I think you should be able to break up the squad and move them all as different units then put them together.

So, my 50 man guardsman squad all become 1 man units?

That's called "Kill Team". Sort of, without the whole getting put back together thing.

1st, you then completely ignore coherency, so blast and template weapons become a thing of the past.

2nd, every special weapon / dude / anything more expensive than a basic trooper that you have becomes a target that can be targeted specifically.

3rd, precision attacks become worthless.

4th.... have you ever played 40k before? Just a wee bit of trolling, but for real, that would undo so many of the core rules that it would become unworkable outside of one or two units per side. You'd have trouble keeping track of whom had acted, for one thing!

I could see Combat Squads getting incorporated into more units for small games but honestly it wouldn't add a lot to most armies; Guard have so many people it'd be unmanageable and other than Guard squads Space Marine Tactical Squads are really the only unit that benefits from being able to split up into a manoeuvre and a fire element. What's the hole you're trying to patch here?

I like this, OP should have clarified a little more about it maybe written something up like this.

"I think you should be able to break up the squad and move them all as different units then put them together. To help represent how a tactical squad would split up into a few small groups to take care of multiple objectives in a local combat zone.

It would have to be structured as an ability for Tactical squads, or maybe just Infantry choices and only allowed for units with 10+ Troops

Allowing them to break up into a group of no less than 5, This prevents the 50 man blob into 50 individual units of one but are now 10 units of 5 (Blob armies arent as deadly in small groups as MEQ armies are. This keeps things a tiny amount of balanced on the table, still forcing the entire unit to follow 2/3 moral checks.

This allows a blob to move a bunch of small troop pockets onto objectives but they are so squishy shooting 5 guys off isnt going to be as bad as 50 or 25 one man units.

Bad idea is bad. Allowing giant units to split up into many small units gives a huge shift to horde armies, and makes for some pretty broken strategies.
Any unit with heavy firepower or close combat ability now has to kill all their enemies off 5 at a time, regardless of weapon strength. (What's that? You caused 40 wounds? Whelp, there go *my* five guys.) This just gets worse if you split them up more.
Overwatch becomes pointless. I'm not a fan of overwatch, but it would be easy to split off a couple guys from a big squad, charge to take the Overwatch hits, and then have eberyone else charge.
Also, just... Why?

I get how it would work, I'm simply questioning the necessity. In almost every game I'd want two units of five Dire Avengers in I'd just take two units of five Dire Avengers, I wouldn't take ten and then split them up into two independently-operating units with a set of weird rules. It's a rules patch to fix a problem that's not actually a problem.

I think your suggestion needs some fleshing out. Do you mean that every model should be able to opperate individually? If so I think it would be completely unworkable, games would take far too long, there would rarely ever be a reason to keep squads together.

Maybe only units of exactly 10 could split up.
But keep it for games of combat patrol or 500 points or less

It was just an idea I had because of irritation at not being able to handle all my enimies units as I could not fire at all of them.
