Hello and welcome to my first battle report. This is my first shot at this, so please excuse me if this thread does not look... pretty. Without further a due lets get started.
Premise:
A few weeks ago I got a match versus a player that I had played once before. The fist time, I took the game due to a deep strike mishap on my opponents part. This time he came back, seeking redemption. As we got out our models, I realized that he was pulling out some new, more powerful models then what he had played with before. He meant business. I also pulled out a different variation of a Tau army than what I had used the first time against him, this one was also more powerful too. This time, I wanted to bring my Farsight Bomb that included, Farsight, Shadowsun, and Sevrin Loth (FW). If you are unfamiliar with Loth, I will explain what he does in a little bit, so check below. My army is to do as much damage and destruction as possible before going down. My opponent brought a list more centered around powerful individual units.
Check out the lists that we both ran. (Please note that his list is an assumption, I was not actually able to get my hands on his full list)
I would like to make a quick note that for the purposes of the FW models in this game I did put on some of the wargear that may have already been know (example: and HQ) but I did feel like it was necessary due to the fact that not everyone knows stats for FW models. This will not happen with GW models in my future reports.
Unfortunately I was not able to get any pregame thoughts from my opponent, but expect that too in my other upcoming reports.
Who Should Win?
I believe that I can take this game because...
1. The Farsight Bomb is one of the more competitive Tau builds and I feel like that alone could be too much for my opponent
2. Due to the fact that Loth lets me pick what powers I want on Biomancy, Telepathy, or Telekinesis, I am able to guarantee myself GoI. This is extremely important because when he his attached to my death star I have a huge amount of mobility. Along with Farsight being my warlord, the unit will not scatter when it DS.
3. I have two major things (Farsight Bomb, Riptide) that my opponent will have to deal with, which makes it so my Troop units are hopefully untouched most of the time
My Opponent Could Win Because...
1. Rob is a much more experienced player, and has been playing Tau from the very beginning. This is not going to be an easy match for me by any means.
2. I am not very familiar with the XV9s so I am going to have to go with the flow and see how dangerous they really are.
3. The Barracuda could potentially become a major problem. If my Bursttide goes down before the Barracuda.... well lets just say my Troop units are going to have a long day.
On that note, lets move on to the deployment!
The Battlefield
Spoiler:
The battlefield we are playing on has a desert theme. The pool in the bottom left corner is considered normal, not dangerous terrain.
Deployment:
Spoiler:
My Deployment:
I did make a tactical blunder here, I put Loth towards the front of the bomb. Although it doesn't really matter because the bomb deep strikes, I kept Loth in the front, I should have protected him because he is my GoI. The scouts are atop the building in the top left hand corner. The two shielded missile drones are conga lined behind the Riptide.
And the Kroot are in reserves. Please excuse the proxys on one of the Kroot Squads.
My Opponent's Deployment:
His Riptide that Shadowsun has Joined is off to the right side of the Hammerhead.
Tau Turn 1
Spoiler:
Of course this turn I forgot to take pictures . Sorry about that. I can still give you a summary on what happened. Here goes nothing...
Rob won our roll off to see who goes first. Going second I felt like I was in a better position than he was. With 6 objectives on the board, going second would let me go last, therefore letting me get "last licks". I tried to seize, but failed on a 3. Rob started off by doing some infiltrations, shuffled some models around, and then went to town on his shooting. Unfortunately for me, my tactical blunder will make a difference here. With all of his models that are in range, Rob managed to take out 2 Crisis Suits and one wound off of Loth! This was a bit of a rough start to the game for me, especially since Loth is what keeps the biggest part of my army mobile. His Fire Warriors moved around in the backfield, getting closer and closer to the near objectives. This turn Rob's target was the bomb, and luckily not my Scouts. They went untouched.
I hope that this can paint a picture in your mind of our first turn. Now on with the batrep!
Tau Turn 1
Spoiler:
My death star jumps up to the center of the board, taking up a position that can see multiple things. I know that the Riptide is going to be a problem if I can't get rid of it. It becomes my first target.
With a single turn of shooting from Farsight and Bros. I am able to take out the Riptide, Shadowsun, and the two Shielded Missile Drones . This is a great turn for me because I get Slay The Warlord and First Blood
Victory Points:
Tau + Marines 2 Tau 0
Tau Turn 2
Spoiler:
Considering I had a decent turn 1, I was eager to see what my opponent could do on his turn.
The Barracuda flies onto the board. Initially Rob put his Barracuda right behind my Bursttide, but I then kindly reminded him that I had EWO and VT on it, he then moved it all the way across the board, and out of LOS of my Riptide
His Kroot come in from the side, and are are now holding a 3 point objective!
After a full turn of shooting everything within LOS of the bomb, he manages to wipe out almost all of it! I pass morale, and stay put. This was a very bloody turn for me. Luckily, I still have my Buffsuit, Loth, and Farsight. Although a heavy toll was taken on my army this turn, I still have weapons (the Riptide) that will hopefully cause some disruption in what could turn into a blowout.
So far this battle is extremely bloody for both sides. The score remains:
Tau + Marines 2 Tau 0
Tau Turn 2
Spoiler:
As my turn begins, I want to try and rack up some points on the objectives, hopefully I can try and put this game away early!
