So I saw a Sherlock post on my FB feed, and it got me thinking:
There have actually been quite a large number of the "same" character played by multiple people
From the Joker, being voiced by Mark Hamill, and played by Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger.
Then you got the host of guys who played Batman, and Superman, Sherlock, The Doctor, etc.
Of all the characters who have been played by multiple people which is your favorite portrayal of that character? And how cool do you think it would/could be to combine those "best" portrayals into a single movie or TV show?
Fletcher Christian: Mel Gibson
Hamlet: Lawrence Olivier
Penguin: Dick Cheney, or alternatively Burgess Meredith

You missed DiMaggio playing the Joker! Anyway, he was awesome. Also Nathan Fillion playing Hal Jordan and Steve Trevor. Man rocks. Ok, so they're all animated...big deal. Haha.
Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Sherlock: Cumberbatch, with Robert Downey Jr a close second and an honourable mention to Michael Caine's spoof version.
Moriarty: Andrew Scott
Watson: Martin Freeman
The new Sherlock genuinely has one of the best casts ever assembled on TV.
Batman: Christian Bale. Honourable mention to Adam West for nostalgia and comedy
The Joker: Ledger
Superman: Henry Cavill
Othello: Adrian Lester
Iago: Ian Mckellan
Bond: It's a tie between Craig, Dalton, Brosnan and Connery, I really couldn't pick.
The Doctor: Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, Baker I, Davison, Baker II, McCoy, McGann, Hurt, Ecclestone, Tennant, Smith, Capaldi. Oops, I seem to have missed the point here, haven't I?
Kirk, Spock et al: What do you mean there was another version? Nonsense, I tell you, nonsense.
Kirk, Spock et al: What do you mean there was another version? Nonsense, I tell you, nonsense.
I agree with you on Ledger's Joker being best... But, I think I have to say, I prefer the Chris Pine version of Kirk better than Shatner. Although, I cannot say I prefer the Quinto Spock over Nimoy Spock.... I'll call them a tie. And bones... Well, bones is bones, and I like him either way. Same with Scottie. I think that Simon Pegg was the absolute BEST choice for the reboot. But, I DEFINITELY prefer Takei's Sulu over the new guy.
Merlin: Sam Neill (Best one ever, clever and awesome)
I'm going to have to disagree with you there.
Nicol Williamson, is by far the best Merlin, from the film Excalibur.

Well, I recently re-watched DREDD, and I think overall Urban beats Stallone - I liked the goofy Stallone version, but I think the newer one fits the dark feel of the character better.
Still, Urban's "I am the law!" could have (should have) been bigger, for me. I mean, that's a catchphrase that needs to be roared, not growled.

He was poorly written (i.e., whiny as hell) but I still like Tom Welling as Superman. I don't really like any of the other superhero characters on that show, although it was interesting to see that they handled Aquaman and the Wonder Twins in a non-pervo way.
I like Stephen Amell's Watchmen-esque take on Green Arrow although I don't really care for him him as an actor. He's really stiff given the character he's supposed to be playing. I mean strapped in a neck brace stiff, if you know what I mean. Still the best superhero show on TV, though.
Heath Ledger's Joker was inspired and I wish he could have done more. I liked Christian Bale the best as Batman but I still don't think he was the perfect fit. Liam Neeson is a great actor but a bad choice as Ra's Al Ghul, imo. Why the hell can't Hollywood cast actors of the appropriate ethnicity for roles like these? It would just "feel" better.
They say Halle Berry looked goofy in that suit but I don't think she looked any sillier than the other Catwoman actresses. She certainly brought the sexy to her character. Too bad it wasn't really Catwoman she was playing, though. All other Catwoman versions were tepid to awful, including the Anne Hathaway version.
Michael Shannon's Zod was nothing short of amazing. He totally slapped Terence Stamp's face and called him "Suzie". Too bad he was the only actor in that film given any material to work with.
I like Edward Norton's Banner the best and could go with either his Hulk or Bana's. Just not Mark Ruffalo in either roll. I don't mind his acting but he is so completely wrong for the character. I mean, it really is on the level of "Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl" wrong.
Chris Evans is a great Captain America and I liked him as the Human Torch, too. Chris Hemsworth nails Thor. Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner were both bad choices for the Black Widow and Hawkeye.
And I've more but this is what came to me for the moment.
Oh, Carl Urban absoltely nailed it with Judge Dredd. Just saying.

For Holmes the best for me will always be Jeremy Brett though Cumberbatch comes in an honorable second.
Joker - Mark Hamill.
Batman – Kevin Conroy. When I read a Batman comic it’s always in his voice.
Catwoman – Michelle Pfeiffer. I liked Hathaway though Pfeiffer’s portrayal had a profound effect on the 13 year old me who saw it at the cinema. Mmmmm.
Hulk – Mark Ruffalo.
Spidey – Toby Maguire.
Superman – I suppose it’s got to be Reeve though I must admit that I liked Routh’s portrayal of the character even if the film wasn’t up to scratch. I’m undecided on Cavill.
Bond – Connery easily, though I’m a fan of Craig, Brosnan and Dalton.
Dredd – Urban. The only criticism was that he looked a little too young also I’m not convinced that Dredd would have a 4 day beard. I always imagined he would clean shaven each morning as a matter of principle.
Also are we talking about multiple portrayals of fictional characters of can different portrayals of historical figures also be included?

YES!
Lonely is the way of the necromancer.
I love that characterisation, more wisdom, less fireballs.
Merlin is 'low level', always was, but Arthurian myth is a low magic setting and Merlin plays his hand well. His power is in his personal mystique and that comes across so well with Nicol Williamson's acting and dialogue.

He shaves each morning, but he is such a man that by the time he finished breakfast his 5 o'clock shadow is already there.

What about that dude from the 40s who was mysteriously killed?
Hitler?
LOL, I meant the guy who played Superman back in the 40s. IIRC it's one of the greatest unsolved murders in America, or something like that.
For Sherlock Holmes, I am very torn between the Robert Downey Jr. version, and the Benedict Cumberbatch version. Ultimately they play the character in much the same way, just in different time periods, and each way is closer to the source material that I have previously seen.
I also like Edward Norton best as Hulk/Banner, as the other guys who played it may have done the part, but I dont think they "fit" the way Norton did.
I think, having mentioned Hitler, the guys who play him in Inglorious Basterds, and Valkyrie both do an excellent job with what can probably be one of the worst, or most difficult parts to play.
I always like Eartha Kitt as Catwoman .... just the voice I guess.
... although Julie Newmar had her moments as well.
Michael Praed is Robin Hood for me -- although I do have immense affection for Sean Connery's portrayal too ( his son's performance whilst enjoyable enough just wasn't quite as good for me)

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.
