Am I the only one who gets annoyed at when people mention Slaanesh the only responses and sexual or cocaine related? Slaanesh is also about vanity, wealth, and lovecraftian monsters! I mean just - sorry a bit of rage there... But seriously whats with the mono focus on the broadest of all chaos gods?

My guess? Breasts and claws. Maybe a tentacle or two if you're a fa/tg/uy.

Anyways, I must start with this. Have you ever heard the name Failbaddon? A term that was made through a combination of a terrible model and a "supposed" 12 "failures" before finally succeeding? Is it irritating? Honestly it is but that's just how it goes.

Lust, greed, vanity, excess, pain, pleasure, perfection, and headonism. Honestly, I think it is partially maybe to do with the difficulty in capturing Slaanesh. Also keep in mind that in RT and the earlier eras Noise Marines were guitarrists and DOOM RIDER was all about them drugs . Anyways, it is more of a staying joke that brandies around. Grating at times but it happens. I wouldn't really say the broadest god per say, but I can concur I do get tired of the sex god jokes where people blabber about that.

Of all the four gods, Slaanesh's positive qualities seem to come up the least often in the fluff for some stupid reason. Most writers in general (not just Warhammer) have trouble writing "refined cultured etc" characters, I guess, so writing a chaos version of it must be even harder.

That and of the four gods, Slaanesh's portfolio tends to shy away from war the most, I suppose (there's a reason why Khorne is the opposite). Art, good cuisine, refined tastes and music, and even striving for perfection in whatever way (training, exercising, making sure you eat the right foods so your body is in tip top shape... not that the writers ever seem to touch on any of those as a part of Slaanesh) are all things that take place off the battlefield for the most part. So at best they're usually just footnotes done in horrifying manners (cannibalism, using flayed skins and feces for paintings, etc) most of the time.

Slaanesh also has the narrative misfortune of having the Eldar (Craft, Dark, AND Harlequins) basically take up a lot of the portfolio. A really good complex portrayal of a Slaaneshi character/group instead of the 2-dimensional "COOCAAAAINE ROCK MUSIC SEX!" character would basically be a CW Eldar (positive portrayal) or a Dark Eldar (Negative portrayal), or sometimes a Harlequin (more neutral portrayal), which might be another reason why writers don't bother with anything beyond the simplistic drugs/sex/noise portrayal.

Because I am really not sure if it is male or female half the time anymore.

I always thought Slaanesh should be the strongest Chaos god since really all the other Chaos Gods are just excess of one specific thing and since Slaanesh is the god of excess, all the other god's activities should feed him/her/them/it.

So I feel ya man.

It's probably because Slaanesh was birthed into existence by extreme acts of hedonism and wanton sexual acts? I mean, that is kind of part of the fluff.

Also, this is a hobby dominated by men. DOMINATED. We're all a little immature whether we want to admit it or not.

IIRC, I think it's noted somewhere that while Slaanesh is the weakest god of Chaos, it's also the fastest growing one.

Abrahamic Satan/Lucifer when serious, Jenna Rachels when I'm anything but serious.

While the common outlook on everything Slaaneshi is sex, drugs and rock'n'roll, you're free to interpret things your own way.

For instance, my Children of Torment warband. Sure, they keep pretty ladies as slaves, there's more drugs in their blood vessels than actual blood and the din of battle is music to their malformed ears. However, they're also proud, lethal warriors who employ efficient combat tactics and relentlessly pursue their goals to prove their "perfection".

Imagine the surprise of the Space Marines confronting what they think will be a band of raving maniacs, only to discover that they're facing a band of raving maniacs who operate in organised squads, use cover, ambushes, outflanking, surgical strikes and heavy support.

Interestingly enough GW's Slaanesh is all about senses and artistic excess and none of the sexual excess, whereas for the internet it's the exact opposite.

You also had Lucius and his Perfection.

So you had Drugs (Doom Rider), Pleasure from Sound (Noise Marines), and Perfection of Skill (Lucius).

Perfection of Skill would also matter towards Fabius Bile, but he no longer follows any one god.
