If you buy a building does it get coves saves from the venemtrope?

It would, except it is not a model.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

What's the exact wording on the venomthrope providing a cover save? Does it specify units, models, etc? I believe fortifications count as terrain.

The Venomthrope's Spore Cloud rule only works on models from Codex Tyranids, and Fortifications aren't from that codex.

Nor are they models they fail on both criteria.

What makes you say that? Besides it actually being a model of a building, even the base rule book uses phrases as 'As per model' in the Fortification entries on pages 115-117 for the Access Points and Fire Points. Unless you want to argue that Bastions don't have access and fire points because it's not a model?

That would be as per the physical model.
It isn't a game-defined model, as it lacks a Unit Type (a defining feature of a model).

As Grendel stated model is a defined in game term. Which requires a characteristic profile and a unit type (amongst other things). Terrain and Fortifications do not meet the criteria.

How does that work with the new Stronghold Assault rules then?
Page 15, SHA:

Fortifications that are buildings typically start the game under the control of one player, ... <snip>..
In many respects, these buildings function like any other unit in a player's army, the major difference is that they can be captured by the enemy, ...<snip>

"in many respects", not all. So only those specified

It lists only one major difference from normal units, which implies the rest the is the same?

No, "in many respects" and "the major difference" certainly does not imply that is the only difference.

It implies there are an uncounted number of minor differences then? Which we don't know.

There is a major difference. (one listed)
and
"In many respects, function like any other unit". (many respects)

In absence of an exhaustive list by GW on the differences between fortifications and normal units, which statement is stronger?

HIWPI:
Fortifications are treated as normal units, except for the differences noted (those by the fortifications rules, the buildings rules in the main rulebook, etc..)

Sounds like a model to me. The exceptions are due to it being a fort.

So what is the Fortifications unit type?

"In addition to its characteristics profile, each model will have a unit type, such as Infantry or Cavalry..." (3 BRB)

No but the edges of the venomthropes area of effect is 6" from the edge of the building he is deployed in.

It is a good way to really spread out that shrouded rule to a ton of units. And it helps to protect them.
