Subject: Most ridiculous wins/fails you've had in 40k (in game)

This thread is meant to be a compilation of ridiculous happenings that you or someone you know have had during a game. Essentially just awesome stories of fluke, fails and straight up awesome.
Ie.
Win: I had a squad of 10 chaos cultists ( with mark of nurgle) charge a platoon command squad that was taking cover in a ruin. They managed to make it into combat without taking casualties from overwatch and the cultist champion challenged the officer, officer couldn't refuse and the cultist champ killed him, rolled dark apotheosis and became a daemon prince of nurgle. From 10pt value to over 100pt value.
Fail: I've only been doing friendly games so far and it turns out we've been doing blast markers wrong so they've been hella nerved in our games. We resolved each weapon within a squad individually rather than simultaneously so if the squad took casualties from the first blast, the second blast would be less effective…
What are your win/fail stories?

The biggest failure of a win I've had was with Imperial Armoured Battle Group vs. Tyranids.
Two vanquishers with beast hunter shells were on my side (of course other stuff too: 1500 pts.) and I was facing about 6-7 MCs and 40 Gaunts.
I killed every single one of his models, without taking a single loss. Not even a guardsman died. It was, I believe, the most boring and unbalanced match I've ever played...

Win: a squad of 10 Cultists with Autoguns and a Heavy Stubber shooting a duo of TH/SS Deathwing Terminators to death with a single volley.
Loss: my ballsy Terminator Chaos Lord and his retinue of Chaos Terminators dying to a bunch of Hormagaunts.

Not sure if it is a win or loss, but my super-expensive melee Khorne Chosen, led by Kharn, were assaulted by a C'tan shard who proceeded to wreck face... Until we remembered that he did not roll for charging through difficult terrain!
We agreed to rewind time, rolled, and found that the Shard actually did not reach them. The Chosen then went on to butcher the rest of his army.
After the game, we were looking in his Codex, when we saw that the Shard ignores the effects of difficult terrain... I am still not sure of who actually won that game.

Another Win/fail, my friend and I used to think the amount of grenades thrown in melee was how many attacks you had, making grenades extremely OP. In one game multi assaulted 6 IG tanks with 9 wyches w/haywire grenades, making 29 attacks and destroying 2 tanks, destroying the weapons of the rest. In another the game we had scout sergeants throwing 3 melta bombs each and wrecking land raiders. Then we realized that its only 1 grenade per guy no matter what...

Win: There was a game me and a friend of mine had. I used my Space Marine infantry vs. his IG tanks. Because tactical marines don't usually come with a lot of anti-tank firepower, we agreed if a Space Marine model was to assault a tank, it would work like using a melta bomb on it. My friend then proceeded to pound my infantry with his tanks. At one point, my Captain was on a narrow road with a Leman Russ on the other side. The Captain then spent three turns running up to the tank, getting shot at. He then spent another three turns assaulting the tank while all this time, being shot at by the Leman Russ' main cannon and Heavy Bolters. Eventually the captain then managed to destroy the tank after a few very close shots from the Leman Russ (and then proceeded to get shot down by another).
Fail: In my first game, I was playing against Orks. I actually forgot to shoot. This lead to everything I thought would be powerful dying due to Rokkit Launchas while my infantry was torn to bits by Big Shootas. It didn't help that he tried to get his Powa Klaw armed Warboss to have a duel with my Power Sword armed captain (back in 5th where my captain's Power Sword would ignore his 6+ armor save) and I decided to do the same. I was tabled pretty quickly.

This was a fail: Played against IG, 1850 vs my space marines. I had a big nasty group: 5 Hammernators in a LRR blocking LOS for my SE Librarian with tooled out Vanguard Veterans. He steals the indicative, demolishes my LRR with his LR Demolisher killing one terminator and 2 VVs, Weakens my VVs resolve with 10 man Psyker Battle Squad. He one shots my Chapter master with the hull lascannon, and my VVs ran off the board (LD 1 with a failed morale). Literally over 3/4ths of my army, gone on turn 1!

Growlin' Guntrukk Driver with Killacannon
|
I wasn't playing but saw this happen at a tourney earlier last year.
Eldar vs Draigowing. 750 points, so model count was fairly low on the Knights' side. Eldar goes first and deploys (it was a highly mobile army if a little low on scoring units - Bikes, war walkers and a Serpent loaded -probably- with Dire Avengers), Knights player deploys defensively, in a thin line, hugging terrain but dangerously close to the table edge. GKs fail to grab initiative. Game starts.
Turn one, Eldar advance and open fire on Draigo and his paladins, somehow forcing a morale check.
Now, what can go wrong?. Draigo is Ld10, right?
Double six.
But wait. Keep calm. This is nothing ATSKNF cannot fix.
ATSKNF grants auto-rallying, but units fall back as normal.
Damn.
Rolls for fallback distance. Double six (again). The entire units leaves the table. Eldar victory. Game ends.

Best win: all that was left on the field was a fire warrior and a chaos terminator lord. Terminator lord just got done rick rolling my ripe tide and he was 4" away from my fire warrior. Rapid fire 2 hits 2wounds he failed both saves. Now that fire warrior got remodeled to cadre fire blade.
Best lose/fail: was my tau vs IG, that day I learned 9 leman Russ first turn can remove and cause so many moral fails its not funny.