My Kroot come in, and due to my Kroot Hound, I re-roll my table edge, and get to choose I go for the Fire Warriors hoping to take that objective. This way I also have Linebreaker. Unfortunately I'm not able to clear them out, but I put a good sized dent in the squad.
At the finish of my shooting phase I am able to wipe out the Kroot that came on the turn before, thus eliminating one of my opponents scoring units.
I'm also able to take out one of the XV9 Hazard Suits.
Tau Turn 3
Spoiler:
Before:
After:
The Fire Warriors take shots at my Kroot and quite frankly, demolish them. Luckily they don't fall back too far, so they are still in contention of the objective.
Unfortunately, the rest of the bomb is destroyed , giving Rob Slay The Warlord. Loth is the lone survivor, so he GoIs and get the heck out of dodge! Without Farsight's Warlord Trait, I had to DS into a more open area to avoid a mishap. Run Loth run!
Then, as I predicted would happen, Loth scattered away and on to terrain. Of course it was right back into the heart of the enemy too.
Overall, a successful turn for the OTHER Greater Good.
Tau Turn 3
Spoiler:
Well, this is turning into a very bloody battle. The Farsight bomb is gone, so I am going to start relying on supporting my troops so I can end with some objectives... Or I could get clobbered by Rob (not literally). We'll see how it goes...
Fortunately, my second squad of Kroot creep on the board, far away from all of the action in the middle. They are also able to take the 4 point objective! The one with the most points. My scouts still sit in the building near an objective too. They are positioned above the Kroot, but out of the shot.
Mr. Bursttide runs up the board gunning for the Hammerhead. I go to town with Smash attacks and... It explodes!
A pretty good turn for me again, but I'm sure to feel a world of hurt next turn with the way this battle is going.
If we were to total up the points right now and see the score it would be...
Tau + Marines 7 (Slay the Warlord + First Blood + Line Breaker + 4pt. Objective) Tau 4 (Slay the Warlord + 1 pt. Objective + 2pt. Objective [not pictured])
Tau Turn 4
Spoiler:
Loth tries to run away again, but this time it is to no prevail.
The Barracuda flies over my Riptide and in the direction of the Kroot! The SM Scouts are also nearby, this could be ugly for me.
The Barracuda is in range of my Kroot, and shoots at them. I catch a bit of a break here as the squad stays alive!
Tau Turn 4
Spoiler:
My turn arrives, and I have some work to do. The Barracuda is going to be a problem if it wipes out my troops, so its time to take out my opponents.
The Riptide moves behind the Sniper Drones and Commander. Hopefully I can get rid of them. And...
Unfortunately for me Rob makes all of his saves, and I do absolutely nothing!
On the plus side, my Kroot are able to get back onto the objective that the Fire Warriors were holding. The objective is now contested.
Tau Turn 5
Spoiler:
Ladies and Gentleman, its that time, Turn 5!
On this turn, Rob just shuffles around his pieces, nothing happens except one more wound goes unsaved on the Riptide.
Tau Turn 5
Spoiler:
The Bursttide gets sandwiched in between the sniper drones and Fire Warriors. I go after the Fire Warriors so I can try to get them off of the objective. I don't prevail, but I have the game, as long as it doesn't continue.
The Kroot are contesting an objective.
The other squad of Kroot are holing an objective.
The SM Scouts (proxied as GKs) are holding an objective. With the Barracuda looming overhead.
If the game was to end now, it would be:
Tau + Marines 9 Tau 4
I would win if the game stops now.
Now for the roll...
And the game continues! (Of course *sigh*)
Tau Turn 6
Spoiler:
Rob has a successful turn as the Fire Warriors and Sniper Drones topple the Riptide. (Yes there is a Fire Warrior proclaiming his victory atop the Riptide)
Nothing else happens at the objective. So far....
A lone Marine is left at the objective his unit was holding. The Barracuda withdrew and bolted over to the other side of the board after a terrible turn of shooting. Rob was attempting to support his scoring units here.
Along with terrible shooting at the Scouts, the Barracuda also failed to take out my Kroot on the 4 point objective.
And thats exactly what he does. He wipes out my two remaining Kroot that were contesting that objective. This also gives him 2 more points.
This concludes our game. With my turn coming up all I need to do is end it.

Spoiler: Tau win or draw.
Darn you. Why'd you have to give it away!
I just can't help myself!
Next I'll tell you that either one team or the other or neither got first blood.

Subject: Re:Tau vs. Tau + Space Marines 1500 Points
You must have gotten your turns confused. Reserves don't start coming in until Turn 2 (unless they're drop pods) so there was no way his Reserves could be coming in on Turn 1.
Yeah.... I think I know what has gone wrong, but I can't fix it until I get home. If you give me a day, I can have it up by this afternoon. Sorry for the inconvenience.
No, my account crashed, so I'm going to have to make a new one, and re-upload the photos. I should have time this week, but it will require some time.
jy2,
So I played a final game with William yesterday, it was awesome. We did a 2 vs. 2 2k match against some new players. We played Tau + Inquisition + Marines, and they played Tau. It was a really bloody game. I won 10-1 and almost swept them on turn 5. Sadly I forgot to do a batrep, but it was really awesome. I also acquired the rulebook so I know how to play the game pretty well now. Hopefully I can try out my new Tau build against your Daemons some time, try and redeem myself?
