Finally got to play a game the other day...

Gameplay was fun, no wretched "all ones" to ruin it, no big rules meltdowns. But the whole damn game it seemed like an uphill battle! Every single move was accompanied by anecdotal quotes and advice (most of it bad) and a constant low hum that was later discovered to be rules reminders...

"Back in 5th we used Rhinos for that, loves me some Rhinos"

"That's not a powerfist, it's a dreadnought close combat weapon."

"I'm using these because I know your army"

"All GW tourney are Total Annihilation now, you don't get to roll for scenario"

"The only way to use that unit you've got is this way"

"Can't fire blast weapons as snap shots hey"

"Remember, I have X special thing"

"I always tell people what to do so they can be better players, eventually"

"You have to make X test now and if you fail this will happen"

And on and on and on...

At one point someone said "I think I'll use my tank to smash that unit over there!" to which the reply was "Only a Monstrous Creature can do a smash attack, not tanks."
Well gee! WE KNOW!!!!! He was simply using the word, not talking about using the rule!

I mean what the hell, why can't people just roll the damned dice and have fun? Why is everything a lay-it-on-the-table contest? SO WHAT if you know all the rules and have six armies? Can't we just play this game designed for children ages 12 and up?

That has little to do with 40k and a lot to do with your opponent. Cool story though.

I agree Pretre.

This says more about the person you were playing with then the actual game. But for some reason I never get tired of the stories of someone complaining about some neckbeard...

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

I agree, went to a tournament not 2 weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised. Even the TauDar WAAC players were genuinely friendly and fun to play against (there was no sportsmanship award either, so we can conclude they weren't just acting). First game I was damn near tabled, second game I tied, third game I made a comeback and in turn nearly tabled someone. And through it all, even when I won a crushing victory, my opponents were smiling and sportsmanlike. We even got a few good laughs in the second game. TL;DR 40k is not bad, 40k players are not bad, even WAAC gak is not bad... Your mileage will come entirely from your current opponent.

Yeah, I manage to have a perfectly good time playing a messed up game with other reasonable players without any big issues.

"So what do you do in this spare time?"
"Oh play this really cool game called 40k, it's basically moving little plastic guys around and making shooting... Never mind."

The guys at my FLGS (all of whom play) like to refer to this particular little hobby as War-Dollies.

There was even one point where I said something along the lines of how my Iron Hands were gonna do me proud and the response that was:

"You're not Iron Hands. That's some Chapter you made up and you're just using Iron Hands Tactics."

Like, really man? Even gotta nitpick the fluff? Which by the way they're Sons of Medusa, an Iron Hands Successor Chapter that got exiled from their homeworld for not believing in quite the right propaganda... hey wait a minute!

I'm to my gaming group what the Sons of Medusa were to the Iron Hands!

Upstart newcomers who don't quite mesh with the established authority, damn that sure sounds like me!

Thanks Dakka I just found my true 40k faction!!

Which by the way, and I think this may wrap this thread up nicely...

I don't give a damn about GW, their crap rules, their extortionist prices, hot models, limited edition books, Digital Release and spam in a box armies. I don't care about Forgeworld or their shoddy resin and their wacky unit rules or whether or not they're allowed. I don't care. I don't.

I love Warhammer 40000 and if you want to try to spoil that for me, or impose your own vision of it onto mine, then you can go suck a lemon.

I agree. take carefull note of what they are saying so you can sift the trashtalk from any actual useful reminders and tips.
This may also help you decide whether or nt to play that person again.

Shameless bump! I'm a bit of a forum junky...

Looks like I also have to start not caring about 40k going out of business too! Lol, losing money and fans at the same time is awful and usually tolls the death knell for a company.

But we won't let that happen. If GW can't keep their game running we will. Dakkahammer?

Wait if you say you don't care about gw etc etc then in turn you don't care about 40k....im just saying basic logic dictates that if you don't care about gw then you also don't care about 40k because gw created and produces that game you like so much

As for the other shtuff.... The guy you were playing was just being a turd burglar... You don't want to turn into a turd burglar yourself. If you really want to play with someone like that you have to play BEERHHAMMER... It makes it so much more fun... Hizzah!!

I do a lot of rules correction in my games, but only when my opponents actually break the rules. I played a game against a guard player last week, and I won, but he tried to cheat his ass off. I can't prove anything, but about a dozen times he picked up missed shots to roll wounds with, until I reminded him. (incidentally, he only ever did that with plasma, never his lasguns. Hmmm.)
He also tried to convince me that his commisar had Eternal Warrior, tried to take cover saves against ignores cover weapons, and tried to take cover when he had none.
Then he got upset with me for joking about rolling to see if the game ended, after I wiped him.

One thing I won't do, though, is take obvious jokes and correct them. I have no problem with rules corrections, (I encourage them, seeing as I've never met anyone who knew them perfectly, including myself,) but you've got to understand hyperbole and sarcasm.