Squad of 5 dark eldar warriors is assaulted by a chaos lord in terminator armour carrying a black mace.
Chaos lord wiffs all his attacks. DE warriors land all of theirs. Chaos Lord fails every single one of his 2+ armour saves.
-------
Farsight and 3 crisis suits deep strike next to a 5 man squad of de warriors. Farsight et al cause 1 wound from shooting. In my phase all of the warrior shots cause a wound. Farsight and the suits go poof.

Sort of a similar story to Agent_Tremolo. Was playing chaos against a tau opponent. Have Chosen embarked in a Land Raider, and a couple squads of cultists hiding behind them. Everything else of mine is in reserve. Tau opponent seizes the initiative. First shot of the game from his hammerhead penetrates the Land Raider, gets an Explodes result on the pen table. The embarked squad of Chosen lose two dudes in the explosion, both squads of cultists are hit by the explosion and they lose a few models. All three squads fail their leadership test, and promptly run off the board. Since I have no models on the board, I immediately lose... on the very first shot of the game.

I went to my first tournament recently and tried my experimental Orks + Space Wolves list and went up against a Crimson Fists list.
Best Moment: Drop Pod Grey Hunters with 2 Rune Priests come down and Jaws a Thunderfire Cannon for first blood. My opponent then turns a Land Raider Crusader on them, unleashing 5 Assault Terminators and a Chaplain on them. 1 Rune Priest pops 1 Terminator with his pistol on overwatch, then kills 2 in CC before dying.
Second Best Moment: My Loota squad, cut down to 1 Ork (he needs to remove the entire squad for a bonus VP for removing all of my Elites), fires at his Stormtalon, which is right by the Land Raider Crusader, reloaded with 3 Terminators and coming at my Boyz. I remark that I have nothing left to damage the Land Raider, and he jokes that blowing up his Stormtalon could do it. My Loota snap fires at the Stormtalon, 3 shots, 2 hits, 1 pen. He then fails to jink and I roll a 6 to penetrate! Where does the flyer crash and burn? Right on top of his Land Raider! What happens? It's immobilized and his Terminators are forced to walk for an extra turn!
Third Best Moment: That same lonely Loota is approached by 5 Scouts that had outflanked to ambush the squad. He, having gone to ground, snap fires at them. 3 shots, 2 hits again, and 2 Scouts fall dead! The squad then has to fall back and gets caught by some Ork Boyz that won't move.
The Worst Moment: Bottom of the last turn, I have 2 20 man blobs of Shoota Boyz, one about 6 inches away and the other about 3 inches away from the 3 Terminators that got out of their stuck ride. Both squads shoot, 1 Terminator dies. My first squad, with a Powerklaw, only 3 inches away goes to Assault them, I roll double 1's. My next squad needs to roll a 6, I get a 5... Not being able to slay his Warlord dropped me from a draw to a minor loss.

Biggest Loss: I rolled double ones for my Deathshroud Terminator's armor save on the last turn of the game, dropping the relic and losing me the game. My biggest fail. My Space marines ( old codex) versus Eldar, shortly after the ned Dex hit. . Turn one. I loose 3 of 5 bikes, 2 of 5 scouts, the cannon of my TFC crew, 2 of 3 hp of my razorback, and my LRC blows up killing 2 tac marines that were hiding behind it. Nothing failed leadership or the game would have been over even faster. My turn 1. I shoot my quad gun at a serpent...fail to even hit..stupid Telion, everything else either hunkers down or moves up under cover. My razorback tries to move up to behind cover...fails a terrain check and gets stuck. My podding Sternguard drop in, scatter in a helpful manner ( one of few good things) fire 6 combi meltas at a serpent...complete whiff. His turn 2. He proceeds to wipe all but 2 Sternguard and my techmarine of the board. which he assualts. and they get stuck in combat. My turn...still stuck, and my other drop pod doesnt come in...10 more tac marines sitting around witht heir thumbs up thier collective rears. Turn 3...I am tabled.
Biggest win: TFC scatters from intended target of a squad of 20 shoota boys to over a immobilized Rhino of mine. Blows up the rhino. in the explosion I do wounds to the Boyz AND the Nob squad that broke the Rhino. Wounded 8 Boyz and dealt 6 wounds to the Nobs. Nearest target for the Nobs? His Warboss. Look out sir solls? fail...Warboss saves? fail... slay the warlord was the winning point!

My biggest fail: I played Tau in 3rd and 4th, back when all railguns were S10 AP1, and I've shot countless vehicles with them, including several Land Raiders.
I've never killed a Land Raider with one. Ever. Leman Russes on the front armor? Monoliths? sure. But never a Land Raider. Not even the time where I had 3 Broadsides pumping shots into an immobilized Land Raider for 5 turns.
Biggest fail against me (I can't count it as a win). I was playing Salamanders vs Chaos (both 5th ed codices at the time), and my TH/SS Terminators were in melee with a large unit of Plague Marines with a Nurgle Bike Lord leading them.
I challenged on my Terminator Sergeant, knowing that the Lord was likely going to go through my unit like a hot knife through butter.
I slowly plink away wounds while he either wiffs or my Storm Shield blocks his attacks. The last round of the challenge, he winds up his attacks and fails with the demon weapon, killing himself.
Unfortunately, the rest of my Terminators were being slowly dragged down by the Plague Marines (even with MC Thunder Hammers, they couldn't hit the broadside of a barn), and I ended up losing the unit and eventually the game.

