some of the weapon arms difficult. The Brits went together easily. I was very happy with the quality of the plastic figures. The metal figures were well cast too, no real issues with them.
