Subject: Any Decent Alternative Rulesystems For 40K?

Been increasingly disappointed with the 40K rulesystem, even more so with Escalation and Stronghold being made 'core' rather than optional.
Did see a suggestion for using a generic system a while back, but not sure where. So I've decided to ask the Dakka collective if there is any good rulesystems out there that I can use my 40K models with?
Please bear in mind that this is not intended to be a discussion on 6th Edition 40K, rather a request for what other alternatives there are out there.

Mantic's Warpath is a great alternative. It's still a bit WIP but the 2.0 edition plays solidly enough. It's very fast and interactive once you have got the hang of it, there are fan-lists for almost all the 40k armies (and direct analogues for some), and best of all, it's completely free on the Mantic site.

Cheers, I'll take a look.

Stargrunt is always worth a look. a totally different take on squad level combat where the most important thing is morale.

Suppression works in that game.
If your morale is low, you tend to stay suppressed and can't activate.
My 40k figures worked fine with it - it may have its own lines of figures in 15mm/25mm but it works fine with other ranges, too.
There aren't points costs and it's very much a "this feels right" when it comes to converting other games' armies to it.

God yes. 2 squads can pound away at each other turn after turn and not do terribly much then all of a sudden one will take casualty (lying screaming next to his mates) and suddenly they are totally combat ineffective and retreating. It can be a bit harrowing to play but its really interesting. Also when trying to charge into combat the charging unit has to take the leadership test because leaving cover and running at an emplaced enemy is an inherently scary thing to do

Combat Cards/Fantasy Cards is a game that was designed to be perfectly generic in that as long as you're using the same scale of models as your opponent, it doesn't matter what you use. You then use cards to determine how you play and what you do. It's a pretty unknown game, but I have to plug it because I'm pretty sure it was designed by the guy who used to own my local FLGS. Edit: Of course, the downside is, you kind of have to print your own cards, because I don't think the game ever took off enough to justify printing up physical sets. Essentially, every time you buy something, you're buying a PDF of the cards in the set, and you have to print them out yourself. Still, it's a neat sort of cross between a trading card game and a tabletop wargame, and you play it only using models that you already have, no need to buy anything but the cards.