Nasty Nob
|
Win; Nob from a trukk boy squad is sole survivor after LR Reedemer fire. My turn I move/assault the LR. I roll two hits and then one pen which becomes an explodes result.
In the following turn my opponent chooses to advance in the opposite direction with his second LR Reedemer. This being because he needs to survive until turn 5 to win on kill points. So he rolls a 1 on the dangerous terrain roll and becomes immobilized.
My turn came and I had my lone nob, mad dok grotsnik, and another nob charge the immobilized redeemer. The lone nob rolled another vehicle explosion the other unit didn't even need to roll.
He blew up two LR Reedemers all by himself. It's like a 2.2% occurence. I gotta promote the git somehow. Maybe give him a bigger stick and use him as a warbosslite in small games.

Sinister Chaos Marine
|
One of my earliest games with CSM against Dark Eldar. I played with pretty much every model I owned, and it was quite a bad army. My opponent, on the other hand, was reasonably wellrounded.
The game went on with him in a fairly tight blob, shooting my charging horde to tiny bits. By turn 4, all I had to assault with was a nurgle sorcerer and 2 plague marines. I charged the only thing I could reach: a full unit of grotesques led by some character. I challenged with the sorcerer, and I got down to my last wound, but managed to kill the bugger. Both plague marines died too, but the sorcerer was rewarded with daemonhood.
And then the fun started. In his turn, he failed his roll to control the grotesque and they exploded at maximum radius. All of his raiders and venom exploded in the blast, and in the ensuing chain reaction, he lost every single model he had, leaving only my Daemon prince to look around with a confused look on his face.

Boosting Space Marine Biker
|
Playing a game against Eldar with White Scars. Turn before Shooty terminators drop take their shots into unit of fire dragons and do decently. The same time a squad of 4 scouts works their way closer to the eldar lines. Eldar turn sees a fresh squad of dire avengers prace up with warlord seer. The eldar army proceeds to unload on the terminators, reducing them to a single model assault cannon toting termi. My turn, scouts move closer to wounded squad of fire dragons. The lone termi makes his leadership and decides to go down with a fight. He then fires into the dire avengers scoring a couple wounds. scouts fire at fire dragons killing one from the sergeants pp. Both units charge. Termy makes it through overwatch and proceeds to smack down a few dire avengers. Dire avengers and warlord completely whiff. Dire avengers then fail leadership and cower off the board. Next, the scouts fight the fire dragons. Sergeant challenges out the attached warlord. warlord wiffs and sergeant lands home a couple wounds with his pf to wipe out the other hq. other scouts hold their own and only drop a couple but keep things tied. Termy consolidates over to help scouts. And soon that side of the table is cleared.

I already posted my most ridiculous win in an earlier thread: ThePlaguedWarsmith wrote:This is a story I still have fun telling even almost a year of having it. I was learning the ropes with another beginner. Bare minimum FoC to make it easier; 1 HQ, 2 Troops and one of choosing from fast attack/elites/heavy support. DA vs CSM - had all of my beginner battles with this fellow, was a lot of fun. I had a ML3 MoT sorc, he had an ML2 librarian. First of all, my bare squad of bikes charged his deathwing squad and were locked in a stalemate for the rest of the game after my champion knocked his for six in a challenge. THEN, literally every time we set off a psychic power on either side, we managed to roll and successfully deny the witch. The icing on the cake though, was when a whittled down squad of CSM that numbered less than 8 without their champion (made my leadership by a hair's length) charged his Librarian; IIRC I got about 16 attacks. He rolled for armour saves.... and every die landed on a two. The chances of this happening were so infinitesimally small that it was for all intents and purposes impossible. His eyes went wide and me and a friend started pissing ourselves laughing. My CSM pistol-whipped the Librarian to oblivion and got me Slay the Warlord. I won on killpoints which was lovely.
My most ridiculous loss... being forced to challenge a Swarmlord with a termi-lord, whiffing all attacks and invuln saves, and losing spectacularly. The game was lost from then on.

One of my most amazing victories was recently, my Orks vs Blood Angels. To be fair my mates dice rolling was appaulling, But in a 2500pt game I only lost a single unit of Ork Boyz and had the Blood Angels tabled by Turn 5;
- a regular Nob taking out Tycho in a challenge was amazing,
- then my Meganoz took out a unit of 6 Terminators with Thunderhammers and Stormshields, losing only one of my own models.
- Sanguinor & his unit were held up for 3 turns by Boyz before Ghazghkull joined in & finished him off.
Biggest loss would be losing to Imperial Guard when fielding a full Green Tide of 180 Ork Boyz.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.
