Subject: Most Competitive Tyranid List? Also, a Tyranid Warrior Army Idea

With everyone trying to find the perfect Tyranid list (or the best one they can have in this edition with the book they are currently stuck with to be accurate), me and some friends sat down and where dicussing a number of ideas that I could do with my new Tyranids. With the book basically screaming that they should be a "Swarm" army, however a friend came up with a pretty interesting list for me to possibly try other then a swarm list and just wanted to run it by you. Basically, the list includes 2x Fly-Tyrants, but for troops, we came up w/ 3x Units of 9x Tyranid Warriors, all w/Devourers and 1x Barbed Strangler per Squad. Now granted all added up its right at 1300 points, but with list you wouldn't have to worry about a lack of Synapse, and from there you can get some nastier stuff such as Crones, Venomthorpe's, Exocrines, etc. Thoughts? OR if not what list would you prefer with the new Tyranid Book?

There is no perfect list. Much has to do with your local meta. If you dont have a quantity of S8 shooting then warriors might do well for you. Otherwise you might need to play the hide and seek Synapse game.
Tyranids still have alot of the strengths they did last edition, but they also have more weaknesses now too, so balance that out against what you think you will play with.

Not sure I'll play like this, but sure it is an interesting idea.
Your warriors aren't supporting the army but it's the other way around!
Screen them with fearless gaunts and back them with venoms. Give them Fnp (zoans) and for anything shooting str8 pin it with Horror. A Prime to suffer the str8 shots in the broods would have been nice though.

Try your list! It might work for you in your Meta. The only thing I would suggest is running the Warriors in 4 packs (maybe in groups of 4,5, or 6). Groups of 9 seem wasteful. With some gaunt support and ranged support it could be fun.

Personally I am finding that 1-3 blobs of x3 warriors are fantastic.
Add in a strangler and you have a cheap and effective synapse bubble that is also dishing out some temple pain on something like fire warriors...before they even have range to you.

I've been building warriors with the idea of starting to use them with the new codex, but i don't see them being a very competitive option still. They are still pricey and vulnerable to instant death. So i don't think they will be a main stay in competitive lists but they are still fun to take, especially in large numbers

so what troops ARE immune to ID? nothing in the marine / csm... nothingin tau, eldar, DE, or sisters... orcs... no troops unit is immune to ID, even tho there are many multi wound t4 troops units out there. - and people use them.
in a single unit of 3, yea i see warriors going down fast. anything simaler would have the same fate - but take multiple larger units, and suddenly they become a lot more powerful. i had an idea for a warrior based list, using warriors for troops, flyrant with shrike and gargoyle bodygaurds, raveners escorting a trygon... supported by a few dakka fex and some zoans. the trick is to find the right synergy point, were your forces can dish out the hurt before being taken down.

I think its more their armor save that makes them not worth their points. Its a terminator with two more wounds and a LOT worse save that fails its save 4x more often and gets to use said save much less often.

It's not really a terminator at all, a unit of 5 Warriors is almost exactly similar in survivability to that of a squad of 10 Tac Marines for nearly an identical cost...with a better gun and being fearless.
Warriors have problems sure, but being like Terminators is not one of them.

Marines, CSM, Tau, Eldar, DE, Sisters all lack T4 multi-wound models (outside of independent characters, and those are kept safe in a unit of ablative wounds). It's like you don't even understand the argument being made.
I think the vulnerability to instant death is slightly overstated, but it's still a big problem for warriors.

IT sounds like it can be effective against some lists, but with this edition being a rock-paper-sissors kind of edition, there are just as many if not more lists that would own a list like that. That being said, I currently am planning on running at the moment 1x Flyrant and 2x Squads of 30x Toxic Hormaguants, but besides that I am still debating on what else to run. But I like the idea of 2x to 3x cheap Warrior squads as they are perfect for Synapse, that or taking a Prime.
That being said, Troop wise which do you find more worth it? Hormaguants w/Toxic Sacs or Termaguant Spam?

To me Exocrines seem to be a must buy. Pie plate Str 7 AP 2 or 6 plasma shots, with assault (its no slouch in melee) AND NO GETS HOT. Furthermore, it gets BS4 if it stays still. Stick in ruins with a venomthrope for a 2+ cover save. Even without its T6 5W.
And all this for less than 200 points. Exocrines RULE.

I often run two broods of four warriors with Deathspitters and a single Venom Cannon. The Cannon has great range and decent punch as well as a blast, and the Deathspitters are Str 5. The unit can put out a surprising amount of hurt and can glance some of the more common light vehicles to death. It comes in at around 145 points and has 12 wounds and a 4+ save, nine s5 AP5 shots and a 36" str 6 blast. I tend to use them as synapse fire support and hug cover whenever I can. They do occasionally eat a krak missile, but there aren't too many models that won't get killed by one that cost only thirty five points. And Terminators can take a bolter shot and die just as quickly. It's a pretty solid unit, just enough of a threat to be worrisome but much less likely to suck up missiles than, say a Carnifex.

Tau have 2W suits, but access to invulnerable saves, on better base models.

Personally I feel that a list full of Phalanxes of Tyranid Warriors could be effective, especially because with this edition heavily geared towards an infantry spam meta there are less and less S8 weapons around these days and best of all you would not have to worry about synapse. I agree that the fact they can be insta-killed by strength 8 weapons I feel is being mentioned a little to much as not every army can really spam a large number of S8 weapons outside of IG and Riptide spam Tau, that and the fact there are tactics you can utilize to lessen the results of incoming fire such as with cover. However that being said I do think smaller broods of x4 Tyranid Warriors with Barbed Stranglers as cheap sources of Synapse for smaller bugs is a much more competitive way to go.

Something very similar occurred to me as well. Every MC is good in cc. Harpy is half built for cc with its sonic screech, and beyond that each TMC has at least 3 attacks. I'm planning on doing not much more than shooting my way into combat with all of my TMCs.

Really though it covers the staples of a good list. However, I have to say that I am just not sold on the Dakkafex. Yes, Damage output is phenomenal. But it's just not much cheaper than a Tyrannofex, and a TFex is so much tougher...
Still it's a very solid list and I like the Exocrines. I'm unsure on how many will be needed, but I love at least one. Maybe two is necessary.

I didn't like the Dakkas either...it was just slowing down what I thought should be a unit that acts like a semi-truck more than anything...2 fleeting flexes also take the pressure off exocrines.
As for the bastion...it's been very meh to me...the firestorm redoubt is where it's at.
