It's been a long time since I've played, historically a user of Dark Angels. Back in 5th ed i wanted to put forth a triple wing army, really wanted to deep strike some CCW death wing termies via ravening homers with long range support provided by scout snipers and whirlwinds.
I went about purchasing that list but never assembled it all let alone put in on the tabletop -life got in the way. In total I had collected: Sammael, old Asmodai, 2 ravening battle forces, 2 other land speeders, 1 whirlwind, two sniper scout squads of five, 3x CC termy squads (Each 2THSS, 3 x LC) land raider and a land raider crusader.
Now Im trying to resurrect that force into something competitive keeping in mind all the sixth ed rule changes.
Here it is:
Iron Hands
HQ:
Master of the Forge on bike, 110
Elites:
LOTD x 10, 250
Troops:
Sniper scouts x 10, 120
HS
Land raider crusader (Empty!), 250
Whirlwinds x 2, 130
Ravenwing
HQ
Librarian on bike, 85
Command squad of black knights (3) with standard of devastation, 180
Troops:
2 x ravenwing attack squadrons with 6 bikes, attack bike with MM and land speeder typhoon with multimelta. 582
Total: 1707.
Basically I have thought up a very different, gun line army, structurally based around the Std of Devastation. And no termies.
Iron hands form the primary deployment with MOTF leading, with 2x5man/1x10man Legion of the Damned (who will all be converted DA vets)(?any problem with this?) and an allied Ravenwing force.
The HQ choice for the ravenwing force is a librarian with Divination.
I'm planning to surround the Std of Devastation with ten LOTD out front with a land raider crusader (but not inside), providing cover for the Ravenwing command unit holding the banner, and two full RAS on either side; who stay put until they have to peel off and secure objectives late in the game. Correct me if I am wrong, but in a tight formation thats 120 bolter shots even with movement, all re-rolling to hit and 40 of which ignore cover due to the flaming projectiles rule.
Again whirlwinds and sniper scouts provide cover fire from far corners.
The other ploy would be to outflank the enemy with the ravenwing troops then deep strike the LOTD close to the Banner and objectives to provide fourfold cover ignoring bolter fire to uproot them from secured positions.
There are some holes, there is no anti flyer here and the force would be below par in close combat.

Hey buddy! Took a look, the idea is nice, not sure how it would work.
First things first, ravenwing attack squadrons cannot be troops choices in allied detachment. It sucks major balls, but that's why ravenwing is my primary - because there is no way around it, Secondly, to get them as troops you have to take either sammael or Azreal. These 2 HQ's are the only ones that unlock ravenwing as troops choices!
All is not lost though, we can make this work! You need to swap the iron hands to allied detachment, and move the heavy choices to the dark angels, drop the meltas from the speeders, you need to keep those guys as far away as possible. Then we jus need to work out how to work Sammy in so that bikes are troops. Why do you want div on the Libby? Considering the majority of your army is twin linked anyway, prescience seems kinda pointless? Let me know what you think, we can make this work with some shuffling!

Hey mate thanks for pointing that out!
Just trying to work out what to keep and what to lose.
Will take that land speeder advice on board, cheers - maybe typhoon + HB will make it more survivable.
I'd prefer Sammael to azrael

Do you think it'll still be useful to run a librarian with Div to follow the LOTD squad? Maybe it's an expensive buff.
how many units can you have as an allied contingent? 1hq, 1 troops and only one of anything else?
And whats your view on land speeder squads?

Allied detachments are 1 hq, 1 elite, 2 troops, 1 fast attack and 1 heavy support.
I run sammael, the problem is it specifies the Ravenwing squads only become troops if he is in your primary detachment (not allied, it doesn't work then!)
The Libby's a nice idea with LoTD, the issue is that they have to deep strike, and he can't, so you're never guaranteed that they'll be near each other!
Personally, I can't get land speeders to work for me. I'm not saying they are bad in general, I've heard a lot of success stories, but for me they're crap. Once in a very blue moon they perform well. And when they do they're awesome, but it's so rare. Personally I just think they're too fragile. Take a heavy bolter attack bike and a heavy bolter speeder. The speeder is 5 points more. Then take a Lascannon hit. 2's wound the attack bike. He has another wound. 2's penetrate a speeder, he could now be wrecked/blown up. And their cover saves are the same. Like I said, it's personal experience and preference. I just don't rate them.

Forget ravenwing attack squads as allies. They work well on mass as troops or not at all.
As an ally providing bikes, DA are best used to provided Ravenwing command squads and black knights.
You ally contingent could look something like this:
HQ
Librarian - Bike, PFG
Ravenwing Command Squad - 5 bikes (check FAQ if you haven't already) Ravenwing standard (possibly apothecary)
TROOPS
Scouts - Snipers
FAST ATTACK
Black knights x 5/6

The landraider should also be taken as from DA, as it will then benefit from the standard.
Iron hands and LOTD would make better allies.
