Hi all
a rule question
yestrday i played with a friend of mine who was using Farsight supplement for tau

he had an unit of riptide: one riptide with 2x shield drone (MC) and he addedd his commander (IC) and riptide special characther (also an IC)
he told me he can add an IC to a riptide because rule says "IC can't join a unit formed by a single model"; however, 'cause riptide are formed by 3 models (riptide and shield drone) he can add IC

is this correct, rule-wise?
can you point me a faq or page on rulebook about that?

adding a support commander to a riptide is fairly overkill and 2x riptide on that is just... winning! :(

It is in the IC rules section regarding what units an IC can join.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

You cannot join ICs to model that can never consist of more than one model. A riptide unit can have one to three models, so an IC can join

The problem here is not about the commander joining a riptide but that the commander already was joined to a special character and then joined the riptide.

This cannot happen.

If he is already joined by somthing, he cannot join another unit without first leaving the one he is already joined too.

But in this example he wasn't.
The commander joined the Riptide, the SC Riptide then joined the Riptide.

Two IC's joined to a unit.

As everyone else pointed out, you can join an IC to a riptide.

You don't need the drones to do it however. The rule doesn't say that the unit has to have more than 1 model for an IC to join it, it says that the unit must not ALWAYS consist of one model.

The fact that the riptide CAN take drones is all that the rule requires.

Even better is "the eight" don't take up force org slots. so farsight + the eight + riptide + 10 kroot can be an allied detachment. Now join two farseers and get forewarning and fortune. Stupidity ensues. Thanks 6th edition.

The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Doesn't it take Farsight to be the warlord to unlock them? That'd prevent that trick.

Bob,
Correct.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

And you have to take a 3 strong Crisis team as well.

Eldarain,
Remind me to check the wording of the supplement again, as it is very likely that Crisis suits become troops only for the primary detachment. That is the normal format found throughout other 6th edition codex's when it comes to models which change the force organization slot of other units: That it only works for your primary detachment and not for allied detachments. If the Supplement is worded different then the allied detachment could just take the suits as troop choices but if not then your post is very correct as well.

In that case, the Riptide could never be taken in a Far-sight Allied detachment because the elite slot will have to be a three man suit team.

That was my first thought as well as it's been a consistent phrasing so far in 6th.

"In a Farsight Enclaves army, all XV8 Crisis Teams are troops choices instead of elites choices. However, when choosing a Farsight Enclaves army, you must include at least one XV8 Crisis Team consisting of three models (not including drones)"

Farsight unlocks them but they do not take up a slot, and yes you'd have to take 3 crisis. fething nit picks jesus.

Folks. Sit down and look at the two books and the rulebook. As stated it is legal to do as described. It is a part of what is called the O'Vesastar. It first got a lot of attention after NOVA 2013, months ago. It is quite legal.

That was in response to the Farsight ally ovesa star idea, which doesn't work if Farsight has to be your warlord... Nitpicking for pointing out something might not work? ....
