It seems like all I see is thread after thread after thread of "Fire the executives!", "40k has a crappy, unbalanced rule set!", "What crules would you change?", and "What were the writers smoking when they came up with the Tyranid codex?". I'm not here to complain about those threads. (I actually find them to be fairly entertaining) It just seems that the loudest voices are the negative ones, so I want to know, when was the last time you had fun playing 40k? For me, it was last Friday's game. I brought 1200 of DA and my opponent brought 1200 of Daemons. We both brought casual lists. (No Land Raider spam, no screamer star) The game was a very close game with some great moments from both sides, but my opponent outplayed me and ended up winning by a coupe points. My point is, even with all the broken rules and power-builds and expensive prices, it's still possible to have fun and just enjoy the game. I'm not saying to forget about being competitive; I'm saying that, every once in a while remember that 40k is a fun and enjoyable pastime.

I'll bite. Had the first tourney of the 2014 season at my FLGS this past weekend. 1250 points, no FW, Escalation, or Strongholds. I brought some mono-nurgle dudes with a NON flying daemon prince. Got tabled first round (against mono-nurgle deamons of all things), tabled the second guy (dark angels w/ deathwing), and got tabled again in the thrid round by a fairly nice 3-drop pod Salamanders list with Vulcan and some Legion of the Dammed. I had a blast. Not the best day of 40k ever kind of fun, but still was laughing and sharing in the hobby I love with 50+ other blokes and a girl (there was one).

Last Sunday, when I had 2 games against Tau. It was my first time up against a Riptide, another test for my Rhino-pod list and there were some awesome moments in-game, includung a Rhino that performed 3 tank-shocks in 3 turns, a grenade-happy tactical squad that scattered every time, and an podding Ironclad dread that failed to arrive until turn 5 (so much for an alpha-strike).

40k is a fun game almost all of the time, and much like LEGO Star Wars games or Top Gear,it's at its best when not taken too seriously. If you just chill out and play for the hell of it, it's a great game.

This for me too. Though nowadays I play against myself, I have more fun watching carnage unfold rather than trying to win a game.
I really don't care if the rule set is balanced or not, as long as the battle is absolute chaos.

This thread confuses me. Why would someone play if they weren't having fun?

Thinking the game could be better than it is doesn't preclude having fun playing it.

You play in a league or tournament and paid for it already . You don't like the new codex you got or errata , but because you already paid you play anyway.
There is a team tournament and your friends need a second or fourth or sixth guy .

You bought the army for full , no ebay , no interent stores , not playing the army would be a waste of the money you paid for it .

I guess what I've noticed is that a lot of people, including myself, get caught up focusing on the flaws of game that they never really stop to think about how fun the game is. This especially applies to me, because in the past, I've always tried to come up with the perfect counters and most competitive builds, which is fine, but I found that the harder tried to be competitive (for lack of a better word)and come up with counters to the most cheesy builds out there, the more I blamed the rules and developers for being unbalanced. Finally, I realized I was taking the game waaaaay too seriously and forgot why I got into the hobby in the first place. Maybe I'm the only one who's done this, but I highly doubt it as I see some of the posts on this and other forums. If I am the only one on this forum who's taken this game too seriously, I apologize for writing this thread and wasting your time.

Both times were outstanding. Love 40k.

The last time I truly enjoyed it was when my BA beat the GK. All my games with C:SM have been stress fests trying to beat tier 1 lists and miserable.

Last Saturday. TINY tournament (4 of us) at my FLGS. 1850 pts, everyone showed up with nasty lists (Taudar, WL/serpent spam eldar, Crons & Cron/Ork Air. I was crushed (got zero points), but had a wonderful time being a real PITA (from a gaming perspective... not personally) to the people who were crushing me. "It will not die." pretty much applied to my games that day. Something about having any possibility of winning removed in turn 2 just frees me intellectually to do my best gaming.

I miss being able to play lesser tier lists... so many good figures languishing on the shelves.

My last game I played was one of the best I've had in awhile. I played my friend's Guard army for a very narrow victory on turn 6. You can read about it here at http://wayofthedice.blogspot.ca/ /shamelessplug. Honestly though, I don't remember the last time I didn't have any fun playing a game of 40k.

40k Armies:
Alaitoc 9300 points
Chaos 15000 points
Speed Freeks 3850 points

Every time I play, because the only people I play with are fun and the only way I play is for the lulz. We all build semi-competitive lists (nobody ever brings spam or deathstars or any of the game-ruining bullgak) and have a blast.

In my experience, the best way to play the game is with other people who want to play the game, not who want to win by any means necessary.

I guess this is the crux of the OP. What's stopping you?

Do you only play tournaments? Or you don't have people to play with? You can still play IG AC, just use the old rules.

However this is still true: "40k has a crappy, unbalanced rule set!"

The last game I played for sure... it's actually been a long while since I've failed to enjoy a game.

That said my winning record is currently atrocious, but even in those lost games I had a blast and did well.

I started playing more and more fantasy and more and more of the 40k games I were playing were against the same BA list with 6 razorbacks, each packing a 5 man assault squad with a melta and a powerfist then Mephiston on top.
Getting smashed every game no matter what pushed me more towards fantasy and the more fantasy I played the more glaring the issues with 40k became.

I enjoy pretty much every 40k game I play. I try to gets couple games in every week.

That said, I tend to be vocal about the things I don't like and forums like this are a perfect way to vent.

Haha!

Yeah I was grumbling earlier about only coming here to complain when I wanted to play 40k but had no to play with, so I'll bite on this one.

I had some fun playing 40k just last night as well, but what was really fun, despite the opponent, was the night before last!

Playing something awful like 3400 points on a 6x4 table, with three players.

We built a little fort thing in the middle of the table and put 5 objectives down, one primary on top of the fort and one in each corner of the table. Ended being a total slaughterfest...

I also had a lot of fun recently with the hobby aspect of 40k as well. I really didn't like my Chaos army, and had been reading a lot of the other codices when I figured, what the heck, lets just rebuild them all as the only other thing they can be! So I set about tearing apart my toys and now, finally I have a table ready army, no small thanks to a certain Dakka member!

So that was really awesome. Also, I've got some stuff on the way and some other new stuff to paint, so... more fun on the way!

Gets along better with animals... Go figure.
