-UPDATE- 14-04-2015

The game has been released on Steam and GoG. for €19,99/$19.99. Furthermore, you can now buy the complete package (as in Age of Wonders III, plus both DLC's) for a great discounted price!

Be advised that the free patch 1.5 is available for all Age of Wonders III owners wether they have any expansions or not! The patch adds PBEM and Vassalage, among many other upgrades (more information, and patch notes (prepare yourself for long time reading!), can be found here; http://ageofwonders.com/age-of-wonders-iii-free-update-v1-5-is-live/ .

For new players, Triumph has posted a handy Beginner's Guide. You can check it out here; http://ageofwonders.com/beginners-strategy-guide/

-UPDATE- 09-04-2015

The Tombles Tapes;

Frostlings Necromancer;

Tigran Sorcerer and new victory condition;

-UPDATE- 11-03-2015

The official announcement has been made;

The second, and this time more massive expansion, is going to be released the 14th of April 2015! for Windows, Mac and Linux platforms. Although the name was already leaked, now we have an offical confirmation of the name; "Eternal Lords"

Price of expansion is $ 19.99 / € 19,99 or local equivalent. Released on GoG and Steam.

Here is a little preview movie (prepare to be amazed);

Here is a preview of the features;

http://ageofwonders.com/eternallords/

For even more info, visit the official site;

http://ageofwonders.com/

-UPDATE- 14-02-2015

The Beta of the Mac/Linux version is coming in a couple of weeks. The final version of these two OS's will launch when the expansion releases the 31st of March.

More info can be read here; http://ageofwonders.com/upcoming-beta-maclinux-update/

Furtrhermore the new Dev Journal shows some nice new structures of Frostling and Necromancer origin. Check it out here; http://ageofwonders.com/dev-journal-structures-of-frost-and-darkness/

Much goodness is upon us!

-UPDATE- 07-02-2015

Not only the Frostlings will get a whole new race, it was announced that an old favourite, the Tigrans, will also be added in the coming expansion as a bonus race! The Dev journal can be found here; http://ageofwonders.com/dev-journal-the-tigrans-part-i/ . But for the blocked-at-work people; Here is a teaser of this bonus race;

-UPDATE- 30-01-2015

First things first; In the meantime there has been an expansion released after the last post in this thread. It is called Golden Realms and is available on Steam and GoG.

The Halflings have been added (full race with racial units, new heroes and leaders and more Halfling goodness), they even added a brand new campaign.

More info can be found here; http://ageofwonders.com/age-of-wonders-iii-golden-realms-expansion/ (including video)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now the reason for necromancing this thread; A new expansion is going to be released this coming March (as suspected while release is Q1 of this year).

This massive expansion will feature yet another new race (Frostlings) as well as a new, highly coveted, class; The Necromancer.

Here is a preview for the Frostling Necromancer;

There are weekly Dev diaries posted on the official site ( http://ageofwonders.com/category/news/ ) and accompanying this expansion will be a massive free update, including the highly anticipated PBEM (Play By E-Mail) mode! Oldskool Multiplayer, for people who have private lives interfering with (mostly) lengthy Multiplayer sessions!

Coming soon to Steam, as well as GoG (for the DRM free people). The pre-orders are not up yet, but you can buy the game and 1st expansion (Golden Realms) in advance (if you haven't got it yet) so that you are ready when the Necromancer is released upon the Age of Wonders World!

(Old Thread)

Main game details;

The really cool thing is that there are no good or evil races. If you want Goblin Paladins, you can! You can go all Goody-Two-Shoes with every race, or all baddy with them. This is an original way of playing methinks.
Here are some trailers;

And some general info on the game;

on the forum. Obviously

Sounds interesting. I like how they are doing away with the good / evil mechanic from the earlier games. I never liked that sort of dualism.

There are only a few races but the Devs promised to release more in DLC.

And whatever interest I had for this game has already taken a hit.

If they're free DLC then it's fine, but if it's a case of paying to access the stuff already coded into the game...

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

What do the races even do anyway? Information about this game is scarce, but your spells units and everything seem to be based on your class and not your race.

