Ha! During my senior year of college, my neighbors in the apartment across the hall were Indian and cooked a lot. The smell didn't get into my room (much), but the concentration in the hallway was STRONG. REALLY STRONG. Anyone visiting me commented on it being VERY STRONG. And that was just the amount that was leaking through the crack under the door. I couldn't get my head around what the concentration must be INSIDE the apartment.

Regarding authenticity, spice quality, etc...it's not that. It's just a different strokes for different folks thing. My wife is Korean...we eat plenty of spicy food of all different varieties. Neither of us are crazy about Indian food. *shrug* It's obviously a great and popular cuisine, it's just not for me I guess.

This is why you need to have air moving through the apartment. Incense and bleach the carpets.

Back when we were house-hunting, my wife and I looked at a house owned by an Indian family that had what I can only describe as some kind of industrial venting system and ductwork over the stove. It wasn't the normal heavy-duty vent, etc. you see sometimes in the professional-style kitchens...this was a level beyond that.

It was kind of an eyesore in what was otherwise a very nice home. But you know, that house didn't smell of curry. So kudos to them.
