Amanda Knox was found guilty of murder today by an Italian court, the latest twist in a murder case that goes back to 2007.

The verdict reached by the two judges and six jurors came after several hours of deliberations at the Florence courthouse.

The judge sentenced Knox to 28 years in prison. Her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito and co-defendant was sentenced to 25 years.

Two Italian judges and six jurors began deliberations earlier today. If Knox and her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito are found guilty, the court is also expected to pronounce a prison sentence. The prosecutor has asked for a 26 prison term for the murder for Knox and Sollecito, plus another four years for Knox on a related libel conviction.

This is the fourth time Knox faced a verdict on the 2007 murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher while they were roommates in Perugia, Italy. Knox, now 26, and Sollecito, 29, were convicted in 2009. After serving four years in prison they were freed in 2011 when an appeals court threw out the murder conviction. But Italy's supreme court ordered another appeals court to rehear the case.

Kercher's sister Stephanie and brother Lyle were in the courtroom for the verdict.

Knox, who is sporting a new, short haircut, remained in her hometown of Seattle for the latest trial. Sollecito was in court today earlier today, but was not present for the verdict.

On the day the deliberations began, an Italian journalist who is writing a book about the murder wrote that Knox has given him a letter addressed to the Kercher family to be given to the Kerchers if they are willing to accept it.

Roberto Costantini wrote in Corriere della Sera today that he spoke with Meredith Kercher's sister Stephanie several days ago about the letter.

He quoted Stephanie Kercher replying to the offer of the letter, "I will have to think. I don’t know, but today I don’t want to read it because I do not feel the need to speak with her now.”

Not really sure its a twist, but I've never credited Yahoo! with good writing.

Weird case of the case where everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong (for both sides). I don't think the prosecution or the defense even knows what's going on anymore they're just throwing out arguments and hoping they work XD

This whole case has been an enormous train wreck for both sides. I'm studying law and I couldn't even tell you all the things that went wrong on both sides; prosecution and defense (although Italy having a different legal system than the US doesn't help me any). At this point, they should just bring back trial by combat and call it a day. At least then it would be settled, one way or the other.

With double jeopardy will the US recognize this latest guilty verdict?

I think it was them apparently doing something like that which caused the mess in the first place

The US didn't recognize the first verdict.

Yup... and I doubt she'd ever set foot in Italy again.

She probably shouldn't travel to any other countries that has extradition agreement with Italy though (ie, other EU nations?).

Eh. Give it twenty years. She'll think they've forgotten, go somewhere and find herself surrounded by guys in fancy suits asking her what they can do on this, the day of their beautiful daughter's wedding

The US said they won't extradite, so the Italian courts (remember, same justice system that found seismologists guilty for not predicting earthquakes), put one through to appease the people.

For Knox's sake, I hope she never puts herself in a situation to have this bite her again.

Yeah... so if you ever find yourself on the wrong side of the law in Italy... you be fethed.

Knox got extremely lucky she got free on that second trial.

But that doesn't give details about anyone's new haircuts, so how am I supposed to figure out who's guilty?

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Italy is still taken seriously? Really, even after Berlusconi?

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Italy reminds me of a rapper.

Wait, wait, hear me out...

Ok, so all of Europe is in a rap battle, right? And its the 15th century. Don't ask why, just go with it. And Italy shows up and nobody can figure out why. Italy doesn't have the best rhymes, like France. It doesn't have Germany's street cred. It doesn't have England's tough guy image. Italy hasn't done anything big on the scene since Rome. So nobody takes it seriously. And then, just as things are getting heated with the Balkans and the Turks, Italy busts out "The Motherfething Renaissance, B*tches"... Then it drops the mic and walks off stage.

Afterwards, every other rapper had to give props to Italy, because literally all other rap that came after was influenced by "The Motherfething Renaissance, B*tches". For centuries, the starting point of everything was that song.

But after a while, people started to notice that Italy didn't show up to the anthropomorphised nation-state rap battles anymore. He was kind of coasting on the awesomeness of that song. The rumor was he went into rehab. Then he fell off the wagon. Then back into rehab, which led to the minor hit "Ode to My Homie Garibaldi". But then he got involved in that huge parking-lot brawl after that show in 1914 and he seemed to develop PTSD. Then there was the time that Germany showed up with his new "hard core gangsta" image, and Italy tried to ride on his coat tails. We all know how that ended. It was pretty sad, really. And every once in a while, Italy tries to make some new material work, but it never pans out. Now all he does is bust rhymes about a cartoonishly corrupt politician and an equally cartoonish legal system, and he just comes across as a Weird Al style novelty act that everybody stopped listening to decades ago.

This analogy has kind of gotten away from me. I don't really have a good way to end it, so I'll just click "submit" and hope for the best.

She probably should never go anywhere in the UK, either. Not even on a cruise. I always had the sense that the media in the UK were hardcore for a guilty verdict and wanted Knox put away for the rest of her life. Totally opposite view of the situation than we have here in the USA.

Media in the UK haven't really cared since the original trial AFAIK. Most coverage of the whole debacle has just boiled down to passing mentions of "Oh, and _____ happened; now to Tom for the weather".

I do not believe that it is an established fact the US will not extradite her, and would like to see a citation for that. Not calling anyone a liar, merely saying I'd like to read that article.

It seems to me that it's an very unlikely - but not impossible - outcome.
