if you go first they haven't shot their shields off meaning that all of those pens are going to default to glances on a 2+. I doubt you have enough lances to reliably glance enough wave serpents to death. With the amount of TL S6/7 shooting they can put out DE vehicles start the game as paper and end quickly as confetti

Serpent shields have two modes:
A) defensive mode which changes all penetrating hits into glances on a 2+
B) Offensive mode which fires D6+1 S7 shots that ignore cover out to 60". AP -, but who cares?
So most DE are hosed against them whether they go first or last. You can't glance out AV 12 with ROF 1 ST 8 dark lances fast enough to save yourself.

A BS4 Lance weapon has a 29.5% chance to glance and a 3.5% chance to pen a Wave Serpent (due to serpent shield). This assumes there is NO cover; which there will be.
A Wave Serpent with Scatter Laser and Serpent Shield will do about 2.8 glances/pens assuming that the DE Vehicle has a flickerfield.
That means it takes 3x darklight weapons to have a reasonable chance of killing a serpend w/out a 5+ save. Whereas a serpent will easily do it when the DE vehicle HAS a 5++....
That's why

The shields can be used either offensively or defensively. Offensively: The shield can be activated as a shooting attack with D6+1 shots at S7, 60" range, ignores cover (it is also most likely TL) Defensively: As long as the Wave Serpent did not use the shield in it's shooting phase any penetrating hits are reduced to glances on a 2+. The shooting attack is TL from the new scatterlaser rules. As long as he gets one hit with a scatterlaser, then the rest of the shooting on that model is TL. And the scatterlasers on wave serpents start TL. Assuming a Serpent glances away all your pens and has no cover save, it takes 12 shots from your lances to kill one serpent. (DE are BS3 right? 9 shots if they are BS4) If you didn't kill it, it answers with 4 S6 TL shots and on averge 4 or 5 S7 TL ignores cover shots. That's gonna take down a DE vehicle. EDIT for Maths!

You wanna do the math to see how many lances it tanks to down a Serpent with holofields and an up shield? You need 3 pens/glances, with a 4+ cover meaning 6 pens/glances, at AV 12 meaning 12 hits. Do you have TWELVE lances per Serpent to take them out reliably before they utterly obliterate a unit a turn? Wanna see the maths for them? Without shield they have 4 TL scatter shots, 4 hits, 2 pens/glances. That's a Venom down if you don't get lucky on the 5++'s. With shield? Say and extra 4 TL strength 7 ignore cover shots causing an extra 2/3 glances/pens and that is one dead raider/ravage.
To me it seems like you are failing to see a problem that you haven't yet faced and/or know very little about, of course you don't see the problem. But I swear if you played against them you would know the problem. Add that to the effect double Scatter/Star Warwalkers do (about 5 strength 6 HITS each) or worse yet, Warp Spiders (A unit of 5 pulls out 10 strength 7 shots, 7ish hit, about 4/5 pens/glances, try 5++ that away) Dark Eldar simply don't stand a chance against a well rounded Mechdar list with out astounding luck, Eldar allies of their own or being a massively better player. Them's the breaks.

Yes, and it is a legitimate use of the word to "r" can means to slow down.
I suggest you re-edit your comment, as the Mods aren't keen on people circumventing the language filter.

Also bear in mind that even before the new Eldar codex, the Eldar army was probably one of the worst match-ups for Dark Eldar anyway because it mitigated their speed advantages and Dark Eldar found it difficult to break through multiple AV12 vehicles.
This edition has merely accentuated what was already there.

The main difference is never use the r-word as a noun. It CAN be used as a verb correctly but given the PERCIEVED negative connotation, it should just be avoided when possible.
The Serpent Shield needs LOS like any weapon. Make sure you set up terrain appropriately. Or just take the dude that allows DS of your whole army and get the drop on the opp.
Or take a foot Wrack army that has T4 FNP and bore your opp. into submission. Works for Orks.

Wave Serpent can move 12" and still fire scatter laser and shield at full BS. Terrain won't save you. In fact, it might block YOUR lanes of fire to the Serpents.

It is a very tough matchup for DE. If the DE player can kill 1 of the standard 4 waveserpents before the CWE player gets to shoot him and stay outside of the warp spiders turn 1 shooting range then a game can be made of it. I can usually tell how the matchup will go at the end of turn 1 with whether the DE player killed a serpent or not.

Yes, though most of the time the underslung cannon or catapults will be out of range. Serpents like to stay between 24-36" away.
