Quite new to 40k and want to start an imperial guard army but is it worth spending 100-150 pounds only to see a new codex and model range out a few months later. I have seen a few rumours of march releases when I googled it. If anyone has any info please comment . Thank you

I've heard the rumors as well. I would save it and wait/see what new stuff/codex/any deals come out.
Maybe get a cople average joes to test out color schemes if you havnt already decided.

I agree with Evil Inc here, I too am wanting to start IG however with the rumors of them getting a new dex in march I am taking a wait and see attitude. If it's good and ends up being fun to use I probably will get it, if not guess I can always start work on my fire hawks army, with some LotD mixed in.

If you like the Cadian/Catachan ranges it is a safe bet they are not going to redesign the entire basic lines. Models will likely be repackaged, but not redone. There are always rumors of new plastic lines, but they have been around for a decade.

If you like the plastic models, now would be a good time to get them before the eventual price increase.

Well, some things are safe bets if you are certain you want to play IG. You are going to need a whole bunch of guys with lasguns, so you might as well buy some now.
Chimeras are unlikely to become useless, don't have a lot of options anyway and are easy enough to give switchable weapons, so you could make some of them. Officers and sergeants will probably continue to be best without any expensive upgrades, so feel free to do a few with chainswords and laspistols.

There was that one rumour (covered in salt) that said Catachans are no longer going to be produced, and that the IG (soon to be Astra Millitarium instead) have standard issued out the cadian pattern uniform to all soldiers except the most extreme forces (Ala DKoK, Tallarn etc.), though doesn't mean all of their model lines will be supported.

To sum it up, I would wait, as you never know what will happen until it does. Infantry platoons/Leman Russ' etc. could become useless for example, meaning you could save money not buying them

I say buy a box of basic troops and just paint em up, to get a feel for things. Your paints and basic troops will always be useful. As IG you'll at least have a couple squads of troops around, so buying one box just to have something to do while you wait and to polish up your abilities is a decent investment. I wouldn't go buy a battleforce or anything yet, though.

Its still rumours...means you can be waiting till april...july...september... guess what. Even with changes, IG will be still about human soldiers, so you wont make mistake with buying and painting them. Chimeras? Yeah, still viable, Inquisition got fresh codex and they are there. And IG has nice models, I bought sentinel just to model and paint him, its not lost time

Thanks all I think I will buy a set of troops for while I wait maybe even something from forgeworld if I see something I really like.

Start buying and painting your army without buying the book. You have time and when the book will be out, you can write your army,

This. Could probably buy some basic infantry though, they'll always be useful as SOMETHING.

So is there no word on why the name change out of the blue? Also would it be risky to buy tanks? Hasn't IG always been a tank force of some kind?

I dont see the tanks changing much. Course, look at the tyranid swarm and the eldar ghost force deals. It might be that they might do something like that for the guard where you could save some $ by waiting.

Well, I'm going to be so bold as to say that you can't go wrong with chimeras and Leman Russ tanks whatever you do. Depending on what flavour you want your guys to be - Cadias, Catachans, DKoK, Steel Legion (got some rumours about these guys being supplemented big in the next half-year but yeah, rumors...) Valhalans, Elysians or whatnot, you may also get basic guardsmen or heavy weapon teams (I doubt that they'll remove heavy bolters, lascans or really any other option here). You might want to wait with some Forgeworld specific stuff if you want the base IG, but if you're going to play a FW list, there's no point in waiting for GW anyways.

Is there any chance that Steel legion might get a supple codex of their on some how? I love steel legion

Went out today and bought a chimera and 6 guard cadians and paints and a brush for 30 pounds should keep me going for a while looking up some paint options
