So, I'm trying to decide how I'd like to paint my marines.I've always loved the iconic look of the ultramarines.

Although, salamanders are fun too. So my question is this.

If I say, painted all my marines in ultramarines colors, and painted some, like melta flamer guys
In salamanders and ran them in the same squad, would people freak out over that?

In my head, it would be something like ultramarines came to reinforce an ongoing battle between salamanders
And some random enemy. The salamanders numbers are dwindling and it looks bleak for them. But the ultramarines
Come just at the right time to back them up. Would that be reasonable enough to explain why in my head they would
Be fighting together?

Overwhelm the enemy with an unrelenting onslaught of the hive mind.

Sure, paint your man-dolls as you like! Just use the same rules and CT.

I'd be fine with it. As long as you made it clear which chapter tactic (singular) you are using.

Oh, I wouldn't be doing it in an attempt to use multiple chapter tactics. Just for forging that narrative!

Yea, I find the fights more interesting when the armies have a little unique narrative to them.

As long as the rules are clear with your opponent, it should be OK.

One thing to consider is that you can ally within the codex, with different chapter tactics. So you could have squads of Salamanders fighting shoulder to shoulder with Ultramarines, each using their own chapter tactics. As long as everything fits on the FOC, you are good to go.

Would it be possible to have ultra marines as a main army and some salamanders as allies? Or are they the same codex.

As Nevelon just mentioned, yes. You can do exactly that!

Not only would that be fine, I think it's great that people give that kind of tought to their armies!

You could have a small Salamander force as allies and then do an UM Drop Pod strike to rescue them or something. Anyway, it's legal as long as you opponent knows what you play

Yeah, while you're at it, since the salamanders are an allied detachment, why not get a 4th Thunderfire cannon if you already are running 3.

Please, whatever you do take the following advice: Paint them however you want.

Seriously. It's really not that important. What IS important is that they have the right wargear for what you are doing and that you are upfront with what chapter tactics you are using.

If you want to have Salamander looking dudes embedded in Ultramarine units then fine. It would be trivial to say that your flamer guys were on loan to the ultramarines as a cross training type of thing.