Like I said information is sparse and I can't figure out if I want this game or not. The rouge trailer looks neat though. http://ageofwonders.com/classes/rogue/ The idea of sending ambassador courtesans to other empires interest me. I like it when these games have diplomatic units to go along with diplomacy. Like how sins of a soar empire had ambassador ships you could use to improve relations with someone well at the same time buffing them.

Which game nowadays has free DLC? In the old days game companies released full games, nowadays it's more profitable to release a game and then add DLC later. First see how well it sells, then expand it. Knowing the previous Age of Wonders installments, I am pretty sure you can pre-order it while at least in this game the Devs actually post in the forum and answer player's questions which some companies (read: 2K) do not.

It is not known yet what the races do other than cosmetic. In AoW:Shadow Magic they had some racial-perks so maybe they add that.

Info is scarce, although, as said above your quote, the Devs actively post on the forums and there are many questions already asked.

@CthuluIsSpy; I totally agree with you and they even have the hairy women in the guise of Dwarven Succubi!

Its fairly common actually, although they are usually called patches (which add content).

The races in earlier AoW games were really quite similar in that they usualy had a roster that had units which adhered to a certain template (cheap spear armed infantry, cheap missile unit, medium infantry etc etc) so, assuming that this game handles races in a similar way, racial DLC isn't something that I will be getting excited about.

Patches almost never add content, only contain bugfixes I feel. Take Tomb Raider for example; loads of DLC, stupid things like MP weapon packs- all at a cost. Splinter Cell, DLC which costs money, XCOm; Elite Soldier Pack (a few cosmetic hats)- 5 euros, and I can go on.

I miss the old days when you bought a game and you had a full game. But unfortunately game companies need to make more money, and some big companies are milking every last penny from the players. Triumph will hopefully not milk every penny out of this game, they even sell copies of Shadow Magic I think especially because the community at Heavengames keeps the game alive.

For consolised AAA games then yes DLC is rarely free. For the rest of the gaming market however free DLC is fairly common.

Triumph are a rather small company so ofcourse I hope they don't charge anything for DLC, yet, I think that is wishful thinking.I don't mind paying for DLC, especially for small companies, while it suppports them more than the big bully-companies like UbiSoft.

I'm currently looking forwards to this game alot since i own all the previous game in the series so it should be fun to see how it all turns out in the end.

Hopefully they wont make it so when the game comes to steam they ad all kinda of extra stuff to it that you won't get when you buy the physical copy, which seems to start being the case with various games of Steam vs their physical copy.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his need

So that's all of the playable races from AoW2 in the game in some fashion, right? I mean, they aren't all playable, but there's something from each one in 3 now. Except for the Shadow Magic guys, who I'm guessing won't be added.

Aye, there are some more races from AoW 1 though so you never know what will come in the future. Shadow Realm and Syron races could even be added, when they make an expansion which lets the Archons come back from the Shadow Realm. But this coming expansion is filled with content; It's almost a whole new game!

It's very strongly present but you apply it through choice rather than through race, though Necromancers are evil and if you choose destruction or creation magic you start either evil or good. So you can have holy goblins and evil elves, and for the most part your faction alignment is entirely due to in game choices. Do you commit massacres or show mercy, do you backstab neighbours. There are minor bonuses and penalties for killing aligned but independent mooks so its evil to kill unicorns but good to kill vampiric spiders.

I'm very happy with how they've rebalanced the alignment gains. It was way, way too easy to become pure good before. Now there's more reason to try for a balance, too.

Haven't had much chance to try out the Tigrans yet, but I'm mostly happy with the frostlings. The two early ranged units only get one shot, but the fact that they can immobilize enemies makes a big difference.

I have never been able to become pure good. Guess I am just too fond of ethnic cleansing
I really love the Frostling faction.
Let's hope they are going to make more classes and races.

I have been able to. I am just really careful though. And funnily enough I always play Draconian and combining it with the dreadnought class and I have some of the best infantry in the game.

From whom are unforgiven we bring the mercy of war.

Heh, maybe I'm too attached to having hugely varied empires. I like having everyone on my side!

That said, I just played a game as an evil Tigran theocrat, bent on driving out everyone who was not down with evil Tigran theocrats, and it was pretty dang fun.
